Sunday Am updated: In what is a record opening during the pandemic for a female-driven feature, Paramount’s Sandra Bullock-Channing Tatum romantic comedy adventure The Lost City is opening to $31M after a $11.55M Friday and $11.8M Saturday.
While the older female demographic has been known to be cautious about moviegoing during the pandemic, they indeed showed up at 61% overall, with those over 35 repping close to half the crowd. Previously, over Valentine’s Day weekend, two-glossy female targeted movies tried to deliver, but did not in their openings: Death on the Nile ($12.8M) and Marry Me ($7.9M).
Moreover, give it up for an original piece of content opening at the box office off of sheer star power, and not brand IP.
“It’s kind of a throwback,” says Paramount Domestic Distribution Boss Chris Aronson this morning. “But it shows that movies still matter.”

The Lost City began filming in the jungles of the Dominican Republic in May 2021. That is less than a year ago. But considering how different the world was even 10 months back, it may as well have been a lifetime for star, producer, and overall Lost City champion, Sandra Bullock. It’s easy to forget now, but the vaccine rollout was still in its early fitful days during the movie’s pre-production phase, and until those cameras rolled the process was its own desperate escape.
“You just shot me back trying to find a vaccine,” Bullock says when we mention the remarkable time period that The Lost City was made during. “I mean, I was running around trying to find one. They were not available. By the time we had gotten there for the scout, they were becoming more available, but I felt like I was on the black market, you know?...

Nearly ten years ago, Sandra Bullock pledged she would never again make a sequel to one of her many memorable movies.
It was 2013, the year she and Melissa McCarthy released the buddy cop comedy “The Heat” — which grossed nearly $230 million at the worldwide box office. While simultaneously making the awards rounds for “Gravity” that year, press relentlessly asked if she would return for a second film with McCarthy.
“I’m not doing a sequel to ‘The Heat,'” she said at the time. “I’ve done two sequels. They were horrible. What Melissa and I had was beautiful. We might do another film together. I think we should do a silent film together.”
Film fans and social media users connected the dots, and guessed the two “horrible” sequels Bullock was referring to: the followup to her star-making film “Speed,” which grossed only a third of the original’s domestic box...

Just like the SXSW world premiere of The Lost City was a homecoming for Sandra Bullock, who lives here down in Austin, it marked a return for brothers Adam and Aaron Nee, who jump-started their filmmaking careers at the cinephile fest with the 2006 movie The Last Romantic.
That pic cost $18,000, and their latest SXSW was a fire-breathing Hollywood event movie which cost an estimated $74 million. If Saturday night’s premiere of The Lost City was a test screening, then expect this Paramount release to certainly secure box office treasures as the laughs and the applause throughout the movie didn’t cease.
While the guys dabbled in Hollywood for a while between acting and Comedy Central pilot-directing gigs, their careers were fast-tracked after pitching themselves for the Bumblebee directing job. Aaron Nee has a knack for VFX and they casted his daughter to star with the yellow Transformer in a short...

Sandra Bullock brought the star power back in-person to the SXSW Film Festival on Saturday night, unveiling her new romantic adventure “The Lost City.”
Flanked by costar Daniel Radcliffe and directors Adam and Aaron Nee, fans across multiple generations packed Austin’s Paramount Theatre to watch Bullock tangle in the jungle with Channing Tatum. The Paramount Pictures release sees Bullock as a widowed romance novelist whose latest book tour is eclipsed by the himbo model who graces her covers (Tatum). Turns out, her fact-based plots about an ancient culture offer credible clues to the location of a priceless treasure, and a petulant billionaire (Radcliffe) kidnaps Bullock to recover it.
After earning big laughs and applause throughout the two-hour runtime, Bullock (who also produced the project) was overcome to screen the film in public. “It was the first time seeing it with an audience. In post-production, everything was Zoom, everything was virtual,...

Before the world was turned upside down by a global pandemic, Sandra Bullock and Liza Chasin were on the hunt for hidden gold. A script that had been sitting on a shelf for seven long years had just come into their possession. And while not perfect, something shiny and vital was glittering under the surface.
“We knew there was a reason it was sitting on a shelf,” Bullock says. Then came the lightbulb moment. “Oh my God, I see it! I see it! I know what it should be,” she declares. “Then you get really excited, then you panic because you’re absolutely convinced that there are no writers out there that can then bring it to the level we had in our head.”
Luckily for star and producer Bullock and co-producer Liza Chasin, that writer did in fact exist, and her name is Dana Fox. Working on the Oren Uziel script,...

It was a triumphant second weekend for indie Stillwater from Focus Features, which hit the $10 million mark in 2,611 theatres (up by 80) and 233 Dma’s in North America, where it was no. 5. The Matt Damon-starrer held up strongly from its debut, dipping 45% — compared with a 64% drop for The Green Knight and a 55% decline for Jungle Cruise. Stillwater’s run may not be not specialty-small, but deserves a shout-out here for a standout performance. The complex drama garnered Damon a standing ovation in Cannes but had some concerned at the film’s theatrical prospects in a wide-release battle against big studio franchises on one hand and smaller arthouse fare on the other.
Damon plays an unemployed Oklahoma oil rig worker who travels to Marseille to help his daughter (Abigail Breslin) who’s in prison for murder. The film continued to resonate in the South and Midwest with the top five highest-grossing...

In town for the world premiere of out-of-competition Cannes Film Festival entry Stillwater, star Matt Damon appeared moved by emotion during a near-five-minute standing ovation tonight. The drama, directed by Spotlight Oscar-winner Tom McCarthy, brought the assembled crowd to its feet in the Grand Théâtre Lumière as the lights came up on film’s team, and brought tears to Damon’s eyes.
Stillwater centers on Damon’s Bill Baker, an Oklahoma oil-rig roughneck with a shoddy past as a father who heads to Marseille, hellbent on freeing his daughter (Abigail Breslin), an exchange student imprisoned for murdering her girlfriend, a crime she says she didn’t commit. He’s the proverbial fish out of water who finds an ally in a local single mother (Camille Cottin) and her daughter (Lilou Siauvaud).
