Today being international jazz day, there will be much celebrating of the greatness of its history. I’ve done that in the past; it is a great history. But it is not all back in historical times; jazz lives, and evolves, and continues to be great. Yet how many lists of the greatest jazz albums include anything from the current century?
That they do not is no indictment of them; only sixteen percent of the years when recorded jazz has existed (not counting the present year yet) are in the twenty-first century, after all, and some prefer to bestow the label of greatness after more perspective has been achieved than sixteen (or fewer, for newer releases) years.
Nonetheless, if people are to respect jazz as a living art form, a look back at the best of its more recent releases seems worthwhile. Here’s one man’s “baker’s dozen...

It’s one of the more complicated scenes to capture in the new Clive Barker film Dread. Actors Jackson (Twilight) Rathbone and Hanne Steen must play slightly drunk while getting hot and heavy during a romantic date in the countryside. At one point, they climb onto the hood of their car and release back into the wild a once-injured crow Rathbone’s character has rescued. Except the crow isn’t playing ball.
Director of photography Sam McCurdy (of the Descent duo) is perched on a crane, ready to move upward with the bird as it hopefully flies toward the camera. The crow wrangler has assured everyone this will happen. But it persistently doesn’t, and continually resetting the shot is getting very time-consuming and patience-testing—especially as writer/director Anthony Diblasi only has 28 days to shoot this adaptation of Barker’s acclaimed Books Of Blood short story during a cold November.

As we told you just a couple of days ago (previous story here), a number of television networks have been vying for Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton's pilot script for "Clive Barker's Hotel." It now appears that ABC has emerged on top of the fray.
According to THR McG's Wonderland Sound and Vision banner is in talks to produce the Warner Bros TV project for the network along with Barker and Joe Daley. Wonderland and Wbtv have collaborated on another series with genre overtones, the CW hit "Supernatural." In an interesting development, McG (pictured) could come on board in a directorial capacity if the project moves forward.
No further details were revealed about plot or characters and casting other than what we already knew: The series will center on "a series of ghoulish incidents at a haunted hotel." Hopefully we'll be learning more sooner rather than later.

New York -- ABC has picked up the script "Clive Barker's Hotel" from "Saw" scribes Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton. The network bested Fox and several other nets eyeing the Warner Bros. TV project.
The script centers on a series of ghoulish incidents at a haunted hotel.
Horror maven Barker is attached as a producer, and McG's Wonderland Sound and Vision banner is in talks to produce. Joe Daley is co-producing. It's possible McG could come on board in a directorial capacity if the project moves forward, though the idea hasn't yet moved beyond the conversation stage.
Dunstan and Melton, repped by Apa and Underground Management, were discovered when they won a season of "Project Greenlight" with their horror script "Feast," which became a Dimension pic. They went on to write "Saw IV" and "Saw V" and penned the screenplay to this fall's "Saw VI."

Horror baron Clive Barker, who first introduced the world to "Hellraiser" has a new project set up for television, and two up-and-coming writers from the "Saw" series will be paving the way. "Clive Barker's Hotel" still has a veil of secrecy around its premise, but the writer behind "The Midnight Meat Train" worked with Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton previously when they penned a draft for Dimension's (now held) "Hellraiser" remake. This time, it looks as though they have sold their idea to Warner Bros.
Warner Bros. Television purchased "Hotel," according to the Risky Biz blog. Barker is reportedly attached to produce the potential TV series about a haunted hotel with Barker's other previous collaborator Joe Daley. McG's Wonderland Sound and Vision, which produced "Supernatural" for The CW, may also be interested in producing the property.

When Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton ( The Collector , Saw 4-7) were hired to pen a now-abandoned remake of Clive Barker's Hellraiser , the pair forged a relationship with the author that would pay off down the road. THR's Risky Business Blog reports that Dunstan and Melton have sold a pitch to Warner Bros. called Clive Barker's Hotel . The idea is to groom it into a television series with Barker producer along with Seraphim Films' Joe Daley and McG's Wonderland Sound and Vision ( Supernatural ). Plot details are under wraps, however, the thrust of the series is set at a haunted hotel. Warner Bros. Television is now shopping it to a number of networks.
