The 96th Academy Awards have come and gone, and the night's victor was absolutely "Oppenheimer," Christopher Nolan's epic chronicling the primary developer of the atomic bomb (Cillian Murphy), which won seven Oscars during the ceremony.
It's doubly impressive since 2023 was a dang good year for movies. Surveying the Best Picture nominees, both veteran filmmakers like Martin Scorsese ("Killers of the Flower Moon") and promising new artists such as Celine Song ("Past Lives") stand in its ranks. But really, "Oppenheimer" was the achievement of the year — and yes, without any disrespect to Greta Gerwig or Margot Robbie, I'd even put it ahead of "Barbie," its unofficial "Barbenheimer" double-bill picture.
The triumph of "Oppenheimer" looped back around from feeling inevitable to uncertain to ensured once again. The film opened to rapturous reception, but it was a summer release. Would something come along in the typical Oscar months of autumn to dethrone it?...

Cillian Murphy has won the Oscar for best actor for his turn as J. Robert Oppenheimer, the theoretical physicist and “father of the atomic bomb,” in Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer.”
The admittedly “overwhelmed” actor thanked the Academy, Nolan and executive producer Emma Thomas. “It’s been the wildest, most exhilarating, most creatively satisfying journey you’ve taken me on over the last 20 years, I owe you more than I can say,” he said.
“Thank you so much [to] every single crew member, every single cast member on ‘Oppenheimer,’ you guys carried me through. All my fellow nominees, I remain in awe of you guys. Truly.”
The actor then paused for a personal moment thanking, “My two boys who are sitting up there, I love you so much, and I’m a very proud Irishman standing here tonight.”
Taking a turn for the serious Murphy then dedicated his moment on stage to those fighting for peace.

Mae's character, played by Freya Allan, is set to break the tragic trend of human characters being killed off in the Planet of the Apes movies. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes introduces a new ape protagonist, Noa, on a dangerous journey questioning the ape-human relationship. Keeping Mae alive in future films would benefit the franchise by providing a human character for audiences to relate to and forming a relationship with Noa.
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is the first installment of a new Planet of the Apes movie trilogy, and the upcoming film must use Freya Allan's character to break a tragic trend. Although the Planet of the Apes franchise is about the titular apes, human characters have been integral to the movies since the very beginning, and Matt Reeves' Planet of the Apes trilogy is no exception to that. A catchy nickname for Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer crew has emerged during awards season: the Oppenhomies. During his acceptance speech for best actor at Saturday’s SAG Awards, Cillian Murphy made sure to give credit where it’s due by revealing the specific Oppenhomie who came up with it.
“Just an Fyi on that exquisite moniker, Oppenhomies, that was actually invented by the great Olivia Thirlby,” Murphy said of the actress who plays Lilli Hornig in Nolan’s epic about American scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer and the events surrounding the creation of the atomic bomb. “So Olivia, I think you should immediately trademark that and start merching the shit out of it because someone else will.”
Murphy then got serious by calling his peers “the greatest group of actors I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with.” It’s a long and impressive list, too, that includes Emily Blunt,...

Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt, and others in the Oppenheimer cast went to a bar after walking out of the film's premiere. The SAG-AFTRA strike started only about a week before the film's release, meaning actors could not promote it. Positive reviews, word of mouth, and the Barbenheimer phenomenon ended up making Oppenheimer a big success even without actor promotion.
Oppenheimer stars Cillian Murphy and Emily Blunt reveal where the cast went after walking out of the film's premiere in solidarity with the actors' strike. Directed by Christopher Nolan, the historical drama was released last summer, chronicling the life and career of American theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer. While the film ended up playing remarkably well with audiences, its theatrical rollout experienced a bit of a hiccup in early July when the onset of the SAG-AFTRA strike saw stars like Murphy, Blunt, Robert Downey Jr., and more, walk out of the film's premiere.

Veteran actor Cillian Murphy has left an indelible mark on audiences worldwide, notably through his iconic roles as the brilliant physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer in Oppenheimer. His ability to immerse himself in characters and captivate audiences with his nuanced portrayal is truly remarkable.
However, amidst his illustrious career, there exists a particular moment that stirred a deep sense of unease within the actor.
Cillian Murphy as J. Robert Oppenheimer in Oppenheimer
Murphy, known for his fearless approach to his craft, found himself unnerved during the filming of a pivotal scene in Christopher Nolan’s masterpiece Oppenheimer. In this scene, set within a tiny room, the intensity escalated beyond what had been initially envisioned.
Reflecting on the experience, Murphy revealed that Jason Clarke’s ferocity in that sequence caught him off guard, unsettling him in a way he hadn’t anticipated.

The Everest movie highlights the reality that dead bodies of climbers who die on Mount Everest are often left where they fall. Over 310 people have died climbing Mount Everest and more than 200 bodies remain on the mountain. Retrieval attempts are dangerous and costly, and mountaineering tradition often dictates that bodies remain where they fall.
Contains potentially upsetting content and discussion of death
Baltasar Kormákur's 2015 survival thriller Everest does an effective job of retelling the true story of the 1996 Mount Everest disaster, and in doing so highlights a dark truth about the famous peak. As the movie demonstrates, any expedition to Everest is fraught with danger. However, it's because of the extremes that the mountain represents that some things that would be considered standard procedure on most expeditions are simply unfeasible. One of these reveals the horrifying reality of what climbing Everest really means.

The 1996 Mount Everest Disaster resulted in the deaths of 12 climbers, making it one of the deadliest single seasons in Everest's history. The disaster was caused by a massive blizzard that trapped the climbers near the summit, burying the ropes and making escape nearly impossible. Despite the tragedy, expeditions on Mount Everest have continued to grow, with climbers undeterred by the horrifying stories depicted in the film Everest.
2015's Everest was based on the true-life Mount Everest Disaster of 1996, recreating the overwhelming challenges faced by the real climbers who were trapped on that mountain almost thirty years ago. One of the single deadliest days in the recorded history of the world's tallest peak, the film recounts the expedition taken on by two groups of mountaineers that ended in death for eight climbers, including the two experienced leaders of the expeditions, Rob Hall (Jason Clarke) and Scott Fischer (Jake Gyllenhaal).

“Kill Them All” centers on a hard drinking, former cop who wants his job back and the world’s greatest assassin who wants revenge. They can get both if they fight their way to the top floor of a skyscraper of crime – and if they can “kill them all. It’s like a reverse “Die Hard” except they...

Following The Film Stage’s collective top 50 films of 2023, as part of our year-end coverage, our contributors are sharing their personal top 10 lists.
One of the problems of the award season industrial complex that takes over film discourse in the early months of the year is that it tends to reduce great films to talking points. It also encourages groupthink, even if some of the nominated films are, well, deserving of those nominations. There’s the predictable pattern of acclaim, backlash, backlash to the backlash, and then maybe a few awards and the hopes of a short memory about how the awards campaign went.
Thus, creating a top-ten is always a bit tough. It’s a mixture of subjective and objective critiques, personal preferences mixed with universally regarded favorites. With that, there’s been more than enough written about Killers of the Flower Moon, Oppenheimer, Barbie, The Holdovers, etc. that...

Along with its spellbinding portrayal of a morally complex American figure and harrowing depiction of the meticulous creation of nuclear bombs, Oppenheimer is an exhilarating cinematic showcase that audiences have not experienced in years. The new film by Christopher Nolan is being celebrated for its dense cast of movie stars and sturdy character actors. There is plenty of justified acclaim for the likes of Cillian Murphy as the titular role, Emily Blunt as Kitty Oppenheimer, Robert Downey Jr. as Lewis Strauss, and even Jason Clarke as Roger Robb, but a cast this expansive and eclectic is prone to overshadow dynamic supporting performances, such as the brilliant performance by Dane DeHaan.

Was 2023 a good year for movies? The end of each moviegoing year always raises that age-old question and, as always, the ultimate answer remains squarely in the eye of the beholder. For most, that tends to come down to the most populist theatrical offerings. If the latest superhero sequels and nostalgic remakes and most highly-anticipated blockbusters failed to live up to their crowd-pleasing billing, well, at least there's always next year. But for those of us who spend entirely too much time and effort on the hunt for hidden gems beneath the surface, international cinema from the most exciting talent around the globe, and overlooked indies that didn't have millions of marketing dollars to throw around, that turns out to be the wrong question to ask in the first place.
What we should be talking about is whether we've caught up on all the undeniably great movies readily available to us,...

Deadline’s Read the Screenplay series spotlighting the year’s most talked-about scripts continues with Christopher Nolan’s epic biographical thriller Oppenheimer. Based on American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin, Nolan wrote the script about the titular complicated and brilliant physicist tasked with leading the Manhattan Project, the secret effort to create the atom bomb, and the moral and political struggles that followed.
Oppenheimer the man, as the film tells it, struggled with psychological issues in his youth and grew to become a peerless intellectual though not an entirely likable presence. After the war, he was a vocal opponent of nuclear armament and stripped of his security clearance during a 1954 hearing that focused on his maybe/maybe-not communist ties.

Roger Robb's role as an attorney after the Aec hearing was not as high-profile as expected, with only one notable case involving Barry Goldwater's libel suit against Fact magazine. Robb's career took a significant turn when President Nixon nominated him to become a judge for the United States Court of Appeals, a position he held until his death in 1985. Robb's impact on the legal landscape extended beyond his time as Oppenheimer's attorney, with his successors including notable figures like Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia.

Oppenheimer's success can be attributed to the brilliant acting and tension created by director Christopher Nolan, but the realistic villains in the film play a crucial role in making it work. The secondary villains, played by great actors, bring depth and conflict to Oppenheimer's story, going beyond the simple premise of building an atomic bomb. These villains break up the core conflict between Oppenheimer and Lewis Strauss, adding more challenges and showcasing the difficulties Oppenheimer faced.

Last awards season, “Everything Everywhere All at Once” won almost everything at the 29th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards. Its four victories were for actress Michelle Yeoh, supporting actress Jamie Lee Curtis, supporting actor Ke Huy Quan and best ensemble cast. While the scope of the sweep surprised many, the film’s triumph in the top category was widely expected.
This year, it doesn’t appear likely that any film will match the unprecedented SAG Awards feat achieved by “Everything.” However, I do think that current Gold Derby frontrunner “Oppenheimer” will maintain its lead, and ultimately will win the guild’s prestigious best ensemble prize. Here are five reasons why.
1. It boasts a cast filled with heavyweights.

/Film's Ryan Scott is on the ground at Austin Film Festival, and today attended a panel centered on Max Borenstein, co-creator of the recently-canceled HBO series "Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty." The series, set in 1979-1980 and adapted from the nonfiction book "Showtime" by Jeff Pearlman, offers a behind-the-scenes look at the Los Angeles NBA team and its management during 1980 (when the team was home to legends like Magic Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabar).
While fans may be disappointed about the series being canceled after just two seasons, some of its subjects might feel vindicated. For example, former Lakers coach Jerry West (played by Jason Clarke in "Winning Time") threatened legal action against HBO for his portrayal. The network refused to budge or throw its creators under the bus, citing dramatic license, as "Winning Time" is a dramatization, and providing assurance that the writers had done their homework.

Pet Sematary: Bloodlines expands on the character of Jud Crandall and turns him into a potential villain, explaining his actions in the 2019 film. Editor's Note: The following contains spoilers for Pet Sematary: BloodlinesPet Sematary: Bloodlines, the prequel to the 2019 reboot Pet Sematary starring Jason Clarke and John Lithgow, takes place decades before the 2019 adaptation of Stephen King's classic novel of the same name. Unfortunately, aside from lacking the scares and gore of the novel, it also isn't exactly rooted in anything that the author himself wrote. Instead, this is a brand-new look at how one of the original film's central characters came to learn of the titular "Sematary," and the secrets that the town of Ludlow, Maine has been burying for years. The end result doesn't exactly provide the most exciting prequel ever made, but for fans of King's novel who are dying for one more trip to Ludlow, this movie might scratch that itch.

Warning: Major spoilers for Pet Sematary: Bloodlines below!
Pet Sematary: Bloodlines expands on an important chapter from Stephen King's novel, cautioning against using the burial ground to bring back the dead The prequel reveals that Jud and his family are descendants of Ludlow's founders, who formed a pact to stop the spreading sickness caused by the burial ground. The Wendigo's spirit possesses the dead and do its bidding. The Wendigo's influence on Jud's mind could explain his actions in King's novel and the 2019 film. After witnessing the monsters the "sour" ground brings back, the chipping away of Jud's defenses might have led him to believe using the burial ground for something positive was a good idea.
A key quote from Pet Sematary: Bloodlines might explain a plot hole from Stephen King's original novel and the movie adaptations that followed. While King wasn't keen on 1992 sequel Pet Sematary Two...

The Caine Mutiny is an old classic that has been rewired to fit many different moments. Herman Wouk's novel tells the story of the U.S.S. Caine during an extreme weather event, in which a mutiny was staged against the Commander by the executive officer, resulting in a tense Naval trial concerning the Xo's possible court-martial. The novel became a film (featuring an Oscar-nominated Humphrey Bogart), and then a Broadway play, in which Wouk stripped his text of everything but the court-martial process itself. The result is a tense courtroom drama which asks more questions of the audience than it answers.
That play was turned into a couple of made-for-tv movies, including one directed by the great Robert Altman in 1988, starring Jeff Daniels and Eric Bogosian. Now, Showtime has aired a new version 35 years later, and it's a strange event. This is the final from the acclaimed director William Friedkin,...

Pet Sematary: Bloodlines is the fourth adaptation of Stephen King's novel and attempts to delve deeper into its mythology. The prequel is set in 1969, 50 years before the 2019 remake, and takes creative liberties by alluding to the Vietnam War instead of World War II. The fictionalized version of Ludlow in the movie is inspired by the real town in Maine where King wrote the novel.
Pet Sematary: Bloodlines is the follow-up to the 2019 supernatural horror Pet Sematary which drew inspiration from Stephen King's acclaimed 1983 novel of the same name. With a Fantastic Fest premiere and a streaming release on Paramount+, Pet Sematary: Bloodlines becomes the fourth take on King's novel as it was also preceded by 1989's Pet Sematary (featuring King as screenwriter) and its 1992 sequel Pet Sematary Two. Breathing new life in the source material, the 2019 movie was met with polarizing critics' reviews but still proved to be a box-office success.
