Dozens of sound designers, engineers and mixers have signed a petition protesting the Academy’s decision to award the sound Oscar during its pre-telecast hour on Sunday.
A source close to the sound branch also revealed that guild members are planning on wearing their guild badges upside down as a form of silent protest over the demotion of crafts at the Oscars.
Karol Urban, President of the Cinema Audio Society confirmed the protest might go one step further. In a statement, Urban said, “This weekend, the Oscars may be turned upside down as we may see winners from all categories accept their Oscars upside down in a silent show of solidarity with the eight affected categories. We are all filmmakers of equal importance.”
More than 80 people, including 16 Academy Award winners, signed the letter to the Academy, which is posted in full below.

A minor note on Sunday’s much-discussed, host-free, wonderfully diverse Oscar ceremony: It was awfully rough on collaborators.
Time and again, the stage was filled with winners who smiled, nodded and got barely a word in edgewise, as a colleague sopped up the limelight.
Maybe there was a designated speaker rule. But if so, not everyone honored it. The sound mixers for Bohemian Rhapsody — Paul Massey, Tim Cavagin and John Casali — did the old-style Three Musketeers thing, for instance, each taking a few seconds to thank family, friends and colleagues. The Green Book team similarly spread their time among three speakers.
But those were rare birds on a night when several winning teams had a member who turned out to be considerably more equal than the others, never mind those old saws about film being the most collaborative of arts.

For a second year in a row, a single film won both sound categories at the Oscars, with 20th Century Fox’s Bohemian Rhapsody scoring Sound Editing and Sound Mixing honors Sunday. Last year, Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk took honors in both craft categories.
The Queen biopic that stars Rami Malek as frontman Freddie Mercury featured several showstopping concert numbers — including the biopic’s grand finale reenactment of Queen’s 1985 Live Aid concert, one 22-minute take that happened to be the first scene shot for the film.
The pic won out Sunday against competition that included another music-filled pic, Warner Bros’ A Star Is Born, in mixing. Disney’s Black Panther, Netflix’s Roma and Universal’s First Man were also nominated in both categories.
John Warhurst and Nina Hartstone won Rhapsody‘s statuettes for Sound Editing, while Paul Massey, Tim Cavagin and John Casali won for Sound Mixing.

The 91st Annual Academy Awards are finally here, and who knows how they’re going to play out? Ironically like many of the films it’ll be honoring, the yearlong buildup and campaign for the event has been plagued by backstage controversies – with the hiring and prompt resignation of would-be Mc Kevin Hart to the debacles concerning its runtime, it looks like the host-less Oscars won’t be giving out jet skis for shortest acceptance speech this year.
With that in mind, the purpose of the Academy Awards is to celebrate 2018’s greatest movies; and following the trend of the show’s last several seasons, this year’s nominees are in themselves historic, not only for their diversity, but also for the genres and studios that they represent.

Last night, two important precursors for specific technical categories gave out their awards, helping to potentially inform how two Oscar fields may end up turning out. The pair of groups are the Cinema Audio Society, which ties into Best Sound Mixing at the Academy Awards, while the Makeup Artists and Hair Stylists Guild obviously ties into Best Makeup and Hairstyling at the Oscars. Did these results clear up any races? Well, they gave us some frontrunners, but I don’t think anything is locked up. Not with how this year has gone, at least. That being said, these were the expected outcomes yesterday, so take that into consideration as well. The Cinema Audio Society (or Cas) top prize went to Bohemian Rhapsody, taking the category of Live Action Motion Picture. The animated winner was Isle of Dogs, while the Documentary victor was Free Solo. This sets up Bohemian Rhapsody to...

“Bohemian Rhapsody” (live action), “Free Solo” (documentary), and Wes Anderson’s stop-motion “Isle of Dogs” (upsetting the animated “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse”) were the top sound-mixing winners at Saturday’s 55th annual Cas Awards (at the InterContinental Hotel).
In terms of the Oscar race, the popular Freddie Mercury biopic, starring Best Actor favorite Rami Malek, strengthened its frontrunning status. The emotional Live Aid concert footage, in particular, benefits from the thunderous IMAX presentation.

Fiona Crombie.
Yorgos Lanthimos’ The Favourite won seven prizes at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts’ awards in London on Sunday, including original screenplay for Tony McNamara and Deborah Davis and production design for Fiona Crombie and Alice Felton.
So the momentum builds for all four, who have been nominated in their respective categories at the Academy Awards.
Crombie’s work on The Favourite had already been recognised as it was named best period film at the Art Directors Guild’s Excellence in Production Design Awards in Los Angeles.
In the past five years, the winner of the Adg’s period film category went on to win the Oscar in production design three times: The Great Gatsby (2014), The Grand Budapest Hotel (2025) and The Shape of Water (2018), which also won best picture.

Moments ago, we saw one of the final dominos in the precursor season tumble. Yes, the 72nd British Academy Film Awards were held, with the winners staking their claim to potential Oscar glory. BAFTA has long held major sway with the Academy Awards, so what voters in the former do, members of the latter keep in mind. That should again be the case this year, though there weren’t a whole lot of surprises to be found. BAFTA voters embraced the things we expected them to, for better or worse. Now, it’s just a matter of figuring out if they’re on the money or not, which is what I’ll be doing next… BAFTA gave the most awards to The Favourite, with seven in total, including Olivia Colman in Best Actress, Rachel Weisz in Best Supporting Actress, and the duo of Deborah Davis and Tony McNamara in Best Original Screenplay.

The sound and music editor and re-recording mixer behind Bohemian Rhapsody, John Warhurst and Paul Massey came to the project with ample experience on music-based films, and still needed time to get their footing, figuring out how this particular one could work.
Telling the remarkable true story of Queen frontman Freddie Mercury, the drama follows the band’s rise from humble beginnings through their iconic performance at Live Aid in 1985. Given the nature of the story at hand, Warhurst and Massey knew the project would be demanding. Mercury’s voice was singular, seemingly impossible to match, and the film would need the right star to channel his charisma.
The pic would eventually find its lead in Rami Malek, who is making his first run at Oscar this year, though there were more fundamental quandaries to confront, in terms of the film’s approach to sound.“There were many discussions, because...

The 90th Academy Awards has concluded and I think a lot of movie geeks are happy with the way things played out! I couldn't be more excited to see Guillermo del Toro win Best Director and his film The Shape of Water win Best Picture of the year!
We also saw Gary Oldman win Best Actor, which he definitely deserved! Frances McDormand, took home the Best Actress Award and Sam Rockwell won for Best Supporting Actor for Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. Then there was Jordan Peele, who won Best Original Screenplay for Get Out, which so freakin' cool!
Personally, the one film that I didn't think should have won was Call Me By Your Name for Best Adapted Screenplay. Molly's Game, Logan, Mudbound, and The Disaster Artist were all better films with better scripts!
Below you'll find a full list of the nominees with the winners bolded. Are you happy with the winners?...

Will this be the year of Three Billboards? Or will del Toro’s enchanting fairy tale The Shape Of Water run riot through the winner’s list? It’s fairly likely that no one film will dominate the results as has happened in previous, duller years. The nominations for the 2018 Academy Awards are in and Guillermo del Toro's fantastic film, The Shape of Water, did pretty damn good as it leads the pack with thirteen of the nominations! Those include Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Original Screenplay and more. This was one of my favorite movies of the year, so it was great to see it get a lot of love.
Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk ended up with eight nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri received seven nominations, including Best Picture, Best Actress, and Best Supporting Actor. Jordan Peele's Get Out also landed a few nominations including Best Director, which was cool!
As expected, James Franco and his film The Disaster Artist got snubbed amid sexual misconduct allegations surrounding the actor.
