Showtime officially has picked up Cameron Crowe and J.J. Abrams’ pilot Roadies to series for a 2016 premiere. Winnie Holzman and Bryan Burke also executive produce the music-infused, one-hour ensemble comedy, described as a backstage look into the lives of a tight-knit group of rock band "roadies." Roadies, which switched to an hourlong format after originally being set up as half-hour, is produced by Bad Robot Productions, Vinyl Films and Dooley & Company Productions, in…...

Out on the rounds for Kill Me Three Times, Simon Pegg is, naturally enough, fielding a lot of questions about Star Trek 3. As revealed back in January, he's not only returning to the Enterprise as Montgomery "Scotty" Scott, but has also stepped up to the plate to co-write the next instalment with Doug Jung (Confidence). "It's terrifying!" he laughs."It was a difficult decision," Pegg told Collider. "I hemmed and hawed about it, a little bit, because it felt like a big responsibility. I owe J.J. Abrams and Bryan Burke an awful amount. I love those guys. I want to do right by them, so I felt like I should man up and do it. It’s weird to walk into something and take ownership of it, in a way. Everything else that I’ve written has been mine, from the very germ of the first idea, or shared...

After canceling the Apocalypse in “Pacific Rim,” Idris Elba looks to be joining another major sci-fi franchise, as he’s in negotiations to play the villain in “Star Trek 3,” an individual familiar with the project has told TheWrap. Justin Lin will direct Paramount’s sequel, which brings back Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg, Karl Urban and Anton Yelchin. J.J. Abrams will produce with his Bad Robot partner Bryan Burke and Skydance’s David Ellison. Production will start this summer after Elba wraps Harmony Korine’s “The Trap.” Also Read: Idris Elba, Robert Pattinson, James Franco, Al...

Forgive me. I am always quite late to feature films, since I refuse to pay $15 to watch 20 minutes worth of ads, and then (all too often) deal with annoying people during the film, often missing important dialogue. So I wait until most films are on cable before I see them.
It is for this reason that I saw Star Trek Into Darkness almost a year late. [N.B. If you have not yet seen Stid, this article is one huge spoiler.] And anyone who is familiar with Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan and Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (and the "Space Seed" episode of the original television series) will realize that Star Trek: Into Darkness hopelessly destroys the Star Trek timeline. [N.B. I actually avoided the new Star Trek franchise entirely because I am an original Trekker (not Trekkie!), and could not imagine “prequels” being any good. I ended up being charmed by the first film -- against my will.]
It is important to note here that during an interview when the first film of the new series came out, one or the other of director J.J. Abrams, writer-producer Alex Kurtzman and producer Bryan Burke stated that it was...

The first cast photo of the new Star Wars: Episode VII cast is here! One day after the cast of the latest film in the sci-fi franchise was announced, we're now getting a look at all castmembers in one room together. The black-and-white snapshot was taken during the first table read in London. In the center of the photo is director J.J. Abrams, who's talking to original Star Wars actor Harrison Ford. Other originals in the pic include Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels and Peter Mayhew. As for the newbies, John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis and Domhnall Gleeson are also included. Rounding out the group are producers Bryan Burke and Lawrence...

Maybe I’ve just been doing this for too long and I’ve become jaded by certain aspects of the television industry, but when I hear that NBC is having troubles with a series that has not even aired yet I roll my eyes. Believe comes from Gravity director Alfonso Cuaron and J.J. Abrams and has had a bit of a rocky history ahead of its midseason premiere. It hasn’t been anything too newsworthy, until now. We’ve gotten to the point that I’m likely just going to pass on Believe when it eventually premieres simply because the shenanigans going on behind the scenes don’t bode well for the series’ longevity.

Star Trek fans everywhere have been watching, sharing and re-watching The Challenge, a sly Audi ad that, as a comedy vehicle, comfortably seats a pair of mismatched Spocks: Leonard Nimoy, the television and sci-fi icon, and his on-screen heir, Zachary Quinto, who wears the ears in Star Trek Into Darkness.
They are trash-talking frenemies in the mini-movie, but Trek producer Bryan Burke says that in grand Spock tradition there’s a vast emotion hidden behind that frosty artifice.”Their relationship is not a working relationship at all,” Burke said. ”They’re family.”
As Hollywood relationships go, the bond between Nimoy and Quinto is an anomaly.

Last night J.J. Abrams and the cast of his USS Enterprise boldly went where quite a few people have gone before: to Leicester Square. But unlike all previous visitors, they did so for the premiere of Star Trek Into Darkness, which saw the square decked out in its sci-fi best for the occasion. Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Benedict Cumberbatch, Karl Urban, Alice Eve and Simon Pegg were all there for the occasion, with support from director J.J. Abrams, writers Damon Lindelof, Alex Kurtzman and Bob Orci and producer Bryan Burke. They were interviewed on a set resembling the brig of the Enterprise as they walked the carpet, before introducing the film to wild applause.Star Trek Into Darkness is out, of course, on May 9 here in the UK and on May 17 in the Us (apart from some Us IMAX screens, where it starts on May 15).If you have the iPad edition of Empire,...

TrekMovie got a hold of some big news yesterday regarding the Star Trek sequel. According to the website, a “kids friendly” teaser trailer (I’ve read reports that Raimi’s Oz is darker than the trailers suggest) will premiere today with Oz the Great and Powerful. After that, a new full-length trailer will be attached to G.I. Joe Retaliation, which comes out March 29, 2013.

It just wouldn’t be a very interesting pilot season if there weren’t at least two pilots from J.J. Abrams being picked up. Despite directing the upcoming Star Trek Into Darkness, Abrams has managed to prevent his prolific TV producing career from stalling. I don’t know where he finds the time; especially considering the recent announcement he’ll be directing the next episode of the Star Wars saga. However he does it, I’m glad for it. His shows, whether he’s directly involved in their creation or just producing, are always at least interesting concepts. Sure, some don’t always find an audience – I’m still bummed about Alcatraz – or don’t make it past the writing stage – does anyone remember that Terry O’Quinn/Michael Emerson buddy cop pilot, Odd Jobs? – but with the amount he has on the go, one of them is eventually going to land.

Pilot season continued in full force on Friday (Jan. 25), with several new dramas and comedies ordered by the networks. Among them are two pilots from J.J. Abrams ("Lost," "Fringe," "Star Trek," "Star Wars," etc.), a dystopian drama called "The Hundred," a show about an assassin family from John Wells, and a comedy starring James Caan.
Fox got the first of the J.J. Abrams pilots: an untitled project that is a buddy cop show set in the near future when Lapd officers are paired with human-like androids. J.H. Wyman ("Fringe") wrote and executive produced the pilot. Abrams and Bryan Burke will executive produce.
The second Abrams pilot, "Believe," has been ordered by NBC and was written/produced by Alfonso Cuaron ("Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban") and Mark Friedman, with Abrams and Burke again executive producing. You mention the name Alex Kurtzman around people who know movies and immediately the Transformers franchise and Star Trek come to mind. Alongside his writing and producing partner Bob Orci, Kurtzman has put pen to paper for some of the biggest films over the last six years which includes the first two Transformers films, Star Trek and Mission: Impossible III. Kurtzman's career in writing began with episodes of "Hercules: The Legendary Journeys" and "Alias" and his first work in feature films was on Michael Bay's The Island, but in 2012 it seems he's taking his career in a different direction. While Kurtzman and Orci are working on the screenplay for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and they worked with Damon Lindelof on the screenplay for the upcoming Star Trek sequel, the two lifelong friends have teamed to create their own production house, Kurtzman Orci Paper Products. One Tree Hill Boss and Abrams Join Forces
I’m starting to think J.J. Abrams will work with just about anybody now that he’s joined forces with One Tree Hill creator Mark Schwahn. The two teamed up to create and sell a project to the CW, which I was a little blown away by. Abrams is known for his crazy high concept series and unique takes on classic formulas. I just never pictured him doing a CW show. Not that I think that kind of gig is beneath him. I love the CW. If anything, this makes Abrams even more impressive. He is not at all picky about the stuff he involves himself in.
The proposed project, which has been given a script commitment, would revolve around a hotel in Maine, where we would follow the hotel’s staff and the many guests. Schwahn will write the script for the project,...

This should come as no surprise to anyone who is familiar with how the film and television industry works. When you find someone you like to work with you try and work with them as much as possible. That’s why, if you’re a fan of Lost, there are so many familiar names attached to Fox’s Alcatraz (J.J. Abrams, Bryan Burke, Elizabeth Sarnoff, and Jorge Garcia). One more Lost alumni is joining the series; Jack Bender. Bender has been hanging around on J.J. Abrams projects for over a decade. He’s directed three episodes of Felicity, 11 episodes of Alias, and a whopping 35 episodes of Lost. Bender is joining Alcatraz as an executive producer, alongside Abrams, Sarnoff, Burke, Steven Lilien and Bryan Wynbrandt, and he’ll also do some directing.
Bender is a fantastic director and I think he’s pretty underrated. He’s been nominated for an Emmy four times for directing,...
