Drummer Charlie Benante breaks down the Pantera classic “Walk” in a new video for Drumeo (watch below).
Benante, the longtime and still current drummer for Anthrax, joined Pantera in 2022 as part of the legendary metal act’s revamped reunion lineup. He’s had the difficult task of filling the shoes of the band’s late drummer, Vinnie Paul.

The veteran metal drummer begins his analysis of Vinnie Paul’s drum parts in “Walk” with the intro fill, which comes in after the first rounds of guitar riffs. The subtle complexities of the rhythm section become immediately apparent when Benante plays — for example — the opening fill slightly fast, showing that it doesn’t work.
“It sets up the groove a lot better, for me, if I don’t rush into it,” he said before playing it at the correct speed.

Jerry Abbott, the father of late Pantera members Dimebag Darrell and Vinnie Paul, has died at the age of 80.
The news of his passing was reported by his friend Danny Wood Sr., who wrote on social media, “I’m very sad to tell everyone of the passing of a close friend Jerry Abbott. He died last night in a Denton care giving facility. His Family is having a private Funeral for Family and close Friends with a Memorial Service being planned. Details soon.”
Jerry, who was a musician and recording engineer, was an instrumental figure throughout Pantera’s formative years. He managed the band and co-produced their albums during their pre-Cowboys From Hell days in the ’80s.
In 2014, 10 years after the death of Dimebag, Jerry released the autobiography Over My Shoulder: The Life and Times of Jerry Abbott, in which he detailed his relationship with his sons.

Pantera kicked off their 2024 North American tour with Lamb of God on Saturday (February 3rd) in Sunrise, Florida, and the set featured a welcome surprise for diehard fans.
The reunited metal legends — featuring classic members Philip Anselmo and Rex Brown alongside Zakk Wylde and Charlie Benante — performed a 14-song career-spanning set. The unexpected highlight came when Pantera revisited the dark, seven-minute masterpiece “Floods,” the first performance of the standout track from The Great Southern Trendkill since 2001. A fan favorite, “Floods” is one of the group’s more artful and doomier moments, warranting comparisons to one of Philip Anselmo’s other projects, Down.

Pantera’s Rex Brown has teamed with Epiphone for a new Thunderbird signature model bass guitar — the first Epiphone model in Brown’s partnership with Gibson Brands.
The Thunderbird is considered arguably the definitive rock bass of the ’70s and its classic silhouette features a clean Ebony finish on Rex’s model. The axe touts a 9-ply neck-through-body mahogany and walnut neck with a C-shape profile, mahogany body wings, and a standard 34-inch scale length.
“Sometimes, it’s not about the price, but the quality, and Epiphone has some of the coolest bass designs ever made, Imo,” commented Brown in a press release. “I’ve had Thunderbird’s as long as I can remember! There is nothing cooler looking than a TBird… All my favorite bass players growing up have played them!! From Tom Hamilton to Pete Way…”

Down — the metal supergroup featuring singer Philip Anselmo (Pantera) and guitarists Pepper Keenan (Corrosion of Conformity) and Kirk Windstein (Crowbar) — have begun working on their first new songs in nearly 10 years.
The veteran sludge act, which also includes drummer Jimmy Bowar (Eyehategod) and bassist Pat Bruders (ex-Goatwhore), has not released any new music since unveiling the EP Down IV – Part II in May 2014.
On Thursday (December 28th), Windstein shared a photo of himself and Keenan in the studio via Facebook (see below), with the caption, “So…we kinda wrote 2 Down songs today!!!”
Back in October, Windstein discussed what Down’s future would look like with Anselmo playing Pantera shows again. He told the Loaded Radio podcast (as transcribed by Blabbermouth), “Phil’s attitude is kind of just like, ‘Look, fellas, I’m doing what I’m doing [with Pantera]. I love it. Philip Anselmo has finally opened up about the Pantera reunion in one of his first interviews since the legendary metal band re-formed with guitarist Zakk Wylde and Anthrax drummer Charlie Benante.
Anselmo and bassist Rex Brown recently appeared on an episode of The Metallica Report podcast, and the singer made what would appear to be his first public comments on the Pantera reunion.
“It’s empowering,” Anselmo said of the reunion gigs [as transcribed by Blabbermouth]. “It is incredibly beautiful, and you feel so much love when you’re up there. And if you take it in, it’s a great feeling, man. These days, man, that’s where me and Rex, you know, we get to dig the shows more.”
He continued, “When we were younger, we were at war and when we were onstage; we were just angry and at war, man. Now it’s — the songs are there. I can concentrate on singing the fricking songs,...

Pantera were set to be one of the big draws for Aftershock festival this year, but fans will have to wait another year to see the legendary metal act perform at the four-day rock extravaganza in Sacramento, California. The band has dropped off the 2023 lineup, but has promised to play the 2024 edition of the fest.
In a statement on social media, Pantera cited “circumstances beyond our control” without offering any more details on the reason for the decision. However, they did give some good news in that they’ll still perform at promoter Danny Wimmer Presents’ Louder Than Life festival in Louisville, Kentucky, this weekend.
Pantera wrote, “Due to circumstances beyond our control, we will be unable to perform at this year’s edition of Aftershock next month. This event is monumental and it pains us to have to miss it. We will however be back for Aftershock 2024! A sincere...

Pantera have been inviting special guests to sing their classic song “Walk” with them during their current North American tour, and at this past Thursday’s show they were joined onstage by Lamb of God’s Randy Blythe and late guitarist Dimebag Darrell’s longtime girlfriend Rita Haney.
Video footage from the concert at Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion in The Woodlands, Texas, shows the revamped Pantera lineup first being joined by Blythe, with Haney quickly following. The two share the mic for the song’s iconic chorus, with frontman Philip Anselmo putting his arm around them.
Lamb of God are supporting Pantera on the North American tour, and Blythe is a longtime friend of the band, so it wasn’t a big surprise seeing him onstage.

Metallica kicked off the North American leg of their 2023-2024 “M72 World Tour” on Friday (August 4th) at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame band was joined on the bill by fellow metal legends Pantera and rising rockers Mammoth Wvh (led by Wolfgang Van Halen).
The tour (get tickets here) features Metallica performing two completely unique sets (no repeat songs) over two nights in each city, with different support acts each evening. They’ll be right back at MetLife on Sunday (August 6th), with Five Finger Death Punch and Ice Nine Kills opening.
The setup has the bands performing in the round, on a circular stage in the middle of the stadium, with some fans in the “Snakepit” (the center of the circle).
While there was a forecast for thunderstorms on Friday night, that never came to be, making for a comfortable summer evening in New Jersey.

What a night! I just got back from the Pantera and Lamb of God concert at the Freedom Mortage Pavilion in Camden, NJ, and I’m still buzzing from the adrenaline. It was one of the best shows I’ve ever seen, and I’ve seen a lot. The crowd was insane, the sound was loud, and the bands were on fire.
Legacy would be a fitting name for this tour, because let no one be mistaken, this is not a Pantera reunion tour by any means, but much more of a statement and tribute to the band’s unrelenting and dynamic legacy. It will never be called a reunion because there is no way that could ever be true, as we are sadly missing two of the band’s founding members, brothers Dimebag Darrell and Vinnie Paul Abbott…and they left some very big shoes to fill.

The revamped Pantera embarked on the band’s first North American headlining tour in 22 years on Friday, July 28th, in Burgettstown, Pennsylvania.
Notably, the encore consisted of the Far Beyond Driven cuts “Slaughtered” and “Revolution Is My Name,” the first time either song had been played live by Pantera since 2001.
The rest of the setlist included many of the Pantera staples and album cuts the group has been playing during its previous one-off festival performances and overseas dates.
“A New Level” from Vulgar Display of Power opened the set, and from there Philip Anselmo and company played classics such as “Mouth for War,” “I’m Broken, “5 Minutes Alone,” and their cover of Black Sabbath’s “Planet Caravan,” among others. Anselmo and the audience then broke into a chorus of “Happy Birthday” for bassist Rex Brown, who turned 59 the day before.

Pantera’s classic albums will be released on picture-disc vinyl for the first time as part of a 5-lp box set arriving July 21st via Rhino Records.
The collection, dubbed The Complete Studio Albums 1990-2000, includes Cowboys From Hell (1990), Vulgar Display of Power (1992), Far Beyond Driven (1994), The Great Southern Trendkill (1996), and Reinventing the Steel (2000). It’s limited to 3,500 copies sold through Rhino.com, Pantera.com, and indie retailers.
The five albums represent the band’s core discography, following a lesser-known run of four LPs in the ’80s that had more of a glam-metal vibe. The band reinvented itself with Cowboys From Hell, establishing the groove metal sound that made them one of the most revered metal acts in the world.

The 2023 edition of Welcome to Rockville took place over four days from Thursday (May 18th) to Sunday (May 21st) in Daytona Beach, Florida. The massive rock fest was led by headliners Tool, Pantera, Slipknot, and Avenged Sevenfold, while also featuring dozens more notable acts.
The festival closed out on Sunday with Tool’s first show of the year. The performance was particularly notable in that singer Maynard James Keenan dressed in drag just days after Governor Ron DeSantis signed a new anti-drag bill into law. As for the music, the band played a brief 10-song set that included classics like “Forty Six & 2” and “Stinkfist” alongside newer tracks like “Fear Inoculum” and “Invincible.”

Metallica will be embarking on their 2023-2024 world tour next month, and one of the bands supporting their North American legs is the recently reunited Pantera. While Pantera’s return has been met with some backlash, Metallica stickman Lars Ulrich thinks they have the right guy behind the drum kit.
Pantera are touring with classic members Philip Anselmo and Rex Brown along with guitarist Zakk Wylde and Anthrax drummer Charlie Benante. The latter two are filling in for late brothers Dimebag Darrell and Vinnie Paul, respectively. While the band has insisted that the reunion is a celebration of the legacies of Dime and Vinnie, some fans consider calling the band “Pantera” without the two brothers sacrilegious.

Metal supergroup Elegant Weapons have released their debut single. The band — comprised of Judas Priest guitarist Richie Faulkner, Rainbow singer Ronnie Romero, Uriah Heep bassist Dave Rimmer, and Accept drummer Christopher Williams — have unleashed the classic metal-sounding “Blind Leading the Blind.”
The track will appear on Elegant Weapons’ upcoming debut album, Horns for a Halo, out May 26th via Nuclear Blast.
When Elegant Weapons were first announced this past October, Pantera bassist Rex Brown and Judas Priest drummer Scott Travis were named as members of the band. While they are no longer part of the group’s permanent lineup, each has contributed to the forthcoming album.
The band is set to tour Europe in June, but Faulkner says more touring, and even a second album are in the works.
“As far as the future, we are all dedicated to giving this band the longest life we can,” stated the guitarist in a press release.

Heading into their seventh LP, and third for a major label, Pantera were bigger than ever. Their prior album, 1992’s Vulgar Display of Power, had gone gold, and expectations were high for what would come next. Some at their label felt it was the right time for the band to streamline the punishingly heavy sound they’d honed on Vulgar, as Metallica had done on their self-titled 1991 smash.

Pantera drummer and founding member Vinnie Paul died Friday night in Las Vegas. His passing was announced on the Pantera Facebook page, but no cause of death was revealed.
“Vincent Paul Abbott aka Vinnie Paul has passed away,” Pantera wrote on Facebook. “Paul is best known for his work as the drummer in the bands Pantera and Hellyeah. No further details are available at this time. The family requests you please respect their privacy during this time.”
The passing provoked an outcry among fans of the band, whose raw, groove heavy rock has been a mainstay of the hard music scene for more than 30 years.
