She started out writing articles for magazines such as the Saturday Evening Post. She began writing children's books while her own children grew up. Her first book, "Clementine," was published in 1962 after being rejected by several publishers.
She planned to major in mathematics in college but, waylaid by calculus, earned a bachelor's degree in English from what is now Queens University of Charlotte.
