Cyndi Lauper has released a re-recorded rendition of her 1993 abortion rights song “Sally’s Pigeons” following the Supreme Court’s repeal of Roe v. Wade.
Originally released nearly 30 years ago, “Sally’s Pigeons” told the story of Lauper’s childhood friend who, as a teenager, got pregnant and died following a back-alley abortion procedure.

Nanci Griffith wrote songs that the music world loved to cover. With news of her death on August 13th at the age of 68, many are revisiting her folk and country standards — or learning about her incredible singing and songwriting gifts for the first time. But throughout the 1980s and into the Nineties, she was a stalwart for many in the folk and evolving country music scene — what Steve Earle termed “the great credibility scare” when Nashville “opened its doors (and ears) to such left-of-center artists” as Griffith, Mary Chapin Carpenter,...

The 37th Grammy Awards, held in March 1995, were an especially influential ceremony thanks to Tony Bennett’s controversial Album of the Year win for “MTV Unplugged,” which led the academy to introduce their now-infamous and now-deceased nomination review committees to decide the ultimate contenders. But there was a more overlooked result that took place on the same night, and it was actually pretty rare: Sheryl Crow (“All I Wanna Do”) and Bruce Springsteen (“Streets of Philadelphia”) split the awards for Record of the Year and Song of the Year, respectively. That was actually the last time that two songs split those awards when both songs were nominated in both categories.
Prior to Crow/Springsteen, Record and Song of the Year had split like that only seven times:
1963: “I Left My Heart In San Francisco” by Tony Bennett (Record) and “What Kind of Fool Am I?” by Sammy Davis Jr....

Thirty years ago this month, Mary Chapin Carpenter released her 1990 album Shooting Straight in the Dark, a record that, up until “Shut Up and Kiss Me” in 1994, produced the Washington, D.C.-area songwriter’s highest charting single. The song was “Down at the Twist and Shout” and it helped introduce country-radio listeners to some authentically Cajun sounds thanks to a cameo by zydeco kings Beausoleil.
Carpenter wrote the irresistible dance song about her nights spent at an American Legion Hall in Bethesda, Maryland, where an eclectic array of bands would play every weekend.

Mary Chapin Carpenter has a snake problem. The Grammy-winning songwriter has been finding outgrown snakeskins around her home in Virginia and it’s freaking her out.

Dolly Parton‘s voice has been characterized as “indescribable.” That’s not true. Her voice is a Thomas’ English Muffin, filled with nooks and crannies which hold the melted butter and make each scrumptious bite a new taste experience. The other night, My Mary and I were looking for something to watch on the tube. She had recorded Fly Away Home, the 1996 film by Carroll Ballard, starring Jeff Daniels, Dana Delaney, Anna Pacquin and Terry Kinney. We’ve watched it many times and I think we even own a copy of it. It’s wonderfully acted and beautifully shot; if you ever watch it, try to see it in wide screen. Some of the shots of Canadian Geese flying are breathtaking.
One of the things that struck me (again) was Mark Isham’s soundtrack and the haunting song that opens and closes the film, 10,000 Miles, sung by Mary Chapin Carpenter. (You can find it on YouTube, along with the lyrics.) It was one of the pieces of music that I played over and over again during that year of grieving after my wife, Kim Yale, died. We have to give Taylor Swift some major props. During Wednesday (Nov. 6) night's 2013 Cma Awards, she performed a lovely acoustic version of her hit song "Red." It was pretty and quiet and super amazing. What made it super amazing?
Taylor had probably The Ultimate Country Music Backup Band ever. Ever. And to have the ability to have this kind of band backing her up at her age, and at this early place in her career in Nashville is pretty amazing. Where does she go from here? Seriously?
Alison Krauss - Lead singer of Alison Krauss and Union Station as well as her albums with rock superstar Robert Plant and half of the "O Brother Where Art Thou?" soundtrack.
Vince Gill - With over 40 charted country singles in 30 years of music-making, Vince Gill has earned 20 Grammy Awards, more than any other male country music artist. He's Vince Gill. Vince. Gill. And...

In a complete twist from the original, Amy must steal the Scarecrow’s brain, remove the Tin Woodman’s heart, and take the Lion’s courage. And ultimately — destroy Dorothy.” Seriously?
Abercrombie & Fitch presents “The Fox.” Maybe it’s just me, but none of them seem that into it.

Holly Williams, "The Highway" (Georgiana)
Holly Williams is the kind of poetic songwriter country music once embraced. These days, the powerfully sensitive songs featured on her new album, "The Highway," are relegated to the independent Americana genre that exists outside of the arena-rock formulas of country radio.
The strength of Williams' songwriting and the subtle emotions in her husky, expressive voice suggest she is following in the cross-genre paths of Mary Chapin Carpenter and Kathy Mattea – or the country side of Neil Young and Lyle Lovett.
Writing of struggles with family and faith, of living a transient life and of dealing with faithfulness and problematic men, Hank Williams' granddaughter uses personal experiences to explore universal issues. Amid a raw yet seamless blend of piano, acoustic guitar and subtle rhythms and sonic accents, her songs seek something true amid the bumps and bliss of daily life. She makes listeners feel why that search is important.

This week: Does country music have any gay anthems? Why the brouhaha over Elton John’s child? Plus, Mark Indelicato, Kyle Bornheimer, and more!
Have a question about gay male entertainment? Contact me here (and be sure and include your city and state and/or country!
Q: I've always wondered what's with the gay guy obsession with straight guys doing gay adult films? Is it like a forbidden fruit kind of obsession, or are straight guys just that much hotter, because I really don't get it? A hot guy is a hot guy and gay adult films are gay adult films, but looking at the internet, sites with straight guys getting it on with other guys are all the rage now. I personally find the whole "gay for pay" thing a bit weird. It might be me thinking a bit too much, but there's a slight turn off in knowing...

Having come out of the closet as a lesbian, Chely Wright says her public lifestyle has brought her daily hate mail and death threats.
Wright, who came out in People Magazine in May 2010 with an excerpt from her memoir, 'Like Me,' spoke to the lesbian culture/news/politics/entertainment site Autostraddle.com about her long road and difficult decision.
"If it appears from the outside in that it's helped my career, it could be because I haven't talked about the negative. You won't hear me bitching and moaning on my Facebook about the hate mail I've gotten," the 'Single White Female' singer said. "My life has been threatened. I get nasty letters every day, 'I'm through with you Chely Wright, you're going to hell.'"
Perhaps those messages don't shake her because Wright was close to killing herself over being closeted. Perhaps that's where she gets her power.

The Big Music Machine is spitting out new releases from music veterans looking for another taste of the big time. Melissa Etheridge yearns, Peter Frampton gets autobiographical, Mary Chapin Carpenter gets reflective, and Courtney Love is . . . well . . . Courtney Love. Plus, Georgia rapper B.o.B. reminds the old folks of the new school. Read on and pick the ones you want to play. Vote: Is Courtney Love a tragic talent or a shameless charlatan? Skip: Hole, "Nobody's Daughter" The story goes like this: Mrs. Kurt Cobain was sitting in rehab when her friend, producer/songwriter and former 4 Non Blonde Linda Perry gave her a guitar. Love wrote a bunch of tunes you'd expect from someone in rehab -- songs about anger, pain, regret, kicking addictions. Perry and Billy Corgan formed a musical support group for Love, and so was...

"We've got two lives, one we're given, the other one we make," Mary Chapin Carpenter sang on Come On Come On, her 1992 breakthrough album. For her, that estimate was too conservative --- three years ago, a pulmonary embolism nearly killed her. Seasons of doctors followed, and medicine and rest. Now she's released The Age of Miracles, and it's not overstatement to suggest that it's a rebirth --- a third life for her. Small complication: In each of her lives, there have been two Mary Chapin Carpenters, one a significant writer, one a singer who can deliver hits. Sometimes the brainiac Brown grad and the Nashville hit maker don't seem to meet. She writes from the intersection of emotion and reason; she can sing like she's fronting a bar band. It's those raucous, bawdy songs that get the most air...

It's a little surprising that until now, no one has put together the definitive tribute album to folk's fertile days in New York's Greenwich Village. 429 Records' new collection titled The Village--a Celebration Of The Music Of Greenwich Village spotlights the historical significance of the neighborhood's folk music scene with passionate contributions by thirteen artists including Rickie Lee Jones, Los Lobos, Bruce Hornsby, Amos Lee, Shelby Lynne, Cowboy Junkies, John Oates, Lucinda Williams, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Rachael Yamagata, and others. In her glowing liner notes, Suze Rotolo (featured on The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan album cover) accurately states, "The songs on The Village aren't confined to any particular era any more than the musicians performing them are...every tune is something transformed from something I knew into something I didn't." The music of Tim Buckley, Judy Collins, Joan Baez, Fred Neil, John...

Q: One of my friends has recently turned me on to country music (I am not sure whether to thank him yet or not). Are there any who are out, or who are known to have a positive relationship with the Lgbt community? -- Megan, Canton, Ohio
A: No out mainstream acts, but some country acts have been open, vocal supporters of us – most notably, Dolly Parton, The Dixie Chicks, Faith Hill and her husband Tim McGraw, and even Marie Osmond (who, as we all know, is both “a little bit country” and the mother of a lesbian). And, of course, most of the cool alt-country acts that I personally adore are on record as supporting us: Jimmy Dale Gilmore, Roseanne Cash, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Emmylou Harris, etc.
But can I just say?...

The top three executives at Sony Music Nashville have been let go, Sony Music said Friday. President and CEO Allen Butler, executive vp and general manager Mike Kraski and executive vp Blake Chancey left their posts as part of the Sony Music's broad worldwide restructuring that has affected about 1,000 staffers. Sources indicated that president of Nashville-based DMZ Records, John Grady, will replace Butler and MCA Nashville executive vp A&R Mark Wright will take Chancey's role. Kraski is not expected to be replaced. Anouncements regarding key appointments will be made in the immediate future," a Sony Music spokesman said in a statement Butler was upped to president of Sony Music Nashville in 1997 by former Sony Music chief Thomas Mottola. Butler was credited with establishing the careers of such acts as Mary Chapin Carpenter, Patty Loveless and Colin Raye.
