MovieTickets.com has launched its own weekly online video to help moviegoers make their weekend choices, tapping comedienne, singer and YouTube star Taryn Southern as host. Called “Movie Therapy,” the title is presumably a play off Southern’s popular YouTube series “Internet Therapy” — but instead of talking to the camera about everyday problems, the topic will be upcoming theatrical releases. There's a collective holding of breath right now amongst box office analysts and pundits everywhere as James Cameron's sprawling sci-fi flick "Avatar" trundles towards a record-breaking performance as the top-grossing movie of all time. There are still a few records to break on the domestic sales front for "Avatar" to hit #2, but there's really just one more mountain for the movie to climb to ensure it's place as the top-selling movie of all time.
"Titanic."
The attention the movie has attracted, that it continues to attract, means we've been watching the numbers very closely these past few weeks. Could it really surpass the $1.8 billion worldwide/$600 million domestic records held for more than a decade by Cameron's ill-fated love story? As we roll into weekend number five, the future is looking mighty bright for the blue Na'vi and their beautiful homeworld of Pandora.

As of this morning, Avatar accounts for 76% of tickets sold at MovieTickets.com this week to lead all films. There's over 200 sold out performances for the pic in the coming weeks. Of those sellouts, 168 are for 3D or IMAX 3D performances. “Avatar has already grossed $429 million domestically, leaving it $172 million short of eclipsing Titanic as the top grossing film of all-time,” said MovieTickets.com Executive Vice President Walt Borchers. “That's a steep climb, but with the volume of ticket buying we've seen on our site over the past month, there is a very good chance that it could, [...]...

Avatar has grossed $429 million domestically, which means that it only needs to gross $172 million to pass Titanic as the top-grossing film of all time. “That’s a steep climb,” states MovieTickets.com Executive Vice President Walt Borchers, “but with the volume of ticket buying we’ve seen on our site over the past month, there is a very good chance that it could, in fact, break Titanic‘s record.” A month after going into release, Avatar is still going strong. It accounts for 76 % of all tickets sold at MovieTickets.com, which reports over 200 sold-out performances in coming weeks. 168 are for 3D or IMAX 3D. Of course those premium ticket prices have inflated Avatar‘s numbers, so real comparisons with Titanic are difficult.
