Last week, more than 400 TV creators and showrunners — all of them women — sent letters to top executives at Hollywood studios demanding that specific safety protocols be put in place for pregnant employees in states where abortion has been outlawed, or soon will be. Now, letters of support signed by 594 men — including J.J. Abrams, Jordan Peele, Greg Berlanti, Donald Glover, Aaron Sorkin, David E. Kelley, Taika Waititi and Ryan Murphy — have been sent to the same companies.
The text of the letter is short, simply saying the undersigned stand with their “female, trans & non-binary showrunner colleagues in demanding a response from our employers regarding the imminent crisis” at hand. It was delivered by replying-all to the first letter, and was sent to Disney, Netflix, Warner Bros. Discovery, Paramount, Apple, NBC Universal, Amazon, Lionsgate and AMC.
These activist correspondences have been instigated by the Supreme Court’s June 24 Dobbs decison, which overturned Roe v.

Much of the ink printed about Showtime’s prestige series The First Lady has (deservingly) been in reference to its female creative team, whether it be stars Viola Davis, Michelle Pfeiffer and Gillian Anderson, director Susanne Bier or producer Cathy Schulman. But there’s a good story to be told about two men on The First Lady, specifically creator Aaron Cooley and co-star Kiefer Sutherland.
Cooley cut his teeth in entertainment by starting out as an assistant to filmmaker Joel Schumacher in 2002. By that point, the in-demand auteur had already churned out a long list of high-profile Hollywood films including St. Elmo’s Fire, The Lost Boys, Batman Forever, Batman & Robin, A Time to Kill, Flawless and Tigerland, to name a few. But there’s one more feature that’s worthy of mention because it left quite an impression.

Stars hit the red carpet for the world premiere of Showtime’s new series “The First Lady” on Thursday, April 14 at the Director’s Guild of America in Los Angeles. The screening of the pilot episode was followed by a Q&a with star and executive producer Viola Davis, stars Gillian Anderson and Michelle Pfeiffer, director and executive producer Susanne Bier and showrunner and executive producer Cathy Schulman. The panel was moderated by Jazz Tangcay, senior editor at Variety.
Starring Davis as Michelle Obama, Pfeiffer as Betty Ford and Anderson as Eleanor Roosevelt, this series delves deep into the Ladies’ personal and political lives. Exploring everything from their journeys to Washington, family life, and world-changing political contributions, the impact of the White House’s women is no longer hidden from view.

As Chicago lawyer Michelle Obama becomes First Lady Michelle Obama in Showtime’s newest drama, her predecessor Laura Bush offers some words of advice and comfort. “You may think you have nothing in common with the First Ladies before you,” Laura tells her, “[but] trust me when I say we all felt that way.” Here, Laura Bush acts as both some benign voice of reason (an odd choice) and also as a mouthpiece for “The First Lady” writ large (odder), which tackles the stories of three First Ladies who share little beyond the fact of living in the White House.
There’s Michelle, played by Viola Davis with Obama’s familiar cadence (if also some very exaggerated stenciled half-moon eyebrows). In the timeline that comes closest to working is Betty Ford, embodied by an especially sharp Michelle Pfeiffer. Viola Davis, Gillian Anderson and Michelle Pfeiffer take on three former First Ladies in Showtime “The First Lady” series, which premieres April 17. But the pressure was most intense for Davis in assuming the role of Michelle Obama, who is very much alive and whose four years in the White House were far more well-documented than the lives of Eleanor Roosevelt (who’s played by Anderson) and Betty Ford (Pfeiffer).
During a TCA Panel on Wednesday, Davis admitted that – even though she had previously met Michelle Obama and received her blessing – approaching this role was more daunting than any other she’s played so far.
“It’s so specific and I had the insurmountable task [because] everyone knows who Michelle Obama is, everybody has claimed ownership of her. There is nothing about her that they want desecrated. A lot of times, when you approach a character, you want their mess, but with Michelle Obama…...

Viola Davis stars in Showtime’s The First Lady in the role of Michelle Obama, and she admits she’s nervous about what the former First Lady will think of her performance. The anthology drama is set to premiere on April 17.
“Let me tell you something, not only does the thought [of Michelle Obama watching the show] come to mind, it keeps me up at night,” Davis said during the show’s Ctam panel on Wednesday.
“You don’t want to insult them by your portrayal… As much as we feel like we know Michelle Obama—and I did everything I could to research—there are those private moments where there’s some level of creative decision-making that you have to take. I don’t know how she lays in bed with Barack or how she disciplines her children. There are small minutiae that I can just take creative license with and hope that I’m not insulting her with it.
