Who would have thought that one of the more enduring family movies in the last 20 years would come from Brett Ratner and star Nicolas Cage? Indeed, The Family Man was only a modest success when it came out over the holiday season in 2000, but it has since inspired rip-offs and remakes and is a beloved classic for many of us.
In it, Nicolas Cage plays a high-flying businessman named Jack Campbell, who doesn’t appreciate the little things in life, such as Christmas. It’s lonely at the top, but he consoles himself with his Ferrari, penthouse apartment in New York, and hook-ups with women such as supermodel Amber Valletta, who has a small role as his bedmate early in the film. Yet, being alone on Christmas Eve, he does a good deed when he intervenes in a convenience store standoff by showing empathy towards a wired, gun-toting customer, played by Don Cheadle,...

If you’re a dog lover, be sure to steer clear of The Pack. Why? Because you’ll either end up fearing your four-legged friends, or cringe during defensive scenes that depict appropriate, but brutal, man-on-canine violence. This isn’t your typical “when animals attack” adventure, thanks to the way director Nick Robertson is able to transform a few pups into dark, deranged reapers from Hell. Much like Adam MacDonald’s Backcountry, which features a hammer-clawed behemoth of a bear, scribe Evan Randall Green finds horror in the most primal situations, and tension never ceases. Robertson continually reminds us that Satan’s lapdogs are on the prowl, either watching from afar, or tearing into flesh with their bone-white teeth.
Did I just become a cat person?
This Australian thriller takes place on a sprawling plot of farmland, as the Wilson family are forced to defend their kingdom from a vicious pack of stray dogs.

The Santa Clause is 20 years old today—and while the series spawned a trilogy of family-friendly holiday films, we can't forget the franchise's dark origins. Tim Allen's Scott Calvin becomes Santa Claus by accidentally causing the original St. Nick to fall to his doom. Sure, the film pushes a "seeing is believing" message and includes plenty of warm and fuzzy holiday cheer—but it still starts off with the death of Santa Claus. The Santa Clause isn't the only movie to put a dark spin on the holiday season; there's a long and storied cinematic history of strange, bleak,...

Indie Spotlight Review: Nobody Can Cool
by Heather Wixson
Nobody Can Cool is the rather impressive directorial debut from up-and-coming filmmaking duo Dpyx, Marcy Boyle and Rachel Holzman, who crafted a blisteringly taut and thoughtful indie crime thriller with a palpable sense of tension from start to finish. A gritty and engaging tale of deceit, violence and desperation, Nobody Can Cool is anchored by a breakout performance by Nick Principe (best known from his work in the Laid to Rest series, Madison County and...

Last year I reviewed the majority of Jack Campbell’s Lost Fleet novels, a series of books that covered the long voyage home through enemy territory of a fleet of spaceships, led by a legendary hero. Although a little plodding and workmanlike at times, The Lost Fleet books were pretty enjoyable, boasted an impressive dedication to realism and had some very well-written space battles in them. Given the successful republishing of those books, Titan have now reissued an earlier set of Campbell’s titles – Jag in Space, which follow the exploits of a legal officer on a military spaceship, a sort of Grisham to Mars, if you will.
I read the first two in this series (of four), A Just Determination and Burden of Proof. Despite their rather portentous titles, the books are mostly fairly light in tone. Curiously, Campbell is credited as writing as John G Hemry (his actual...

The Lost Fleet – Beyond The Frontier: Dreadnaught
Written by Jack Campbell | Published by Titan Books | Format: Paperback, 448pp
Jack Campbell has returned to his military space saga with the far from concisely-titled The Lost Fleet – Beyond the Frontier: Dreadnaught. Picking up where the original Lost Fleet series left off, newlywed Admiral John ‘Black Jack’ Geary is charged with taking the fleet he saved out beyond the conquered Syndic worlds and into unexplored space, in order to learn more about the mysterious aliens who were inevitably discovered to be behind everything the first time around.
Fans of the Lost Fleet series should welcome the return of the fictional universe of Black Jack, however, the book is at first noticeably less impressive than its predecessors. This is attributable to a number of reasons, many of which are pretty reasonable. Firstly, as the first book in a new, continuing series, Campbell has taken...

Jack Campbell’s military science fiction series reaches its penultimate instalment in Relentless. The book opens with an account of Captain John Geary’s courageous and legend-making battle that started the galactic war the books describe over one hundred years ago, that has been referred to frequently throughout the previous four books, but never given a full description. Here, we get to read of the fraught battle and of Geary’s rescue from hibernation sleep a century later.
The book is much the same as its predecessors: politics, tactics, conspiracies and an unspoken romance bridge the gaps between large scale space battles. It’s perhaps unlikely to change anyone’s world, but fans of the series will be eager to catch another dose of Campbell’s moreish prose, before the grand conclusion in the final novel.
Relentless also features a ground battle, another first for the series, in which POWs are rescued,...

John G Hemry, also known as Jack Campbell, continues his interstellar saga in this fourth instalment of The Lost Fleet series. Having reviewed the first of the books earlier in the year and having interviewed the author, I was more than happy to catch up with ‘Black Jack’ Geary and his fleet as it attempts to return home through hostile enemy territory.
Having missed the second and third books, I was expecting to have more trouble catching up than I did. It is to Hemry’s credit that I was able to get up to speed with new events in the plot (Geary’s been sleeping with Rione?! Captain Whatshisface is in prison?!) with relative ease throughout the course of the book. Of course, it could also be said that the action is a little samey – the fleet arrives in a new system, salvages what it can and usually encounters the enemy,...

The Lost Fleet: Dauntless
Written by Jack Campbell | Distributed by Titan Books
The first novel in Jack Campbell’s Lost Fleet series begins strongly where other novels might end – in the aftermath of an enormous battle. The reader is thrown into the deep end and expected to catch up fairly quickly. We soon learn that Jack Geary, the series’ protagonist, has been rescued from a hundred year sleep in an escape pod by The Alliance space fleet. The fleet is waging war against the Syndic forces; the same war that Geary was involved in over a century before.
Having since become a figure of legend to the Alliance forces, Geary finds himself in control of the defeated fleet after the battle is lost and is faced with the impossible-seeming task of escaping the Syndic forces and returning to the safety of Alliance space, like an interstellar Kenny Dalglish appointed to save the Liverpool United Alliance.

Jack Campbell is the pseudonym for John G. Hemry, a retired Naval officer and graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis. As Jack Campbell, he writes The Lost Fleet series of military science fiction novels. He also wrote the Stark’s War and Paul Sinclair series under his real name.
Often compared to Battlestar Galactica and StarGate Universe, The Lost Fleet follows Captain John “Black Jack” Geary and the stranded Alliance fleet as they retreat home across the enemy star system. The first three books in the series – Dauntless, Fearless, and Courageous – have been released in paperback in the UK by Titan Books, who very kindly sent us a copy of Dauntless for review. So impressed were we by the book, that we tracked down author Jack Campbell for an interview.
1. Dauntless throws the reader right in at the deep end, starting with the aftermath of a pitched battle.
