Brent Montgomery’s media company Wheelhouse has secured its first outside round of funding, landing a minority investment from former Time Warner chief Jeff Bewkes’ investment firm Alignment Growth.
As part of the transaction, Bewkes — who founded Alignment with Alex Iosilevich and Kevin Tsujihara — will be joining Wheelhouse’s board of directors.
Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, but Wheelhouse says the size of the investment from Alignment “will enable Wheelhouse to build an infrastructure that attracts industry-leading talent and accelerates growth via strategic acquisitions.”
Founded in 2018 by Montgomery, who was then coming off his sale of Leftfield Entertainment to ITV in 2014, and Jimmy Kimmel, Wheelhouse assets currently include Spoke Studios, Campfire, Butternut, Wheelhouse UK and DNA. Additionally, Wheelhouse has production partnerships with Kimmel’s Kimmelot and celebrity chef David Chang’s Majordomo Media.

Gerry Turner and Theresa Nist were the first Golden Bachelor couple, and less than two months after their engagement was revealed on television on Nov. 30, 2023, they tied the knot in the ABC franchise’s first-ever Golden Wedding.
Now, about three months after the televised event on Jan. 4, the Bachelor‘s history-making couple have announced they are getting a divorce.
They sat down with Good Morning America to reveal their decision but offered little to an audience that will want to know what happened after witnessing their inspiring later-in-life love story unfold. ABC News interviewer Juju Chang’s takeaway after the sit-down was, “It’s a head-scratcher.”
One day before the pretaped and live finale aired on the After the Final Rose special — where the giddy senior couple, aged 72 for Turner and 70 for Nist, would go on to tell the world just how over-the-moon in love they were — The Hollywood Reporter...

Ma Hsin Yi was an eminent officer and a military general of the late Qing Dynasty who, together with other prominent officers, formed the Green Standard Army to fight against the rebels during the Taiping Rebellion. Chang Cheh's “The Blood Brothers” is an epic historical drama retelling his assassination by his officer and sworn brother Chang Wein Hsiang, played by David Chiang. The Hong Kong government has licensed the broadcast rights to the Summer Olympic Games in Paris. It intends to relicense the rights to four TV broadcasters in the city – Tvb, ViuTV, Hoy TV and government-owned Rthk. While in most territories, broadcasters negotiate directly with the International Olympic Committee or its agents, the Hong Kong government previously intervened in bidding for rights to the Tokyo Olympics, held in 2021. It also organized large public screenings in shopping malls.
“By procuring the broadcasting rights for these two games in Hong Kong, members of the public will be able to enjoy the Paris Og and PG [Paralympic Games] on television free of charge, and to cheer for Mainland and Hong Kong athletes,” said Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism, Kevin Yeung.

Quest three of Physical: 100 season two ended in a bittersweet manner. The seventh episode ended with no winners in sight. ‘The Mine Transportation Match,’ the third quest, had the last three teams struggling to finish the game by testing the strength of every participant. Out of three teams in the second group, Kim Dong-hyun, Lee Jae-yoon, and Hong Beom-seok had to face the third and fourth rounds of ‘The Mine Transportation Match,’ which was physically taxing. Back in 2010 in Hong Kong, Wong Ching-po shot the cult “Revenge: A Love Story”, about a man that kills pregnant women, taking away their unborn babies. His later works, however, were mostly martial arts/action movies that definitely did not reach the standards of the aforementioned. That is until this year and “The Pig, the Snake and the Pigeon” which seems to bring him back to the Cat III space that he thrived, this time, though, in a Taiwanese production.

Wong Ching-po’s The Pig, the Snake, and the Pigeon takes a glimpse into the gruesome criminal world of Taiwan. Through its portrayal of a notorious criminal’s life, Ching-po talks about the inner conflicts of people on this side of morality. This film presents a fresh take on vigilantism and the repercussions of arrogance, greed, and deception. Additionally, I think the movie also serves to lay bare the superstitions and spiritual beliefs of people with such violent inclinations and how one views mortality within oneself. In essence, this film serves as a spectacle reflecting the multifaceted nature of morality and human nature, compelling the audience to look at the blurred lines between good and evil.

“Typhoon was like a meteorite in the midst of a Mandarin-speaking industry mired in propaganda and a resolutely commercial Taiwanese cinema. The film is a raging storm that shakes genres, breaks the conventions of the time and offers the actors their best roles. Pan Lei had already distinguished himself with his original scripts and previous films, which always went outside the official discourse. Here he can indulge his sensuality, as well as his passion for outdoor shots and for characters with an evil nature.” – Wafa Ghermani, Cinemathèque française.

The Taiwan International Documentary Festival (Tidf) is delighted to reveal the recipient of the prestigious “Outstanding Contribution Award” for its 14th edition: the revered 80-year-old master, Chang Chao-tang. This accolade recognizes Chang's profound and lasting contributions to the landscape of documentary filmmaking in Taiwan. Additionally, Tidf pays homage to the late ethnographic documentary pioneer Hu Tai-li, who passed away in 2022, through the introduction of a “Special Commemoration,” a first for the festival.
The curatorial team at Tidf has selected two masterpieces by Chang Chao-tang, The Boat-Burning Festival (1980) and Homage to Chen-Da (2000), to open the 14th iteration of the festival. The former intimately captures the enigmatic ritual of Burning the King Boat in Sucuo Village, Tainan County. By the early 1980s, the Shaw Brothers Studio had been eclipsed as Hong Kong’s most popular genre film studio by Golden Harvest and their more comedic take on martial arts cinema with stars like Jackie Chan and Sammo Hung. Plagued by lower theatrical returns, which was exacerbated by the explosion of piracy in Southeast Asia with the advent of home video, the studio would—barring the occasional efforts in later years—cease film production in 1986 and pivot to making TV. As such, Shout! Factory’s fourth box set of Shaw Brothers films, all of which were released between 1980 and 1984, presents a cross-section of the studio’s last great burst of filmmaking.

Exclusive: There’s some more change at Fremantle, this time in the documentary space.
Mandy Chang is stepping back from her role as Global Head of Documentaries, two and a half years after joining the Rtl-owned company.
However, she is staying in the Fremantle family as she will continue to run Undeniable, the documentary label that it launched earlier this year.
In response, Mark Reynolds, who previously worked at BBC Studios, will take over as Interim Global Head of Documentaries, starting in January.
Elaine Morris, who is head of production, and Bernie Kay will report to Reynolds when he starts on January 8. Reynolds himself will report to Andrea Scrosati, Fremantle’s Group COO and CEO of Continental Europe.
“Mark will continue to support the growth of our documentaries business and drive collaboration across our production companies and labels around the world,” Scrosati wrote in an internal email seen by Deadline.

While it’s hardly news that most of us are under some form of surveillance any time we’re in public, the extent of Big Brother’s activities still has the capacity to astound. That’s nowhere truer than in the People’s Republic of China, whose efforts to monitor its citizens’ every action (public or otherwise) would make Orwell blush. “One Child Nation” co-director Jialing Zhang once again turns the camera on her home country in “Total Trust,” the kind of eye-opening documentary that makes you realize you know far less about its subject than you thought you did — however bad you may think China’s surveillance state is, Zhang can assure you it’s far worse.
Taking its title from a dubious news report claiming that public trust in the government reached a staggering 98% at the height of the pandemic, the film’s very existence runs counter to that claim.

Hollywood’s role in Asian TV has changed in the streaming era and age of hyper-local content. A top-down sales and distribution position has eased into one of co-production, co-financing and acquisition.
A high-powered array of western executives offered experienced views and discussed their current positions at a panel session Thursday within the Asia Television Forum & Market in Singapore.
“We want to be an additive partner on shows that cannot be created locally, said Georgina Gonzalez, director of scripted series and global series at Universal Int’l Studios, NBCU. “We are typically looking at bigger budget or creative packages […] We mostly act like a traditional studio and can finance development or help with optioning material. But we can also do deficit financing as something is going into production and recoup afterwards through sales.”

Spock (Leonard Nimoy) was perhaps the most striking and memorable character from "Star Trek," back when it first started to take off in syndication in the early 1970s. On a ship full of humans, Spock was half-human and half-Vulcan. He had angled eyebrows and pointed, Mephistophelean ears. It's also noted throughout the season that Spock has green blood (although he never bleeds green on camera), and McCoy (DeForest Kelley) once noted that Spock's heart "is where his liver should be." Spock is also stronger than a human, very long-lived (Vulcans can live to age 250), and has a much more sophisticated brain than a human's; Vulcans are intimidatingly intelligent.
The fact that Spock has green blood, however, wasn't merely a whim of "Star Trek" creator Gene Roddenberry. It seems that Roddenberry once visited the famed Mütter Museum, a curious medical archive located inside the College of Physicians in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The...

One of the best parts of "Rick and Morty" is how comfortable they are with switching things up if the status quo isn't working. In the first two seasons, for instance,it felt as if the Interdimensional Cable episodes were being set up as this show's equivalent to the Treehouse of Horror episodes of "The Simpsons." They were once-a-season anthology episodes, except these were made up of a string of fun, self-contained clips from the interdimensional cable channels Rick and Morty were flipping through.
The problem was that by the time we reached season 2's interdimensional cable episode, the premise was already feeling a little played out. There are only so many whacky commercials you can do before the jokes stop landing. So, season 3 switched up the format and gave us "Morty's Mindblowers," in which Rick shows Morty a bunch of his deleted memories. Like the first two seasons, this...

Perhaps one of the most legendary titles in the genre, King Hu's iconic martial arts epic “Come Drink with Me” was a revelation when it first premiered in the mid-60s. Being one of the first films to adapt a stylish bent to the martial arts scenes while still keeping it's artistic touch, the film essentially launched Shaw Brothers as a studio for adrenaline-charged, hard-hitting action films.

Julie Chen Moonves admits she never revealed her true feelings about her exit from “The Talk” until she released her audio memoir, “But First, God,” in which she describes the choice as one she herself didn’t want to make.
“That was a hard time. I felt stabbed in the back,” Chen Moonves said in an interview on Good Morning America with Juju Chang. “I was.”
Chang brought up Chen Moonves’ description of her exit from “The Talk” as “a decision made for her.” Chang also brought up reconciliation, which Chen Moonves folds into her spiritual journey outlined in the book, and when Chang brought up whether Chen Moonves had ever asked her husband, Les Moonves, former CEO of CBS, about the truth of the sexual assault allegations brought against him, she answered calmly.

Julie Chen Moonves said she questioned her husband, Leslie Moonves, over the 2018 sexual abuse allegations that resulted in his resignation as CBS CEO and disputed a previous statement that she made the decision to leave The Talk after a decade as co-host.
Chen Moonves opened up about both topics, while also declining to discuss the “believe her” movement with Juju Chang on Good Morning America on Monday. The Big Brother host appeared as part of a segment promoting her new memoir, But First, God, in which she details how in the past five years she “found God.” It’s an experience she says changed her from her a “self-absorbed, career-minded, vain, gossipy, fun to be with, but probably kind of a shallow person.”
During the discussion, Chen Moonves claimed that despite her statement announcing her departure from The Talk in 2018 as a move of her own, her exit was not on her own terms.

Korean crime-action webtoon “Knuckle Girl” is being adapted as an original film production for Amazon’s Prime Video. It is structured as a Korea-Japan co-venture.
The narrative revolves around a promising woman boxer, Ran, who takes on school bullies and participates in illegal bouts. When her sister is kidnapped by a criminal gang, Ran must risk her own life, by breaking into the underworld wearing brass knuckledusters, rather than boxing gloves.
The film is directed by Chang, the Korean director who goes by a single name and whose 2014 film “The Target” debuted in the Midnight screening section at Cannes. Writing credits go to Yoo Gap-yeol, whose “Emergency Declaration” also debuted in Cannes, in 2021, and Jeong Byeong-sik (“The Villain”) who wrote the adaptation.
Despite the Korean pedigree, the film stars Japanese female actor Miyoshi Iyaka, who achieved fame with 2010 film “Confession” and stars in both seasons of Netflix’s Japanese dystopian thriller “Alice in Borderland.

Beijing, Sep 5 (Ians) A subtype of avian flu virus, endemic in poultry farms in China, is undergoing mutational changes, which could increase the risk of the disease being passed on to humans, warns a study.
Researchers in China and Nottingham, the UK, also said that the findings raise concerns of a potential epidemic or pandemic in the making and that concerted research is necessary to closely monitor such viruses in poultry and humans.
The results, published in the journal Cell, report on the characterisation of a human isolate — from a human patient — of the H3N8 avian influenza virus (Aiv).
Using laboratory mice and ferrets as models for human infection, the study found that the virus has undergone several adaptive changes to cause severe animal infections and making it transmissible by the airborne route between animals.

In the universe of James Bond, there are several tiers of villains. There are the primary villains, of course, the mad geniuses like Ernst Stavro Blofeld, Auric Goldfinger, Karl Stromberg, or Max Zorin, who plot to take down financial institutions, governments, military installations, or even the entire world. Sometimes it’s even all of the above Next, however, are the secondary adversaries who may support the main villain in their plans but are often either in it for their own financial gain (as opposed to world conquest), or because they’re in trouble, and this is their only way out. Think of Pussy Galore from Goldfinger, Milton Krest from Licence to Kill, General Ouromov from GoldenEye, Professor Dent from Dr. No… and the list goes on and on.
And then there are the henchmen who are there for one sole reason: to kill James Bond, or in the words of one famous villain,...

Hot on the heels of their first collection of Shaw Brothers movies, Shout! Factory’s Shaw Brothers Classics Vol. 2 continues the ongoing, multi-label effort to restore and release notable entries in the Hong Kong studio’s vast catalog. As it did with their previous collection, Shout! limits the selections for this second box set to a concentrated period of the studio’s productions. Whereas the 1967-69 range of the first box showed the studio frantically capitalizing on the breakout success of The One-Armed Swordsmen with a slew of like-minded wuxia films, the broader selection here among the first half of the ’70s finds Shaw Brothers both setting and chasing after trends.
Shout!’s first volume demonstrated how the Shaw Brothers studio made so many functionally identical movies, between the revenge-based plots, sword-based action, and reused sets, that within two years of The One-Armed Swordsmen’s paradigm shift, the house brand was already getting stale.

Back in 1974, Shaw Brothers director Chang Cheh together with a crew of around fifty people including his favorites David Chiang, Ti Lung and Fu Sheng, left Hong Kong and started producing films in Taiwan. His newfound team under the name of Long Bow Company would continue to produce films till 1976. Although Chang was making films independently, he was still related to Shaw Brothers which gave his full support.

Documentary filmmakers were reminded of the importance of storytelling during a panel discussion about their craft as part of the Sarajevo Film Festival’s industry program CineLink earlier this week.
“It’s about telling the story. It doesn’t have to be a complex story. It could be anything, but it’s the way you tell it and it’s the characters you tell it through,” said Lucie Kon, commissioning editor at BBC’s doc strand Storyville. She explained that filmmakers should package their project not only with a brilliant story, but one that can charm a broad audience within its first five minutes.
The visuals should also be flashy. “Even the still that tells you what story it is on the poster needs to be like: ‘Wow, I want to see that!’”

The two-time world champions executed three dives that earned more than 80 points apiece to inflate their winning 362.76-point tally, 74.76 points ahead of runners-up Caeli McKay and Kate Miller of Canada, reports Xinhua.
“The Berlin Super Final is very important for us and we take it very seriously. But it’s a tight schedule after the World Championships, and we didn’t have much time to rest. Actually we’re not very satisfied with our dives today,” said 17-year-old Chen.
Chen paired with Quan to claim the World Championships title in the synchronized platform twice, and World Cup gold on many occasions, but the...

This Star Trek: Strange New Worlds article contains spoilers.
Andorian chief engineer Hemmer was one of the highlights of the first season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, thanks in large part to actor Bruce Horak’s gruff sweetness. Fans truly felt the loss when Hemmer sacrificed himself to save the crew from the Gorn in “All Those Who Wander,” even if it made way for the equally wonderful Carol Kane as new chief engineer Pelia.
But that didn’t mark the end of Horak’s time in Star Trek. We got a brief glimpse of Hemmer as both a zombie projection and a priority one YouTube video in season 2’s “Lost in Translation,” as Uhura called upon the teaching of her old friend to solve a complex communication problem. Now, Horak is back in the new musical episode, “Subspace Rhapsody,” but not as Hemmer.

After a soft start in China, Barbie began to make inroads in the world’s second-biggest movie market in its second frame, buoyed by great critics scores and strong word of mouth.
Barbie opened to $8 million in China last weekend, claiming fifth place amid tough competition from local hits Creation of the Gods I: Kingdom of Storms, Chang An and Never Say Never. The modest total seemed to suggest that Barbie would go the way of Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One and a slew of recent Hollywood tentpoles that opened weak in China and failed to show legs — feeding into the trend that Chinese consumers were turning away from Western fare at the multiplex.
But unlike other recent Hollywood releases, Greta Gerwig’s had excellent scores on China’s most respected movie apps when it opened, earning 9.4 on Maoyan, 9.3 on Tao Piao Piao and 8.6 on Douban. This, along...

Barbie‘s phenomenal box office opening in the U.S. wasn’t matched in China — not by a long shot.
The Greta Gerwig-directed Warner Bros. blockbuster opened to just $8 million in China, finishing the weekend in fifth place behind a bunch of local Chinese hits. In North America, the film debuted to a record-setting $155 million.
The soft start for Barbie continues a trend of Hollywood films earning much less in China than they once did. Tom Cruise’s Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One badly lost its opening in China the weekend prior with a third-place start behind a pair of Chinese holdovers.
Word of mouth for Barbie has been strong, despite the tepid sales. Its social scores are 9.4 on Maoyan, 9.3 on Tao Piao Piao and 8.6 on Douban. On Monday, the good buzz appeared to be giving Barbie a modest boost, with its sales ranking climbing into third place for the day.

Each week we highlight the noteworthy titles that have recently hit streaming platforms in the United States. Check out this week’s selections below and past round-ups here.
Babylon (Damien Chazelle)
Those seeking an insightful exploration of cinema history in Hollywood’s Golden Age or a nuanced, affecting character study on the lives within this early era will mostly like be disappointed by Damien Chazelle’s latest. Babylon is a brash, bombastic, unwieldy comic opera conveyed with enough bad taste and directorial panache that it—refreshingly—registers as a refutation of the well-mannered prestige drama to which these kinds of nostalgic odes often conform. And while there’s a touch of wistfulness in regards to the communal power of big-screen cinema, the film is more defined by an acidic unsentimentality, both when it comes to its characters and the precarious world they inhabit. Capturing the mad, violent clash of high...

Fukuoka (Japan), July 17 (Ians) China’s Chang Yani completed a hattrick of world titles in the women’s three-metre synchronised springboard diving at the World Aquatics Championships here on Monday.
The 21-year-old Chang and her partner Chen Yiwen scored a total of 341.94 points, beating Britain’s Scarlett Mew Jensen and Yasmin Harper to second place by a gap of 45.36 points.
Italy’s Chiara Pellacani and Elena Bertocchi finished third with 285.99, reports news agency Xinhua.
“I am very excited to get a gold medal,” said Chen, 24. “It was not easy for us to have this gold medal (but) we have practiced so hard. We both have to work together. We keep cheering for each other.”
Chang won the event for the first time at the 2017 Budapest World Championships with Shi Tingmao and secured the title again with Chen last year when the World Championships returned to the Hungarian capital.
