A hit song from the 1980s had lyrics similar to The Beatles‘ “Blackbird.” One of the writers of the 1980s song said he was upset by the similarity. In addition, he said The Beatles’ song might be based on a book by a famous author.
The Beatles | Keystone Features / Stringer The accidental similarity between The Beatles’ ‘Blackbird’ and Mr. Misters’ ‘Broken Wings’
Richard Page is a member of the band Mr. Mister, most known for the song “Broken Wings” and “Kyrie.” During a 2010 interview with Smashing Interviews Magazine, he named some of his influences. “The Beatles, The Beach Boys, Stevie Wonder, Steely Dan, Herbie Hancock, Miles Davis, Chick Corea, and Keith Jarrett,” he said.
Both Mr. Mister’s “Broken Wings” and The Beatles’ “Blackbird” include the phrase “Take these broken wings and learn to fly.” Page was asked if this was an intentional reference on the part of Mr. Mister.

Legendary jazz musician Chick Corea died in February 2021 at age 79, a month before that year’s Grammys were held. He won both of his nominations at that event, though voting ended before his death so the awards weren’t influenced by that. This year he received four more nominations posthumously, and he ended up winning two of them. That gives the late artist a total of 27 awards in his career, which ties him for fourth place on the list of the all-time biggest winners in Grammy history. Check out the gallery above for the other artists who have won the most awards in history.
This year Corea won Best Improvised Jazz Solo for “Humpty Dumpty (Set 2)” and Best Latin Jazz Album for “Mirror Mirror.” He was also nominated for Best Jazz Instrumental Album for “Akoustic Band Live,” but that award went to “Skyline” by Ron Carter, Jack DeJohnette, and Gonzalo Rubalcaba.

Meanwhile, Doja Cat and Sza won best pop duo/group performance for their song "Kiss Me More," and Olivia Rodrigo won three awards, including best new artist. Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett also won best traditional pop vocal album for their album "Love For Sale."

The Foo Fighters are nominated for three Grammys at the awards that will be held on Sunday night, April 3. Tragically, these are the last nominations for the band’s drummer Taylor Hawkins, who died suddenly on March 25 at age 50. The group have been Recording Academy favorites for decades, so they’re a good chance they’ll be awarded again. In fact, our odds say they’ll win two out of the three.

Most years, the biggest winner at the Grammys tends to pick up anywhere from three to six awards, with some legendary artists having won a couple more than that. For instance, last year’s biggest champ was Beyonce with four trophies. The year before that Finneas led with six. The all-time record is held by Michael Jackson and Santana, who won eight apiece in 1984 and 2000, respectively. As such, the question remains for this year: who will bring home the most Grammys in 2022? Let’s consider four possibilities

With a new Grammy ceremony coming on January 31, a few records are poised to be broken. Here are four artists looking to make a splash and cement themselves even more in Grammy history than they already are.
SEE2022 Grammy predictions: R&b album races include tough match-up between H.E.R., Jon Batiste, and Jazmine Sullivan Tony Bennett
This pop standards legend has a couple of records he could break due to his multiple nominations for his Lady Gaga collaboration album, “Love For Sale.” If Bennett wins any category come January, he will become the second oldest person to ever win a Grammy, at 95 years and 181 days. The current record is held by Pinetop Perkins, who won nearing 98-years-old. Furthermore, if Bennett wins one (or both) of his general field nominations, he will be the oldest person ever to win a general field award. He’s already the oldest person ever to be nominated in those categories.

In a different field, Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea could have been rivals. Born just a year apart, the pianists both hit the New York jazz scene in the early Sixties, and by the end of the decade, they’d grown into two of the genre’s brightest young talents — and two of the musicians best equipped to lead the way into the plugged-in fusion era. But even after Corea replaced Hancock in Miles Davis’ live band in 1968, the pair developed a close working relationship — and equally strong friendship — that...

In September of 2008, an unusual performance took place at downtown New York club Le Poisson Rouge. At stage right, opposite fellow six-string adventurer Marc Ribot, sat Lou Reed, conjuring clouds of free-rock energy from his guitar. Behind them, avant-garde mainstay John Zorn sent forth piercing, impassioned blasts of alto sax. And at the center of it all, churning with the fury of a whirlpool and dancing across his hand-painted drum kit with the control and flair of a flamenco master, was Milford Graves — the percussionist, healer, and interdisciplinary seeker who...

Chick Corea died on February 9, 2021, due to “a rare form of cancer which was only discovered very recently,” as was announced on social media. He was 79-years-old, and leaves behind a legacy as a pioneer of jazz fusion, but his musical output never stopped — from his earlier career working with Miles Davis all the way to his 2020 double album “Plays.” He’s one of the biggest winners in the history of the Grammys, and he could actually increase that total this year, albeit posthumously.
His first recognition from the recording academy came in 1974 with a pair of nominations: Best Instrumental Arrangement (“Spain”) and Best Jazz Performance by a Group (“Light as a Feather” with his band Return to Forever). He didn’t win those prizes, but that’s okay. Over the next 46 years he accumulated 23 Grammys out of a total 67 nominations. That places him eighth on the list of the all-time biggest winners.

As Chick Corea witnessed for himself again and again, including on the British music series The Old Grey Whistle Test in 1976, the strangest thing happened in pop during the Seventies. Music fans would buy tickets to arena or amphitheater shows by bands like Return to Forever — founded and fronted by the late jazz keyboardist, who died of an unspecified type of cancer on February 9th at 79. Then they would settle into their seats and watch, and attentively listen, as the musicians would play an hour or two of entirely instrumental music.

By 1982, Roy Haynes had been playing drums professionally for close to 40 years. That December, during a concert at the White House with pianist Chick Corea and bassist Miroslav Vitous, he showed that he was still operating on the cutting edge of jazz.
Instead of playing it safe and running through a couple familiar tunes, the group presented an unusual medley, based on a concept documented on its then-recent Ecm album Trio Music. That LP featured a novel structure: half searching free improvisations, half swinging renditions of pieces by Thelonious Monk.

It had been a while since Lovato had performed publicly. Over the years she has struggled with depression and substance abuse, and in 2018 she relapsed and almost died due to a drug overdose. ‘Saint’ be praised! Sara Bareilles finally won a Grammy on a night of redemption for overdue artists
She did it! Sara Bareilles finally won a Grammy on her eighth nomination in 11 years. On Sunday afternoon she claimed Best American Roots Performance for her song “Saint Honesty” from her latest album “Amidst the Chaos” (listen to it above). It was her first nomination in the American Roots field, and it was her only nomination this year, but it was enough to finally end her losing streak after more than a decade.

In 2017, when Rolling Stone counted down the top 100 metal albums of all time, Human, a 1991 LP by Florida outfit Death, landed at number 70. Death are widely credited with helping to launch the death-metal subgenre with their grisly, unrelenting 1987 debut Scream Bloody Gore, but by 1991, bandleader Chuck Schuldiner had more on his mind than raw extremity. Human’s opening seconds made that clear: The album’s first track, “Flattening of Emotions,” starts with a mind-bending drum intro, layering supple tom-tom rolls over pounding double bass, that sounds like a tribal riff...

When Tal Wilkenfeld finished recording her album Love Remains in late 2015, the first person she sent it to was Pete Townshend. “Pete was very encouraging of the music,” Wilkenfeld says. “The compositions, the production, the whole thing. Very smart too, in terms of the advice that he gave me from the business front.”
This type of interaction isn’t unusual for Wilkenfeld, a bass virtuoso who, ever since scoring a gig as Chick Corea’s bassist in 2007, has spent the bulk of her career playing with veteran rock musicians like Jeff Beck,...

Earth Wind & Fire’s Philip Bailey honors one of his greatest falsetto influences, Curtis Mayfield, with a cover of “Billy Jack” set to appear on his upcoming solo album, Love Will Find a Way, out June 21st via Verve Records.
Bailey puts a dark soul spin on “Billy Jack,” transforming the reggae-tinged original into a brooding groover that mixes West African influences with orchestral flourishes and even takes a turn towards the psychedelic. Bailey imbues his falsetto with a potent mix of tenderness and pain as he croons the murder ballad,...

Twenty-nine years ago, Yes lead singer Jon Anderson abandoned a half-finished solo album called Uzlot that he’d been been recording in Big Bear, California, with his bandmates Chris Squire and Alan White. Yes were gearing up for a massive reunion tour and he simply put the master tapes in his garage and gave them very little thought as the years started racing by. But just a couple of years ago, producer Michael Franklin reached out to Anderson to see if he’d let him take the tapes and finish the album.

Among the nominees at the 2019 Grammy Awards were a few who already stood among the biggest winners of all time. So where does that list stand now that their categories have been decided? Three superstars just climbed higher in the Grammy record books: Quincy Jones, Beyonce and Jay-z.
Jones is one of the most legendary producers and musicians in the history of the recording industry, and his victory this year for Best Music Film for the self-titled Netflix documentary about his life and career gives him a total of 28 prizes. That breaks his tie with Alison Krauss as the second most awarded individual in Grammy history. He now stands alone as the single most awarded artist currently living. The only person who ever won more was all-time record-holder Georg Solti, a classical conductor who prevailed 31 times and died in 1997.

Now in its 43rd year, the Clive Davis Pre-Grammy Gala is famously the music industry’s hottest ticket, an invite-only affair held the night before the Grammy Awards and loaded with the kind of A-list guest list that only Davis could assemble. Organized by Davis with his son, attorney Doug Davis, it’s legendary as a platform for exclusive superstar performances — over the past few years we’ve seen everyone from Mary J. Blige to Barry Manilow sing — and also a rite of passage for younger artists ranging from Chance the Rapper to Alicia Keys. At last year’s event, Jay-z was the honoree (and was feted with a solo medley of his hits delivered by Keys) and Davis announced that Jennifer Hudson had signed on to star in a forthcoming biopic on Aretha Franklin. Hudson then delivered a medley of Franklin’s hits before the singer herself, who was...

Daniel Rosenfeld’s “Piazzolla, the Years of the Shark,” a biographical documentary about tango musician Astor Piazzolla, world premieres at the Intl. Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (Idfa). Rosenfeld talked with Variety about Piazzolla’s legacy, the revelations within the film and his interesting exhibition strategy.
Piazzolla is, along with Carlos Gardel, the most notable tango musician of the 20th century. The film features a previously unreleased collection of interviews with the artist himself, recorded before his death in 1992. The film uses those tapes, video of classic performances and the extensive memorabilia collection of Piazzolla’s son, Daniel, to tell the story of the international superstar.
The film is an Argentine-French co-production between Rosenfeld – an equally accomplished producer and director – and France’s Françoise Gazio from Idéale Audience. Euroarts is handling sales.

[Editor’s Note: Our own Scott Drebit hosted panels last weekend at the sixth annual Calgary Horror Con. At the three-day event, Scott caught up with Ari Lehman, the first actor to ever play Jason Voorhees, to discuss his years in the ’80s New York City music scene, performing onstage in Africa, and singing and playing the keytar in his punk rock/heavy metal band First Jason.]
Congratulations on melting everyone’s faces off Friday night with your solo performance as First Jason.
Ari Lehman: Thank you! That’s why we’re there, to melt faces, to melt brains. That’s kind of you to say. I love playing First Jason’s songs on the electric keytar; it has a certain kind of sound, it’s very loud. But usually I have the emotional and musical support of my bandmates; my drummer, whose name ironically is Bass Amp, and our guitarist, Eddie Machete—they give me so much support, and it just makes me feel great having them there. So I felt that it came off well; but it was an adjustment. The audience was so receptive and it was a great experience for me, too, playing that way.
I was there with my niece, and I knew of the band, but I assumed it was just you.
