A federal judge has dismissed a lawsuit from the Walt Disney Co. against Ron DeSantis that may decide the entertainment giant’s authority to control development around its sprawling theme park.
U.S. District Judge Allen Winsor, in an order issued on Wednesday, found Disney “lacks standing to sue the governor” and DeSantis’ handpicked board that now controls the district in which the company’s park operates. He concluded that the statute reshaping the leadership structure and granting the governor the authority to appoint every member of the tax district’s governing body is “facially constitutional” and cannot be challenged with a free speech claim.
In a statement, a Disney spokesperson said, “This is an important case with serious implications for the rule of law, and it will not end here.” He added, “If left unchallenged, this would set a dangerous precedent and give license to states to weaponize their...

The glory-obsessed, wild-eyed Klingon character of Gowron (Robert O'Reilly) was first introduced in the "Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "Reunion", in which the leadership of the Klingon High Council was in a state of flux. It seemed that the old Chancellor K'mpec (Charles Cooper) was being slowly poisoned, and one of two men was set to take his place. There was the dishonorable Duras (Patrick Massett) or the mysterious Gowron. Ultimately, Worf (Michael Dorn) killed Duras in a fit of rage after Duras murdered Worf's mate K'Ehlyr (Suzie Plakson), leaving Gowron in charge. Gowron would sit at the head of the Klingon High Council as Chancellor until the events of the "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" episode "Tacking Into the Wind", when Worf would slay him as well.
Gowron has always been a fan favorite, as Robert O'Reilly's performance was often enjoyably over-the-top. Grit your teeth and growl the phrase "Gloohry to yooooou,...

Ron DeSantis’s attorneys say that The Walt Disney Co. lacks standing to sue him in the company’s federal lawsuit over the Florida governor’s moves to strip the company of control of a special district that covers its Orlando theme parks.
DeSantis’s legal team also contends that the governor has sovereign and legislative immunity from the litigation, in which the company claims that its First Amendment and other constitutional rights were violated by the governor’s actions. Disney claims that the DeSantis-led effort to install his own appointees to the special district was in retaliation for the company’s opposition last year to a parental rights law, which detractors call the “don’t say gay” bill.

Bradley Cooper has been admired by fans since he first popped up on TV during an episode of "Sex and the City" in 1999, and he's continued to steal hearts over the years as both a great actor and a person who uses his platform to give back to those in need. His most important role to date, however, came in March 2017 when he and ex Irina Shayk welcomed their daughter, Lea De Seine.
At the time of her birth, Cooper and Shayk had been romantically linked for two years. In June 2019, the pair split after four years of dating, but Cooper and Shayk remain dedicated to parenting Lea together. "Their coparenting routine and schedule is going smoothly and they have respect for each other," a source told Entertainment Tonight in January 2021. Update: Attorneys for Florida Governor Ron DeSantis claimed that he is immune from The Walt Disney Co.’s federal lawsuit over his effort to strip to the company of control over a special district covering its theme parks and resort in the state.
In a motion to dismiss filed on Monday, attorneys for the state also argued that the federal district court lacks jurisdiction.
“Although Disney grabbed headlines by suing the Governor, Disney — like many litigants before it who have challenged Florida’s laws — has no basis for doing so. Neither the Governor nor the Secretary [of the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity] enforce any of the laws at issue, so Disney lacks standing to sue them,” the attorneys wrote in their motion (read it here).
The state’s attorneys also called the Disney lawsuit “meritless for many reasons,” including that “a special district cannot bind the State to transfer a portion of its sovereign authority to a private entity.

For one night only, the stars turned out on Broadway last night to stage a reading of 8, the new dramatization — directed by Joe Mantello and penned by Dustin Lance Black, the Oscar-winning screenwriter of Milk — of Perry vs. Schwarzenegger, the landmark 2010 trial that led the Federal Court to rule Proposition 8 unconstitutional. To say that the night’s cast was star-studded is an understatement; performers included Morgan Freeman, Rob Reiner, John Lithgow, Bradley Whitford, Ellen Barkin, Cheyenne Jackson, Matt Bomer, and Christine Lahti, among many other big names.

New York -- A play based on last year's federal court fight over California's gay marriage ban made its Broadway debut on Monday night with an all-star cast, only hours after a federal judge decided to unseal the trial's video recordings.
Screenwriter Dustin Lance Black's play "8" was born, in part, by frustration that Proposition 8 backers had succeeded in getting the U.S. Supreme Court to bar broadcast of the landmark case.
During the trial, former U.S. Solicitor General Theodore Olson and attorney David Boies – best known as adversaries who represented opposing sides in the disputed 2000 presidential election – put on a powerfully clear argument in favor of gay marriage. Prop. 8 was eventually ruled unconstitutional in August 2010. The case is under appeal.
Black, a member of the American Foundation for Equal Rights, wrote his play using the trial transcript, firsthand observations of the courtroom drama and interviews with the plaintiffs and their families.
