When John Farrar turned up to a movie set at dawn clutching a demo of his hastily written “emergency song”, he didn’t have high hopes. The call had only come in the previous day, crying out for a last-minute number to plug a hole in the musical score for when the greaser with heart gets the good girl turned bad. Farrar hadn’t exactly been inspired in scratching it together – “desperate is probably the word”, he says. The director took one listen and hated it, but the last-day-of-school shot was already set up and they were all out of options. A choreographer threw together a dance routine on the spot. The scene went in the can inside seven hours, and so wrapped this hokey teen musical presumably bound for oblivion.

As a prequel series hits our TV screens, the cast and crew of the hit film remember the auditions, the stage show and the ‘summer-long party’ of filming
Forty-five years ago, audiences first glimpsed the sun-kissed, palm-lined campus of Rydell High, the school setting for the movie musical Grease. Featuring star-making performances from John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John, Grease immersed viewers in the camp melodrama of 1950s adolescence, replete with preening boys, blushing girls and explosive dance numbers.
Based on the 1971 stage musical by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey, which had starred actors including Richard Gere and Barry Bostwick, Grease the film swapped the original’s grittier Chicago setting for the steamy heat of the west coast. Centring on the story of the car-obsessed T-Birds and their romances with the chain-smoking Pink Ladies, Grease was met with a mixed reception upon its release in 1978. “I’ve never seen an uglier large-scale musical,...

The original "Grease" stage musical first debuted at the Kingston Mines night club in Chicago in 1971. The book was by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey, who also wrote the music and lyrics with John Farrar. Set in the 1950s, "Grease" was a winking, somewhat bawdy anti-nostalgia piece about high school greasers and car nuts falling in love after a significant summer vacation. It banked on the images of squeaky-clean 1950s teeny-bopper movies, but inserted sexuality, a teen pregnancy, gang violence, and themes of class. The main characters were Danny the greaser and Sandy the square. They had a romantic fling in the summer, but may be too embarrassed to date one another during the school year. Their relationship is reconciled when Sandy adopts the clothes and mannerisms of the greasers. "Grease" moved to Broadway in 1972 and played all the way through 1980, making it the longest-running Broadway show at the time.

Paramount+ is hoping its latest series will be the one that you want. Like greased lightnin’ (go greased lightnin’), the “Grease” prequel series “Rise of the Pink Ladies” is racing to the streamer on April 6, in time for you to binge it over those summer nights eventually. Paramount+ announced the news from their January 9 presentation for the Television Critic’s Association Winter press tour and, because there are worse things they could do, released a short teaser for the teen musical series to accompany it.
The series is a prequel to “Grease,” the 1978 film itself adapted from the 1971 stage musical by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey. Directed by Randal Kleiser, the movie was led by John Travolta and the late Olivia Newton-John as star-crossed greaser Danny Zuko and good girl Sandy Olsson, but the film became a cultural sensation (raking in 366.2 million at the global box office) thanks in part to the memorable supporting cast,...

When I was in high school there was an unspoken rule that said you were either a superfan of The Cure or The Smiths, but not both. Looking back now, this is an invented rivalry, as both groups cover much of the same artistic ground and appeal to like-minded fans. I’ve been thinking about this theory a lot lately, because it really showcases the sort of things that feel of world-shattering importance when you are a teenager. And while I squandered much of my misspent youth dancing in my bedroom to both “Stop Me If You Think You’ve Heard This One Before” and “The Lovecats,” there was another, perhaps more consequential, pop culture face-off that caused division through the hallways of early-1990s schools everywhere: Grease or Grease 2?

The original high school musical, Grease, premiered for Paramount Pictures in the summer of 1978. Now more than 40 years later, the Grease spinoff will premiere for Paramount’s streaming descendent Paramount+.
According to Variety, the previously announced Grease spinoff, Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies, will be moving to Paramount+ from HBO Max. Paramount+ is the new streaming brand from ViacomCBS, which will be taking over for CBS All Access next year. HBO Max is the recently launched streaming concept from WarnerMedia. The news comes almost a year to the day after the spinoff was originally announced.
The move appears to be a natural fit as Paramount Television Studios is the studio behind the project to begin with. Per Variety, HBO Max decided to move on from the series after WarnerMedia Entertainment chairman Bob Greenblatt left the conglomerate and HBO Chief Content Officer Casey Bloys took over decision-making for HBO and HBO Max.

The “Grease” spinoff series is go, go, going somewhere else.
Paramount Plus, the recently announced ViacomCBS streaming platform, has nabbed the show from HBO Max and rebranded it as “Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies,” Variety has learned exclusively from sources. News of the move comes almost exactly a year to the day after the show, a spinoff of the classic John Travolta and Olivia Newton John movie from 1978, was handed a straight-to-series order by the WarnerMedia streamer.
For “Grease” fans screaming tell me more, tell me more, “Rise of the Pink Ladies” is an hour-long musical comedy about how the infamous Pink Ladies began and how the reverence, fear, and moral panic they sparked changed Rydell High forever. Annabel Oakes remains on board as creator, writer and executive producer.
To those asking did HBO Max put up a fight to keep the show and why its summer dreams were ripped at the seams,...

Paramount’s plan to tell you more, tell you more about the crucial amorous 1950s-set teen backstory to its iconic 1978 musical, Grease, appears to be coming to fruition. The project, a prequel movie titled Summer Lovin’, went into development last year and has just procured a director in Brett Haley.
Summer Lovin’ is officially moving forward with Haley in the director’s chair, reports Deadline. A surging indie talent for whom the film will serve as a potential mainstream breakthrough, Haley will work off a script by Leah McKendrick, a surging talent poised to break out in her own right. They will be joined here by producers in Temple Hill and Picturestart. Interestingly, the report points to studio enthusiasm strong enough for the project to serve as a potential franchise-launcher.

You probably remember the Grease fan theories we told you about a few days back. Well, we have some updates that may burst your bubble. Of course, if you thought these conspiracies were a little too dark for your tastes, you might be pleased to hear they are exactly that. You heard right. After all that Internet hoo-ha, the fan theories have been debunked by none other than Grease co-creator, Jim Jacobs. TMZ notes, when he wrote the book and musical with Warren Casey, they never intended for the story to be a "drowning woman's coma fantasy," like Reddit boldly suggested. Likewise, Sandy never drowned when she and Danny met on the beach, and it doesn't look like this was a dying Danny's...

Jim Jacobs, the man who co-wrote the musical Grease with Warren Casey 45 years ago, is today denying rumors that their play—and, by extension, its film adaptation—takes place in a character’s head as her brain is slowly robbed of oxygen moments just before her death, TMZ reports.
The remarkably well-founded theory was originally posited in an Imgur post three years ago—and popularized by actress Sarah Michelle Gellar in a recent Facebook post—which correctly pointed out that Sandy and Danny’s car flying off into the sky at the end of the movie defies the laws of physics. The post also notes that Danny (played by John Travolta in the 1978 film) brags to his friends that while vacationing at the beach he rescued Sandy (Olivia Newton-John) from a watery death, singing “I saved her life, she nearly drowned.”

Grease creator Jim Jacobs has debunked one of the more bizarre fan theories around his beloved creation: Namely, that Sandy(Olivia Newton John) went into a coma in the drowning accident alluded to in "Summer Nights" and the entire film is a fantasy that takes place in her mind. The theory, which dates to a three-year-old Reddit thread, was recently given a bump in visibility by Sarah Michelle Gellar, who posted a summary of it to her Facebook. Basically, it takes its cues from two moments in the film: The line Danny (John Travolta) sings about saving Sandy's life when...

That bizarre fan theory about “Grease” that says Sandy was in a coma the whole movie, and dies at the end? Today in 2007, the second Broadway revival of Grease opened at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre, where it ran for 554 performances. Grease is a 1971 musical by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey. The musical is named for the 1950s United States working-class youth subculture known as the greasers. The musical, set in 1959 at fictional Rydell High School loosely based on William Howard Taft School, follows ten working-class teenagers as they navigate the complexities of love, cars, and drive-ins.

A few days after the release of the first-look photos of Fox’s upcoming production Grease: Live, the network has treated audiences to a glimpse of the much hyped musical. In other words, the first promo is here and it looks exactly like we hoped for, and then some. Given what can only be worded as perfect casting, the abundance of talent (both on stage and behind-the-scenes as well), and fantastic art design, Grease: Live, which will air on Fox this January, is looking like it’s going to kick off 2016 in the best of ways. Moreover, the live broadcast, could be exactly what viewers need, considering how erratic the fall season has been. The original Grease (score and book by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey) follows the blossoming love among a group of teenagers during the soda shop culture of the 1950s. It premiered on Broadway in 1972 and has had two revivals.

NBC's "Peter Pan Live!" may not have been a smash, but Fox's previously announced "Grease: Live" is still moving forward with both a premiere date and pair of female leads. Fox announced on Saturday (January 17) that Julianne Hough and Vanessa Hudgens will take key roles in "Grease: Live," which will be based on both the original musical by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey, but also the 1978 feature adaptation. "Grease: Live" will air on Fox on Sunday, January 31, 2016. So yes, that's a long time for Hough, Hudgens and the yet-to-be-announced castmembers to get prepared. Blurbs executive producer Marc Platt, "'Grease' is one of the most treasured and favored pop culture phenomenons of our time. It's fun, it's endearing and we are so excited to reimagine this iconic story with a shared entertainment event suited for today's audience." Hough will play the lead role of Sandy, virginal new girl at Rydell High.

Olivia Newton-John and Didi Conn go together (like rama lamma lamma ka dinga da dinga dong), so it was an absolute pleasure to see the pair reunited at the weekend.
At Newton-John's Las Vegas show on Saturday night, Grease's Frenchy (Conn) and Sandy (Newton-John) got dressed in their best Pink Ladies leather for a rendition of 'Summer Nights'.
They were joined by backing singer Marlen Landin for the performance at The Flamingo.
Based on Warren Casey and Jim Jacobs's 1971 musical, Grease was adapted for the big screen in 1978 and became an instant success.
The film starred Newton-John as Australian Sandy, who had a summer fling with Danny Zuko (John Travolta), only for the pair to be reunited at Rydell High School the following semester.
Initially a preppy outcast, Sandy becomes friends with the Pink Ladies: Frenchy, Rizzo (Stockard Channing), Marty (Dinah Manoff) and Jan (Jamie Donnelly).

Fox has jumped into the live musical business with Grease Live, a three-hour production of the popular musical to air live next year. The project, which drew interest from multiple networks, comes from Paramount Television and marks the first official network green light for the recently relaunched TV division of the movie studio that was behind the blockbuster 1978 feature adaptation of Grease starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John. Live musicals have become a hot TV commodity following the huge success of NBC’s staging of The Sound Of Music. NBC will follow it up with a live production of Peter Pan this year. The 1971 Broadway musical was written by Warren Casey and Jim Jacobs, with its feature adaptation grossing nearly $400 million worldwide, making it the highest-grossing movie musical ever. Fox’s staging will feature a young ensemble cast, the Casey/Jacobs songs “Summer Nights,” “Greased Lightnin’” and “We Go Together...

That’s right, Grease is the word that you heard.
Fox is getting into the live musical game with a live three-hour version of the Broadway high-school classic. The network’s Grease Live special is billed as the first-ever live broadcast TV production of the 1971 musical from Warren Casey and Jim Jacobs, which also inspired the 1978 hit film starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John.
“From Broadway to film, and across generations, Grease is one of the most beloved musical stories ever told – and we can’t wait to bring it to our air in a spectacular live event,” said Shana C.

NBC is no longer the only player when it comes to live network TV productions of classic musicals. Fox announced on Monday (April 28) morning that the network is moving forward with "Grease Live," an entirely self-explanatory live production of "Grease," which will premiere in 2015. After "The Sound of Music Live!" premiered to a whopping 5.6 rating among adults 18-49 and 22 million viewers (in Live+7 figures) for NBC last December, "Grease" was considered a possible contender to be the network's second live musical. Instead, NBC went with "Peter Pan," which will air live on December 4, 2014 with a yet-to-be-announced cast. That left "Grease" for Fox and the network is mighty excited. “From Broadway to film, and across generations, ‘Grease’ is one of the most beloved musical stories ever told -- and we can't wait to bring it to our air in a spectacular live event," blurbs Shana C. Waterman, Senior Vice President of Event Series for Fox.

Grease Live Coming To Fox
“From Broadway to film, and across generations, Grease is one of the most beloved musical stories ever told – and we can’t wait to bring it to our air in a spectacular live event,” said Shana C. Waterman, senior VP of event series for Fox. “Its iconic characters and addictive songs make it the perfect fit for Fox, and we’re going to give it the kind of star power and production quality to make every Sandy, Danny, Rizzo and Kenickie out there want to get up and sing along.”
Grease, originally a musical written by Warren Casey and Jim Jacobs, first appeared on Broadway in 1971. The high school dramedy was reimagined for the small screen later on in the decade, starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John.

A mainstay of worst-sequels-ever-made lists, squirming alongside the likes of Batman & Robin, Speed 2 and Exorcist II: The Heretic, Grease 2 was roundly lambasted upon its 1982 release and its critical reputation has nose-dived ever since. Here's a film that cost $11.2m to make (£6.7m) - almost twice the budget of its much-loved, popular culture-bothering forerunner - and yet failed to secure the return of its two stars, John Travolta and Olivier Newton-John, or its composers, Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey.
It entered its 58-day shoot working from an unfinished script, with Didi Conn (reappearing as Frenchy, though she vanishes halfway through the movie) calling the production "rushed, frantic and unorganised". Its stars Michelle Pfeiffer and Maxwell Caulfield failed to get along, Pfeiffer later labelling her on-screen lover as "self-adoring". It turned away a young Tom Cruise for the role of T-Birds leader Johnny Nogerelli, instead plumping for the strikingly uncharismatic Adrian Zmed.

Musicals have been tap dancing their way into moviegoers' hearts since the invention of cinema sound itself. From Oliver! to Singin' in the Rain, here are the Guardian and Observer critics' picks of the 10 best

10. Oliver!
Historically, the British musical has been intertwined with British music, drawing on music hall in the 1940s and the pop charts in the 50s – low-budget films of provincial interest and nothing to trouble the bosses at MGM. In the late 60s, however, the genre enjoyed a brief, high-profile heyday, and between Tommy Steele in Half a Sixpence (1967) and Richard Attenborough's star-studded Oh! What A Lovely War (1969) came the biggest of them all: Oliver! (1968), Carol Reed's adaptation of Lionel Bart's 1960 stage hit and the recipient of six Academy awards.
