Television was a nascent medium in 1949 when Bill Hayes made his debut on “Fireball Fun-For-All,” a zany comedy-variety series fronted by vaudeville comedians Ole Olsen and Chick Johnson.
The series only lasted three months, but that was long enough to set Hayes on the path to become a TV legend through his role as Doug Williams, a pillar of the venerable daytime series “Days of Our Lives” for more than five decades. Hayes, who died Jan. 12 at the age of 98, never forgot the invaluable training he learned from working in the early days of live TV.
“The cameras were huge and immovable back then,” Hayes told Variety in 2018 when he and Susan Seaforth Hayes, his wife of 49 years and longtime “Days” leading lady, were awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Daytime Emmy Awards. “They didn’t have the capability of zooming in or out. It was all live until...

“Days of Our Lives” premiered on November 8, 1965 on NBC. Created by Ted Corday and Betty Corday, the daytime drama follows the lives, loves, careers and crises of the citizens of Salem. And though it was part of an NBC family of soaps over the years that included “Another World,” “The Doctors,” “Generations,” “Santa Barbara” and “Sunset Beach,” it has been all alone on the NBC lineup ever since “Passions” was cancelled by the network in 2007.
The series has proven resilient, weathering myriad changes in the television landscape over more than half a century on the airwaves. So we asked our readers who they’ve loved the most on the soap and why. Scroll down to see who they picked, and let us know who would be on your list of “Days” faves, past or present.

The entire cast of NBC’s daytime drama Days of Our Lives are been released from their contracts, Deadline has confirmed.
As first reported by TVLine, the soap will go an indefinite hiatus at the end of the month. The cost-cutting move comes during the usual renewal window between NBC and Days distributor Sony Pictures TV; a renewal for Days typically comes at the start of the year. According to sources, negotiations for another season of the show on NBC are currently underway.
The decision to release the cast came from Corday Productions, the production entity on the series created by Ted Corday and Betty Corday. With daytime drama ratings continue to slide, and the current season (through end of summer) of Days already in the can, the company is limiting its exposure in case the series is not renewed for another season while also employing a possible negotiating tactic with the cast.

Corday Productions filed a breach of contract and fraud complaint filed this morning accusing Sony Pictures Television, as well as its Columbia Pictures and Screen Gems divisions, of deliberating hanging Days of our Lives out to dry in international distribution markets to the advantage of their 100% owned The Young and the Restless. Corday and Sony jointly own Days.
The Corday action also alleges that Sony "treachery" has led to the majority of Days' back seasons left "completely unexploited for over five years" in an attempt to starve off the soap and pump Y&R.
"While the domestic ratings for Days of our Lives have remained largely constant, Sony’s distribution receipts have decreased by over 50%," the 33-page complaint asserts as it seeks of damages of over $20 million and significantly taking back control of the show. "This dramatic decline is directly attributable to a decision at the highest levels of Sony management...

Joseph Mascolo lost his battle with Alzheimer's Disease Wednesday at the age of 87.
Mascolo was best known for his long and passionate role as villain Stefano Dimera on Days of Our Lives.
Mascolo began playing Dimera on Days in 1982 and terrorized the citizens of Salem on and off for the next 34 years.
Although Mascolo took time away from Days for arcs on shows like Bold and the Beautiful from 2001-2006, for example, it was always to Days of Our Lives that he returned and with Stefano that he was the most associated.
The character was one of the most prolific and long-lasting villains of all time, never losing his evil touch.
But Mascolo had a career long before soaps, and it's fun to catch him elsewhere, such as on an episode of Hart to Hart which airs in repeats frequently on Hallmark Movies & Mysteries.

Ken Corday is true Daytime TV royalty, carrying on a soap opera lineage that has lasted for 45 years. Ken's father, Ted Corday, produced The Guiding Light and As the World Turns through the '50s and '60s before being commissioned by NBC to create a show of his own. The serial he created has become the second longest running show in daytime history—The Days of Our Lives.
Corday was only with the show a brief time when he was diagnosed with cancer. After his death in 1987, his wife, Betty, took over producing responsibilities. Betty reigned on the Days set for over twenty years before turning over control to her son Ken. He has not only continued the producing legacy with great results, he also has contributed an award winning score as the series' composer.

The world is no longer turning. At least that's how it feels for the countless fans of 'As the World Turns.'
The historic soap opera ends its 54-year run today. Legendary serial queen Irna Phillips created the ground-breaking drama, which debuted on April 2, 1956, on CBS. As times changed, so did the show, but the family unit was always at the core of the beloved series.
"'Atwt' was a trailblazer," reflected Emmy-winning writer-producer Jonathan Reiner, who spent seven years at Soap Opera Weekly. "It was one of the first half-hour shows and used hallmarks and techniques that the genre became famous for, such as the lingering close-up, exposition over coffee, a greater depth of character so that we knew motivations. This was all thanks to Irna Phillips, writer Bill Bell and director Ted Corday."
