The horror landscape was changing by 1982. People were tiring of slashers; even the Halloween franchise decided to take a left (some would say wrong) turn away from Shatner masks and sharpened knives, and used the brand name to explore the holiday itself in the perpetually under-appreciated Season of The Witch. The genre seemed to be turning towards monsters, from large scale dread fests such as John Carpenter's The Thing to more intimate fare like Frank Henenlotter's Basket Case. The horror films of 1982 displayed a refreshing variety of ways to make audiences jump, squirm, gasp, smile, and when the occasion arose, vomit. The Beast Within giddily checks all the boxes.
Released in February by United Artists, the film took in a total of 7.7 million at the box office. Those were not great numbers, and the reviews were worse. Mainstream critics in general have never been kind to horror; almost...

On Blu-ray and DVD right now via the Scream Factory is 1982's The Beast Within. The film was Tom Holland's first produced feature screenplay, and according to Fango, some of what he wrote couldn’t be filmed for the 1982 release.
“I am now preparing a remake,” he tells them. “Cicadas were a large part of the script I wrote; their 17-year transformation foreshadowed what was happening to Michael. You couldn’t work with insects then, couldn’t capture what I wrote, but CGI now does make that possible.”
He points out, however, that he would not want Michael’s climactic shapeshift into a monster to be done digitally. “Michael’s transformation should still be old-school, done in-camera. The lure of a remake is to finally be able to do what I originally wrote.”
Original Synopsis

Richard Gale: Up until I met Paul Hough, I had never killed anyone before, in a movie or otherwise. Paul Hough: I met Richard on the festival circuit when my film The Angel played at festivals with his amazing short Criticized.

Wow. Just a month in and this regular post dedicated to the - shall we say - more idiosyncratic, less delicate of movies (or shall we just say “gory horrors and not-quite-b-movies”) has the splendid fortune of getting to review Stuart Gordon’s tongue-in-cheek classic, Re-Animator.
Produced by Brian Yuzna, the warped individual behind the brutal class satire/mutant cannibalism jaunt Society, and starring that rubber-faced icon of the midnight movie, Jeffrey Combs, this remains one of the crowning glories of 80s cult film-making. Re-Animator's essentially an outlandish, sillier take on Hp Lovecraft’s spin on the Frankenstein mad-scientist story, and Combs, who you’ll undoubtedly know from such box-office juggernauts as Doctor Mordrid and Cellar Dweller (reviewed here next month), plays brilliant-if-misguided medical student Herbert West.

Though the killer in 2001′s Valentine wears a cherub mask, they are far from angelic. After all, tricking a potential victim into eating chocolates filled with squirming maggots is a pretty devilish thing to do. Regarded as an underseen but worthwhile entry into the slasher genre, Valentine is listed at #46 in The 50 Best Horror Movies You’ve Never Seen, a countdown flick directed by Anthony Masi that hits VOD today.
“The 50 Best Horror Movies You’ve Never Seen focuses on 50 lesser-known horror flicks hailed by critics and genre fans as “absolute must-sees” and are given the spotlight with fun, engaging commentary from journalists, directors, actors and critics in a countdown like no other. Stalkers, monsters, slashers, evil dolls, terrorized babysitters, holiday maniacs, mannequins, eerie motels, even giant rats, they’re all featured.”

The Beast Within is a strange movie, you spend a lot of the time thinking it’s a strange werewolf film and the rest wondering just what the hell the beast is. The fact is though if you take your time and watch it you realise that the so-called Beast is unique, by listening to the commentary and watching the documentary included in this release you realise that the creature is in fact a cicada. I know, I had to look up what it was too.
The Beast Within starts with newlyweds Eli and Caroline MacCleary (Ronny Cox and Bibi Besch) enjoying their honeymoon until their car breaks down on a cold dark country road.

The trailer for The Beast Within, upon its initial release in 1982, warned that the final 30 minutes were so horrific that viewers might not survive to see the end credits roll. Scream Factory has already released the movie on Blu-ray in the Us, but UK residents who survived a viewing of the grim coming-of-age flick, or those who want to check it out for the first time, will be happy to learn that Arrow Films will soon be releasing The Beast Within in a dual Blu-ray and DVD format in the UK:

When I was a kid, there were two movies that terrified me as a kid. This wasn’t the creeping dread I felt when I watched Night of the Living Dead or The Twilight Zone. No, this was outright fear, the kind that sends you under the covers, sleeping in a sheen of sweat with the lights on. And maybe it sounds silly but as someone with a highly overactive imagination who lived in the woods, I don’t find it silly at the time. But now when you’re older, you look back and feel stupid about some of the things that terrified you or the film just isn’t that good. The...

Scream Factory, ever busy preserving horror’s cinematic legacy, recently released another pair of cult classics on Blu-ray, The Beast Within and Crawlspace. Today, we have another double review taking a look back at these two often overlooked genre films.
The Beast Within: The Beast Within is the first theatrical screenplay by now genre vet, Tom Holland (Fright Night, Child’s Play). It follows a sickly 17-year-old named Michael MacCleary (Paul Clemens), who, as it turns out, has the misfortune of being the offspring of a violent encounter between a murderous swamp beast and his mother (Bibi Besch). And as Michael begins awkwardly transitioning into a man on the eve of his 18th birthday, he’s also forced to deal with the terrifying evil growing inside that he must overcome. Because, if he doesn’t face his true nature, Michael may forever be lost to his swamp beast lurking...

Versatile actor best known for her roles in The Sound of Music and Of Human Bondage
In the Hollywood of the 1940s and 50s, when typecasting was an essential constituent of stardom, Eleanor Parker, who has died aged 91, never gained the recognition she deserved, because she refused to be pigeonholed. "It means I've been successful in creating the characters that I've portrayed – that I'm not just a personality who is seen in a variety of roles." Dana Andrews, her co-star in Madison Avenue (1962), called her "the least heralded great actress".
The 1957 film Lizzie is almost a reflection of her career. Parker plays three separate and distinct characters harboured inside one woman – the shy, self-effacing Elizabeth; the wanton, raunchy Lizzie; and the "normal" Beth – and switches brilliantly from one to the other. Parker was always able to be convincing in these three sorts of characters. She was naive as the girl...

She lived a long and storied life as one of Tinseltown’s great actresses, and sadly Eleanor Parker passed away yesterday (December 9) in Palm Springs, California.
The late actress, who was 91 years old, was best known for her supporting actress role in “The Sound of Music,” playing Baroness Schraeder opposite Christopher Plummer.
Additionally, Parker received three Best Actress nominations from the Academy Awards during the course of her career, cementing her place in Hollywood history.
Plummer told the La Times, "Eleanor Parker was and is one of the most beautiful ladies I have ever known. I hardly believe the sad news for I was sure she was enchanted and would live forever."
Eleanor’s son Paul Clemens shared, "[Her part in the Sound of Music] was a lovely role, and she was terrific in it, but it was hardly her greatest role. It was only in the last 10 years of her life that she became glad she had done the film.

She was so versatile, her biography was titled Woman of a Thousand Faces. A lovely, talented actress and a solid leading lady for three decades, Eleanor Parker was best known as the Baroness in The Sound Of Music. I remember her being terrorized by an army of killer ants opposite Charlton Heston in The Naked Jungle (1954), as the crippled wife of junkie Frank Sinatra in The Man With The Golden Arm (1956) and especially climbing out of a hole with her head shaved in the prototype women’s prison film Caged (1950). After her prime, she did a couple of schlocky roles, most notably The Oscar (1966) and Eye Of The Cat (1969) where she pushed Gayle Hunnicut in her wheelchair into traffic. She worked mostly on television in her later years including the classic 1972 TV movie Home For The Holidays in which Walter Brennan, believing his current wife (Julie Harris) is plotting to murder him,...

Can I tell y'all something? I hate the term "hump day." Really, truly, passionately. It doesn't sound sexy, or appealing, it just sounds like a bad time at a middle school dance or what you call a day when your male dog is particularly amorous towards part of your body or an inanimate object. And I hate that every Wednesday I inevitably hear it. It just makes me feel icky. And then makes me feel like I have no sense of humor. That's my little confession for the evening. Here's your Wednesday night TV:
8:00pm: "American Idol" on Fox. Two hour tenth season premiere. The kinder gentler version with Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez debuts. I hope it fails miserably and puts this damn franchise out of it's misery. When was the last time the winner went on to become a legitimate star anyway? I can never keep straight...

If you have Netflix and are a horror fan in need of something to watch this Labor Day weekend, one look at this gargantuan list I compiled of the new terror titles Netflix has added for instant streaming in just the first three days of this month should keep you busy until Labor Day next year. You'll find something for everyone, from older titles to recent releases, famous to obscure, classic to not-so-classic, monsters to maniacs - you name it.
For the record, I considered compiling this list in alphabetical order or by year of the film's release, but then I realized I had already spent well over an hour just sorting through the massive catalogue of titles Netflix has now made available for instant streaming and realized Labor Day would be over by the time I finished arranging this list in any kind of order. Ready? Here you go.

The Alamo Guide
for February 26th, 2010
I’ve got to stop bitching about the weather. Last week I praised February, and then yesterday it snowed. Snowed. Whatevs. I’m over it.We were surprised earlier this week when we found out we’d be getting Roman Polanski’s newest thriller early than expected! The Ghost Writer opens Friday at S. Lamar and has Ewan McGregor’s dreamy face all over it, with Pierce Brosnan trying to kill that dreamy face. I think. I haven’t seen it yet! Cop Out also opens this weekend, and if you love 30 Rock as much as I do, you’ll probably go see it just for Tracy Morgan! Also, the red band trailer makes me giggle A Lot. Speaking of giggling inappropriately, it’s time for the return of Spike And Mike’S Sick And Twisted Festival Of Animation! Longest title ever! Grossest cartoons ever!

Winner of 12 film festival awards, Richard Gale's short film The Horribly Slow Murderer With the Extremely Inefficient Weapon tells the epic story of one man's encounter with what could be the most relentless murderer of all time. Based on an idea for a short comedy sketch, the concept was expanded into a mini-epic... a faux-movie trailer with a 10-minute running time, for a feature film with an alleged running time of over nine hours. Starring Paul Clemens (The Beast Within), Brian Rohan (Criticized), Fay Kato, Melissa Paladino and Mike Kacey. Due to the vast number of locations and sequences, the short film required 22 days of shooting (more shooting days than on his feature film The Proposal!) Accomplished with a small cast and crew, the film takes place all over the world, but was shot entirely in Southern California, and by utilizing a greenscreen set up in the director's living room.

Makeup FX artist Jeffrey S. Farley (pictured) of the Obscure Artifacts company sent along a bunch of behind-the-scenes pics from his assorted recent projects (see them below). The most notable are from Camera Obscura, the on-line horror series from up-and-coming genre filmmaker Drew Daywalt.
Camera Obscura (first row of photos), which we last reported on here, follows a young woman as she continues her deceased grandfather’s battle against creatures from a hellish parallel reality. “My involvement came about through my friendship with Drew,” Farley, who also associate-produced the series, tells Fango. “We’ve had a great time on every show since Breach, and when he sold Camera Obscura, he told me, ‘You’re on, and here are some ideas I’ve come up with.’ Then he produced some of the most incredible Bosch/Bacon-styled designs I’ve ever seen. Needless to say, I was sold.
