Hilton Valentine, original guitarist for the Animals who featured on songs like “The House of the Rising Sun,” died Friday at the age of 77.
Abkco Music, the band’s label, confirmed Valentine’s death Friday. “Our deepest sympathies go out to [Valentine]’s family and friends on his passing this morning, at the age of 77,” the label wrote. “A founding member and original guitarist of The Animals, Valentine was a pioneering guitar player influencing the sound of rock and roll for decades to come.” No cause of death was revealed.

“We’ve been doing new tracks that are really fantastic and we’ve just been getting into them,” Jimi Hendrix told Rolling Stone in February 1968, right after he and the Experience had played San Francisco’s Fillmore West. “You have these songs in your mind. You want to hurry up and get back to the things you were doing in the studio, because that’s the way you gear your mind….We wanted to play [the Fillmore], quite naturally, but you’re thinking about all these tracks, which is completely different from what you’re doing now.

John Constantine, done right, is one of DC Comics’ strongest characters. The current incarnation in the Rebirth universe is a pale comparison to his Vertigo roots and the NBC series didn’t push the horrific elements far enough. Matt Ryan’s wonderful interpretation has been further watered down for the CW’s Legends of Tomorrow, so hearing him in all his weary glory in Constantine: City of Demons is most welcome.
This is one of the best animated adaptations of a comic book character, thanks to letting it be an R-rated film ensuring the horror/supernatural elements were true to the source material and not just curse words tossed in for “authenticity”. Kudos to J.M. DeMatteis for bringing Alan Moore, Stephen Bissette, and John Totleben’s character to proper life. His original script loosely adapts Hellblazer: All His Engines graphic novel by Mike Carey and Leonardo Manco.

Half a century ago, when Jimi Hendrix began work on what would become his the final album to come out in his lifetime, Electric Ladyland, he was finding inspiration everywhere. “Jimi was very much in the realm of experimentation,” says one of the album’s recording engineers, Eddie Kramer. Kramer is seated in the control room of Electric Lady Studios, the New York studio Hendrix opened shortly before his death in 1970. “When I first started working with him, [Hendrix manager] Chas Chandler told me, ‘The rules are, “There are no rules.’ We...

Constantine has had his problems when it comes to bringing the character from the pages to the big screen. The character was brought to the big screen in a not-so-comic book accurate film in 2005 when he was portrayed by Keanu Reeves. He then had his own live-action series in 2014 which only lasted a season. Yet, fans still love him all the same. So much so that the character has been revived in comic book fashion and has appeared in the CW Arrow-verse throughout the past two years. Now the character is back in a dual-release of Constantine: City of Demons. Get all the details below.

Charles Halford's Chas Chandler receives some welcome character development in this week's episode of Constantine...
This review contains spoilers.
1.10 Quid Pro Quo
There’s a new hero in town, and his name is Chas Chandler. The mild-mannered cab driver has thus far been somewhat lacking in personality, but Quid Pro Quo rectifies that by giving Chas both a backstory and a chance to take charge.
I was mistaken last week when I said this wasn’t a Hellblazer story. It’s loosely based on the straight-to-graphic-novel book All His Engines (which I have not read, unfortunately). In the Constantine version of the story, dozens of people in Brooklyn are falling into mysterious comas, and one of the victims is Chas’ daughter Geraldine. Chas enlists Constantine’s help, against the wishes of his ex-wife Renee (who is a lot hotter and less irritating here than in the comics; on the flip side,...

Constantine, Season 1, Episode 10, “Quid Pro Quo”
Written by Brian Anthony
Directed by Mary Harron
Airs Fridays at 8pm (Et) on NBC
Throughout Constantine‘s first season, Chas Chandler (Charles Halford) has been an enigmatic and sadly underused figure. He plays the voice of reason and comfort to the amoral, twice or thrice damned Constantine (Matt Ryan) and has saved him many times with his special, unexplained powers. Using some carefully selected flashbacks joined to the main narrative with the recurring image of a flame, “Quid Pro Quo” reveals why Chas seemingly can’t die, why he is friends with a man who makes him pick up his bar tab 10 out of 10 times, and explores Chas’ strained relationship with his ex-wife Renee (Amanda Clayton) and daughter Geraldine. Writer Brian Anthony also introduces legendary DC Comics villain Felix Faust (played by a chilling Mark Margolis) a “second fiddle” magician who acts as...

While The Flash and Gotham, both DC Comics series have found great success on The CW and Fox, their fellow new DC show Constantine, which premiered late last month on NBC, has been struggling quite a bit. In fact, Constantine, which airs Friday nights at 10 p.m. on the Peacock, has been shedding viewers so quickly that the network has decided not pick up the show for another nine episodes, meaning that its first season will end after its thirteenth episode. Although not getting a back nine order certainly doesn’t bode well for the future of Constantine, that doesn’t meant that the show is cancelled just yet. It is possible that the series could return for a second season, especially if viewership increases in the remaining episodes of Season 1. Constantine stars Matt Ryan as the titular character, Charles Hardford as Chas Chandler, Harold Perrineau as Manny, and Angélica Celaya as Zed Martin.

If you work with John Constantine, there's a good chance you might not make it out of a job alive. That's a refrain John (Matt Ryan) has proven to be true for several weeks on NBC's Constantine, but death doesn't always have to mean the end of a friendship for John. His oldest pal, Chas Chandler (Charles Halford), has the uncanny ability to revive himself after a dance with death. Chas has to take advantage of his gifts on tonight's episode, "Danse Vaudou." In anticipation of this larger showcase for the character, Charles Halford spoke with EW about what it's...

The track record of TV series produced from comic books is spotty at best. For every show that was as weird and cool as “The Maxx” you’ve got at least three that were every bit as cheesy and muddled as “The Flash” (which starred John Wesley Shipp). I’m not trying to claim that “The Maxx” was ever wholly coherent, but if you’ve read the series or are reading the reprint series, then you know that when it comes to adaptations of material, watching “The Maxx” is a whole lot like reading it. I’m also not saying that I didn’t like “The Flash” when it aired in 1990. I’ve got both shows on DVD and have no regrets about owning either one.

Does the TV version of Constantine live up to its layered, lyrical Hellblazer legacy? Not yet, but give it time...
This review contains spoilers.
1.1 Non Est Asylum
“Whoever you are, I’m a nasty piece of work. Ask anybody.”
I’m no Master of the Dark Arts, but reviewing a TV pilot is a bit of a psychic exercise in itself. Reviewing a pilot of a show with a history as momentous as Constantine’s is like doing a psychic reading, exorcising Nergal, battling lung cancer, and trying to bang several attractive women and attractive men all at the same time. How can we possibly tell from 45 minutes of screen time whether Constantine will do justice to the greatness that Hellblazer built up in over 25 years of edgy storytelling, scathing social commentary, and fearless leaps into the horror of the human psyche? We can’t. But I’m going to try anyway.

Former Outkast star-turned-actor André Benjamin completely convinces as guitar legend Jimi Hendrix in this classy biopic. Writer-director John Ridley (who wrote Steve McQueen's 12 Years A Slave) concentrates on the years before Hendrix became famous with Imogen Poots as Linda Keith, the girl who would introduce him to manager Chas Chandler, and Hayley Atwell as the musician's long-term girlfriend. Don't expect the hits but a poignant portrait that captures the spirit of the man.

Lynsey de Paul, the British singer-songwriter, saved the lives of three people through organ donations following her death.
Lynsey de Paul's Organs Donated
De Paul died last week after suffering a brain hemorrhage at age 64. Since de Paul had signed up as an organ donor prior to her death, three of her viable organs were able to be delivered to those in need.
“I am extremely proud to say that even in death, she gave three people the chance of life," de Paul’s brother John Rubin told the mourners at her funeral Tuesday, reported The Independent.
De Paul was a star in the UK, becoming the first woman to win an Ivor Novello award. Throughout her prolific career, she had five top 20 hits, including 1972’s “Sugar Me” and “Getting a Drag,” as well as 1973’s “Won’t Somebody Dance With Me.”

Before the Haze: Ridley’s Nuanced Portrait Worthy of Legendary Subject
After a rather cool reception following high profile festival play at Toronto and SXSW, John Ridley’s Jimi Hendrix biopic, Jimi: All is By My Side will be sure to garner a divisive response upon a theatrical release as well. Unable to acquire the rights to any of his music from the Hendrix estate, those looking for an audio celebration of the legend’s greatest hits will surely be disappointed. Likewise, Ridley, who wrote the screenplay and won an Oscar for 2013 Best Picture Winner 12 Years a Slave, does something even more daring by covering a specific period in Hendrix’s life, paring down the scope for what becomes a startlingly intimate glance at the man’s demeanor and philosophies. In this exclusive clip from "Jimi: All Is By My Side," Jimi Hendrix gives the Brits a taste of his talent.
André Benjamin, aka André 3000, is in full rock star mode as he rocks out in this scene that's a recreation of the night Hendrix jammed with Cream for the first time. Eric Clapton (Danny McColgan) is quite skeptical of their musical guest, but after he watches Jimi's fancy fingering, he retreats backstage and mutters, "Is he really that f**king good?" to Chas Chandler (Andrew Buckley), Jimi's manager. In real life, Clapton has shared a variation of this story with various sources over the years, including The Guardian.
See for yourself just how crazy good Benjamin's portrayal of Hendrix is!

Rapper Andre Benjamin worked obsessively on his startling portrayal of Jimi Hendrix in the new film Jimi: All Is By My Side, and he already has ideas about a potential biopic for his group Outkast. "It would be great to make an Outkast movie right now, but instead of really serious, make it a full comedy — like Kevin Hart would play Big Boi," he said of his rapping partner last night. And as himself? "We should cast somebody stupid — like Leonardo [DiCaprio]."

The North East of England. Home to the Geordies, the Mackems, the Pit-Yakkers, the Poolies and the Smoggies.
About 3 million of us occupy this canny little place: filled with vast history, heritage, and – unfortunately – reality TV horrors.
Our hometowns are portrayed to the watching world through the mining villages of Billy Elliott, Catherine Cookson prose, or the Fanta-faced sex beasts of Geordie Shore. It’s a wonder the rest of Europe know there’s any normal inhabitants in these once Viking-invaded lands.
Still, some marvellous wonders have risen from this old chunk of Britain: Mr Bean is from Durham; Sting from Northumberland; Lucozade was originally made in a small chemist in Newcastle… and of course, there’s Greggs. It was Geordie music producer Chas Chandler who first discovered Jimi Hendrix and brought him to Newcastle and George Stephenson – the “Father of Railways” – who built the first inter-city railway line.

The lucky folks at South By Southwest will get to see the much-anticipated biopic “All is By My Side” next week, and now we can all have a taste of what Andre 3000 is cooking up.

While chatting with future manager Chas Chandler, Hendrix contemplates what it would mean for him to relocate to London.
Andre (as Jimi) explains, “I don't want to get caught up in those kind of labels, though. I don't want it to be, 'Well Ok, he's playing the blues,' or 'He's playing R&B or soul or whatever.’”
To prepare for the role, Mr. 3000 “listened to hours of interviews. I watched films- watched his mannerisms.”...

It’s hard to square the subtitle of Becoming Jimi Hendrix: From Southern Crossroads To Psychedelic London, The Untold Story Of A Musical Genius with the abundant amount of literature already devoted to the groundbreaking guitarist. Nevertheless, there’s something to be said for concentrating on the years during which Hendrix forged his style as an R&B sideman, which California authors Steven Roby and Brad Schreiber do in their new study. Between 1962, when he joined the Army’s 101st Airborne Division, and 1966, when new manager Chas Chandler took him to London, set up auditions for the band ...
