Cult classic sitcom Green Wing has been resurrected as a podcast with the original cast and creative team.
Back in 2004, fresh from the success of sketch show Smack The Pony, writer Victoria Pile created Green Wing, a sitcom set in a hospital.
With an ensemble cast that included Tamsin Greig and Stephen Mangan – who would later reunite to star opposite Matt LeBlanc in Episodes – the comedy is helped enormously by committed clowning the cast, particularly Mark Heap and Michelle Gomez. The show ran for two series from 2004 to 2006 and, in a move more in common with American sitcoms, had a large pool of writers.
After the show ended, the same creative team made the terrific University comedy Campus in 2009, which despite only running for one series is well worth tracking down, especially for the tour de force performance from Andy Nyman as megalomaniacal monster and Vice Chancellor Jonty De Wolfe.

Living is a drama film starring Bill Nighy and directed by Oliver Hermanus.
An excellent remake with a brilliant performance by Bill Nighy. A great movie. However, it might not be the kind of film you feel like watching. Nonetheless, if you give it a chance, you’ll be glad you did.
Storyline
William is an elderly man who receives a devastating medical diagnosis: he has six months to live.
About the Film
Brilliant in every way, from the cinematography to the superb direction by Oliver Hermanus, who manages to transfer Kurosawa’s original film to an English setting – a challenge for any director.
It draws on and adopts from the original and is totally faithful to it, in addition to providing – and, above all, counting on – an exceptional actor in what is probably the role of his life. Billy Nighty is magnificent in a film that, once seen, could not exist without him.

Early on in “What’s Love Got to Do With It?,” enterprising London-based filmmaker Zoe (Lily James) pitches a proposed documentary about Muslim arranged marriages to a pair of white male commissioners. They’re bored and disengaged until they realize how the topic can be dressed up in the tropes and lingo of Western romantic comedy to appeal to a general British audience: One suggests interview inserts in the style of “When Harry Met Sally,” the other name-drops “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” as a reference point. When Zoe suggests titling the doc “Love Contractually,” the deal is done.
Sharper than anything else in Shekhar Kapur’s pleasant, easygoing comedy, the scene neatly satirizes how nuanced cross-cultural material can be blandly packaged and whitewashed for the mainstream — a point that would land harder if “What’s Love Got to Do With It?” didn’t proceed to do much the same thing. At a push,...

With the traditional white and trite rom-com formula looking increasingly tired, there is an exciting opportunity for contemporary cinema to shake things up. The search for a partner in today’s more diverse society – navigating love and marriage traditions across cultures – is ground ripe for exploration.
Unfortunately, What’s Love Got To Do With It? stumbles on that ground pretty early on and never regains its feet.
Zoe (Lily James), our mildly unlikeable protagonist, is a documentarian with terrible taste in men and a mother who is overly invested in her finding The One. Cath (Emma Thompson), Zoe’s mum, might be bitter about the brutal end of her marriage but she still believes that her little girl should be working harder to find her own happily ever after.
Until Zoe finally walks down the aisle, Cath can content herself with living vicariously through her close friends and neighbours the Khans...

"Small wonder I didn't notice what I was becoming." Sony Pictures Classics has revealed the final official US trailer for Living, the English-language remake of the beloved Akira Kurosawa film Ikiru from 1952. It's still one of the best films of the year (read my review). We already posted the US teaser trailer and a full UK trailer a few months ago. The US release is in December just before the end of the year. Set in London in the 1950s, Bill Nighy stars in the lead role as Williams, a grumpy, curmudgeonly government office worker who has an awakening when he's diagnosed with terminal cancer. He realizes he hasn't really be "living" and goes about trying to change that. Also starring Alex Sharp, Adrian Rawlins, Hubert Burton, Oliver Chris, Michael Cochrane, and Aimee Lou Wood in a breakout role as Margaret Harris. Arranged marriage is a tried-and-true trope in Bollywood romcoms, which typically champion love and social progress over tradition, even if they’ve hardly moved the needle for decades despite the genre’s immense popularity. Though set in London and revolving around arranged marriage in the South Asian diaspora, it’s easy to make assumptions about Toronto Film Festival premiere “What’s Love Got to Do With It?” based on genre conventions and cliché.
But this is most definitely not what Bollywood romcom enthusiasts might expect. For starters, the story concerns overseas Pakistanis and not Indians. The film also doesn’t outright frame arranged marriage as something outdated and stifling. If anything, it encourages viewers to not rush to judgment.
Moreover, its protagonist is actually a white woman. Zoe (Lily James), is a socially conscious documentary filmmaker from an ethnically diverse part of London. Her mother, Cath (Emma Thompson), while fully embracing the multiculturalism around her,...

Having absolutely nothing to do with the Tina Turner biopic of the same name (minus the question mark), What’s Love Got To Do With It? serves as a master class in how to adhere faithfully to the classic romantic-comedy template and yet still emerge with something that delivers delightfully on both sides of the hyphen.
Serving as the first foray into the rom-com arena for filmmaker Shekhar Kapur, of Elizabeth and Bandit Queen renown, the effervescent cross-culture confection may not be the first to examine the practice of arranged marriage in the age of Tinder, but Kapur’s soulful touch, working from a knowing script by Jemima Khan, hits all the desired marks.

“Trying” has been renewed for a fourth season at Apple TV+. The British comedy series will return for another new slate of episodes.
The news of the renewal for the favorably reviewed series comes three days ahead of its upcoming Season 3 finale, which will debut on the streamer on Friday.
When “Trying” premiered its first season on Apple TV+ in May 2020, all eight episodes became available to watch on the platform on the same day. Since then, the series has shifted to a weekly format, with a new episode becoming available on the platform each Friday this season. The Season 2 and Season 3 premiere dates are an exception, which both saw two episodes released at once to launch a new season.

Since then, the series has shifted to a weekly format, with a new episode becoming available on the platform each Friday this season. The Season 2 and Season 3 premiere dates are an exception, which both saw two episodes released at once to launch a new season.

Chicago – As Esther Smith says in the following Podtalk, she chose acting because she wanted to indulge in the uniqueness of individuals. In the Apple TV+ series “Trying,” Esther portrays Nikki and Rafe Spall portrays Jason, a couple who desires children and ends up … at Season Two’s end … with two adoptees. Season Three began streaming last month.

"Small wonder I didn't notice what I was becoming…" Sony Pictures Classics has revealed an official teaser trailer for the film Living, which is actually an English-language remake of the beloved Akira Kurosawa film Ikiru from 1952. This premiered at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival and earned rave reviews as one of the best films of the fest, and a rare remake that actually lives up to the original in every way (which is an especially impressive feat considering the original is one of Akira Kurosawa's best films). Set in London in the 1950s, Bill Nighy stars in the lead role as Williams, a grumpy, curmudgeonly government office worker who has an awakening when he's diagnosed with terminal cancer. He realizes he hasn't really be "living" and goes about trying to change that. Also starring Alex Sharp, Adrian Rawlins, Hubert Burton, Oliver Chris, Michael Cochrane, and Aimee Lou Wood as Margaret Harris.

Formula 1 Finale Goes Terrestrial
Sky has inked a deal with Channel 4 for Sky Sports’ live coverage of the Formula 1 season finale to also air on the free to air channel this Sunday. Lewis Hamilton stands on the brink of history – victory in Abu Dhabi would clinch an unprecedented eighth world title. The Brit is currently on equal points with adversary Max Verstappen. Sky is billing the race as ‘Lewis v Max: Decider in the Desert’. Earlier this year Channel 4 struck a lucrative deal with Amazon to share the streamer’s coverage of the US Open featuring Brit Emma Raducanu and the broadcaster also secured the Cricket World Cup final from Sky. The F1 deal is likely to be a similarly costly pact. Stephen van Rooyen, EVP & CEO UK & Europe Sky said: “Sunday’s Grand Prix is one of the biggest sporting events in the last decade, and could...

[Editor’s Note: The following interview contains spoilers for “Trying” Season 2.]
Wedding-day antics can go wrong in any number of ways. The last episode of “Trying” Season 2 is an ending filled with surprise boyfriends, unexpected proposals, emergency news, and a first dance set to bebop jazz. Any of those things in isolation could send a TV comedy careening from light-hearted fun into disaster. But this Apple TV+ show has proven repeatedly that it can handle all the absurdity in the lives of Nikki (Esther Smith) and Jason (Rafe Spall) while still making their journey together feel real.
As the director of both seasons, Jim O’Hanlon has been keeping his finger on the pulse of how the shows wild twists and turns play out. Along with series writer/creator Andy Wolton, the two have found a winning, dependable test for whether or not “Trying” works: Trust the couple at the center.
“Big physical comedy can get very broad if you’re not careful.

Trying's comical second season continues this week on Apple TV+, and TV Fanatic has an exclusive first look.
Jason (Rafe Spall) and Nikki (Esther Smith) continue their journey to adopt on Trying Season 2 Episode 4, set to launch Friday, June 4.
The outing follows them as they go to a school to have an introduction to a potential child named Princess, and they realize straight away that this is not your typical introduction.
They learn they can't really connect with Princess and that it's best for them to act as though they are merely visitors of the school.
Jason and Nikki are understandably thrown for a loop and start to overthink the scenario, thinking about what could bring them to the school in case they are put on the spot.
They agree on surveyors checking how flat the playground is. It's a hilarious scene that also includes them preparing accents.

Genuinely happy couples are some of TV’s greatest magic tricks. So often, people in a contented relationship are used as flat foils for a pair of others caught in a dysfunctional loop. Other times, those couples’ joy is the narrative equivalent of cotton candy, empty calories designed to provide comfort and nothing else.
All of this makes “Trying” feel like that much more of an achievement, not to mention a welcome respite. The Apple TV+ comedy, debuting its Season 2 this week, revolves around Nikki (Esther Smith) and Jason (Rafe Spall), two Camden residents on an extended journey to add to their family. The events of the first season eventually saw them approved by an adoption panel, and now begins the next stretch of the process.
Of course, Nikki and Jason are still not 100 percent certain in their potential parenting skills. In that way — amongst a handful of others — “Trying...

“Trying” was one of those shows that seemed to arrive at just the right time last year. When most folks were stuck inside, looking for a little ray of sunlight, the Apple TV+ comedy was a welcome respite. As the show’s Season 2 trailer hints, it’s back for plenty more a year later.
The show follows Nikki (Esther Smith) and Jason (Rafe Spall), a London couple having difficulty conceiving, who manage to maintain a strong relationship even as their happiness is tested. When they find out that adoption might be the only way for them to raise a child, it starts a roller coaster of high hopes and near misses and living room meetings with their filter-free rep Penny (Imelda Staunton).

[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers from PBS’ movie adaptation of “King Charles III.”]
In “King Charles III,” Charles waited his whole life to be king, but when he finally got his chance, he messed it up royally.
In the PBS Masterpiece movie adapted from Mike Bartlett’s play of the same name, when the Queen dies, Charles (Tim Pigott-Smith) becomes the acting monarch immediately, even though the official coronation won’t take place for three months. During that time, however, he refuses to give his royal assent to a bill that had already passed both houses of Parliament. That refusal divides his government and the nation, inciting riots. Amidst this chaos, Charles’ son William (Oliver Chris) forces him to abdicate, and therefore when coronation day rolls around, it’s William and Kate (Charlotte Riley) who are sitting on the thrones, not Charles.
