Welcome to this week’s Lucha Underground review on Nerdly. I’m Nathan Favel and we should get right to the action!
Match #1: Big Bad Steve lost to Jake Strong
My Take: As matches go, this was not what you would call “ambitious”. The whole idea was to introduce Jake Strong, who is the former WWE World Heavyweight Champion Jack Swagger. Strong typically got the wrong end of the deal while working for Vince McMahon, with most of his momentum halted just as he was starting to gain some steam. Strong looks so different outside the WWE, despite having an identical look to his WWE days. It could be said that Strong’s training for Bellator has had an effect on his confidence (and that’s likely true) but I’d argue that it’s simply a thrill for any wrestler to go to work without having to run...

What was once a joke on Late Night TV 17 years ago, seems more like prophecy today. During a guest appearance on Late Night with Conan O'Brien back in 2000, Harrison Ford told Conan O'Brien that he would like to reprise his role as Indiana Jones, but at the time they did not have a script. Conan then joked that the Indy franchise is so popular that he would watch it even if Dr. Jones was 80. Little did he know just how close to predicting the future he was.
Ford did eventually reprise his again role as Dr. Jones in 2007's Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull which many thought would be his last time. But now Ford is currently gearing up to don the fedora and whip one more time in 2020. Which means Ford will be in his late seventies when Indiana Jones 5 opens in theaters on...

Balls Mahoney, a professional wrestler whose real name was Jonathan Rechner, died Tuesday. He was 44. His death was confirmed by Johnny Candido, the brother of the late Chris Candido, who simply said: “he died suddenly.” Mahoney was an original Ecw (Extreme Championship Wrestling) personality and wrestled in the company until it folded after being bought by the WWE. He has been wrestling independently since being released by the WWE in 2008. Also Read: WWE 'Monday Night Raw': 9 Things You Didn't See on TV He is best known for his appearances with Ecw during the late 1990s and early 2000s,...

We’re still waiting for Marvel Studios to at least acknowledge that Thor: Ragnarok will be directed by Taika Waititi, let alone that it will likely star two-time Academy Award-winner Cate Blanchett. However, the actress has been further pressed about her mystery role in the 2017 threequel. During an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Blanchett was asked flat-out if she’s in Ragnarok, to which she made the revelation that she’ll be taking over for fellow Aussie Chris Hemsworth as the God(dess) of Thunder. Obviously, she’s joking (or is she?), but watch below to see for yourself. Skip To 1:55 Mark We’re almost certain Cate Blanchett will be playing a supervillain in Thor: Ragnarok, especially given what her prospective co-star Mark Ruffalo said of her potential casting. And also the fact that Marvel typically casts big-name veteran actors as villains if not the lead superhero. However, there...

This Sunday is the first night of Chanukah, the Jewish festival of lights.
Sure, the anticipation for Christmas has been raging for weeks already, but for the all of the Jewish people around the world, we’ve only got a few more days to go. Chanukah may not be the most important of our holidays, but it’s hard to find one that’s more fun – for eight days we exchange presents, eat potato pancakes, and spin a top. All I’m saying is, I’m not jealous of your yuletide festivities.
With Chanukah frenzy at a high, I thought it would be fun to celebrate the holiday on WhatCulture, courtesy of your favorite form of entertainment and mine: professional wrestling.
Over the years, there have been several great Jewish grapplers, men and women who have represented all sorts of different fighting styles and brought many different styles and talents to the ring.

WWE superstar Neville has denied reports that previously linked him with adopting a Mighty Mouse type gimmick.
Speaking to the Podnasty Podcast, the “Man That Gravity Forgot” said;
“There’s no truth in [The Mighty Mouse rumors] actually. I guess I was just more surprised than anything. Sometimes you get the wildest things just pop up and that was one of those things that it was funny at the time I guess.”

In the run up to Neville getting a spot on the main roster, rumours persisted that WWE creative were keen for him to debut as a superhero type character who would dress up in essentially a Mighty Mouse costume. The idea was that since he’s a shorter wrestler that has an impressive physique but noticeable ears, he had strong resemblance to the Mighty Mouse character, which reports suggested WWE thought would get him over.

WWE continue with their volume releases of Ecw history with the third Ecw Unreleased release, hosted by Joey Styles, Stevie Richards and The Blue Meanie. I recall Ecw fondly in many ways, and it is fun to go back and look at some of the matches, wrestlers and storylines that made the grungy extreme promotion an underground (and eventually more than that) hit. With comments and introductions from the three hosts, this is a collection of matches and angles that will appeal, like the previous sets, to Ecw fans, and people looking to discover the history of hardcore.
There are some blinders in here, I have to say. But, with wrestlers like Dean Malenko, Eddie Guerrero, Cactus “Mick Foley” Jack, Lance Storm, Chris Jericho, Terry Funk and others, it’s easy to see why there is a high level of quality in some of the matches on offer. Ecw provided...

A lot of people have been talking about Benjamin Morris’ 538 piece, “Are Pro Wrestlers Dying at an Unusual Rate?”
Like Morris, I am neither an actuarial scientist nor a demographer. So, our interpretations of the data should be taken with a grain of salt. My results were somewhat different from Morris’ due to a difference data set and changes in how we calculated actuarial predictions.
Differences in methodology from Morris
I also used Social Security Actuarial Life Tables, but my “expected mortality rates” for the age groups were not the same as Morris’. For each wrestler, I calculated what their age would have been as of today. Then, based on gender, I looked up the number of lives (out of 100,000) that were expected to still be alive and converted that to a percentage. His analysis looked at wrestlers who were on 20+ WWF PPVs through 2002. I went with a...

Mark this down as the only time a Tony Award winner will appear on "WWE Raw," let alone actually hurt someone.
Hugh Jackman appeared on "WWE's Monday Night Raw" (Sept. 19) to promote "Real Steel," his upcoming robot boxing movie. As per usual, the actors/wrestlers hammed it up and played good vs. evil to the audience. Except in this case, wrestling wasn't entirely fake.
With the referee distracted (as per usual), Jackman wound up to deliver a "punch" to wrestler Dolph Ziggler's face. The punch landed a bit harder than anticipated and according to reports, Ziggler suffered a real-life broken jaw. The grappler took to his Twitter to report:
"...Mri scheduled for 1pm...#thanksBatman...hairline mandibular fracture...getting a special mouth guard tomorrow..."
This is, of course, the WWE so who knows if they are playing this up. But since we all know Jackman has an adamantium skeleton, we tend to believe it's real.
