As Hollywood events return to full force in New York and Los Angeles amid the coronavirus pandemic, here’s a look at the week’s biggest premieres, parties and openings, including red carpets for The Dropout, The Godfather‘s 50th anniversary and season five of Better Things.
The Godfather 50th Anniversary
“A couple of times I thought I was finished,” Francis Ford Coppola told The Hollywood Reporter on Tuesday night of the ongoing fear he was about to be fired while filming an adaptation of Mario Puzo’s Mafia novel The Godfather. Needless to say, he kept the gig, won three Oscars including best picture and launched a franchise that has become one of the most iconic in history. Coppola returned to the Paramount lot this week to honor the 1972 film’s milestone 50th anniversary, a celebration that included a dedication of Francis Ford Coppola Avenue on the studio lot...

With both title and central buddy dynamic tipping hat to “Superbad,” among other raunchy teen comedies, “Supercool” is not the kind of movie that wins prizes for originality. Nor is Finnish director Teppo Airaksinen’s first U.S.-shot, English-language project as outrageous as it thinks it is. Nonetheless, this energetic spin through high school antics redolent of everything since “Ferris Bueller” is colorful and amusing enough to entertain viewers looking for a familiar mix of bad-taste gags in a squeaky-clean suburban setting. Vertical Entertainment is releasing it to 20 U.S. theater screens as well as on-demand platforms Feb. 11.

In the fifth episode of the new season of FX’s wonderful Better Things, three generations of the Fox family — mom Sam (creator-star Pamela Adlon), grandmother Phil (Celia Imrie), and daughter Frankie (Hannah Alligood) — are enjoying a late-night snack and talking about which part of the family Sam inherited her chronic hand pain from. Frankie interjects, “If I ever get the impulse to just strike up conversation with complete strangers everywhere I go, I will 100 percent hold it against you, Sam.”

Hey, "Hawaii Five-0" fans. It is that time again to let you guys know what crazy action and adventure the Five-0 crew will have in the next, new episode 6 of this current season 10. Thanks to the fantastic folks over at CBS, we do have a couple of teaser descriptions for this 6th installment. So, we're just going to go ahead and run those by you guys right now. For starters, episode 6 does indeed have an official title. The producers decided to name it, "A‘ohe pau ka ‘ike I ka h?lau ho’okahi.” The English translation for that is, "All knowledge is not learned in just one school.” So, the producers managed to pull of yet another very long title. It sounds like episode 6 will feature some very intense, dramatic, action-filled, comical and interesting scenes as the Five-0 investigates a driverless drug car! Tani and Quinn have to deal...

It’s been 15 months since we’ve had a new episode of Better Things, but the wait is over is a couple of weeks. As fans await for the Season 3 premiere of Pamela Adlon’s comedy February 28, FX has released a first-look featurette. Check it out above.
Adlon, who’s been Emmy-nominated for Lead Actress in a Comedy for each of the show’s first two seasons, notes that the new episodes will see “other worlds that [her character Sam Fox] inhabits since she’s able to get out and let her hair down a little bit more. And then the pressures start to build again.”
We also hear from the young but “getting older” co-stars who play Sam’s vastly different daughters — Mikey Madison (Max), Hannah Alligood (Frankie) and Olivia Edward (Duke) — along with Celia Imrie, who plays their offbeat and unpredictable Brit expat grandma, Phyllis.

This much we know about the romantic messiness on NBC’s Community (Thursdays at 8/7c): Joel McHale‘s Jeff famously slept with Britta (during last season’s spectacular bit of paintball warfare), but also made out with Annie.

And despite her protestations otherwise, that was not necessarily a heat-of-the-moment piece of acting.
