A new generation has discovered the joys of wintry, isolation-fueled ballads, but Greg Brown has been wallowing in them for four decades. With songs that straddle folk and country and resist outsized hooks in favor of gaunt, gently rippling chord changes, the Iowa-based troubadour, who’s released over two dozen records, has been a cult figure for a reason. He’s only approached a degree of mainstream exposure here and there (appearances on Prairie Home Companion and taking on the voice of Hades on Anaïs Mitchell’s original Hadestown album). But along the way,...

Anyone who knows me knows that if a movie stars a professional wrestler, I’m immediately happy as a film fan. Yeah, I’m probably easily impressed, but still, whenever I see my favorite WWE (or otherwise) superstars make the leap to the world of feature films, it makes my inner child giddy. As a kid, it was the reason I first rented They Live, it was the reason I begged my mom mercilessly to see No Holds Barred in theaters, and when I learned in late 1986 that Jesse “The Body” Ventura was going to be co-starring in Predator, the next summer could not get here fast enough.
Even as an adult, I’m always a big fan of seeing wrestlers transition to movies, and that has a lot to do with my soft spot for Gregory Dark’s See No Evil. It features Glenn Jacobs (also known as “Kane...

In 2006, WWE Studios released “See No Evil,” a horror film directed by music video veteran Gregory Dark. It starred Kane as psychotic serial killer Jacob Goodnight, whose mommy issues and strict religious upbringing led him to descend further into madness. In that film, he offed teenager after teenager in the hotel that his family owned. It was gritty, dark, gruesome and bloody and earned somewhat of a cult following on home video. It had its flaws, such as a muddled story, but also featured some incredibly unique and original kills.
As much effort as WWE put into promoting the film, it allowed it to fade into history, failing to recognize that the horror genre was hurting for a new iconic slasher. Hatchet, created and directed by Adam Green, satisfied fans’ appetites but there was still that desire for a fresh new character to emerge and take the genre by storm.

Lionsgate and WWE Studios have agreed to co-produce six new films together, according to Deadline. The deal will begin with Vendetta, an original story to be directed by the Soska sisters and set to star Paul White, aka WWE wrestler The Big Show. The companies are continuing a partnership that began back in 2006 with horror outing See No Evil. A sequel, See No Evil 2, has already been completed with Jen and Sylvia Soska, makers of cult indie horror Dead Hooker in a Trunk and American Mary, taking over from Gregory Dark in the director's chair. Due for release later this year, the sequel will see WWE's Kane returning to his role as murderous psychopath Jacob Goodnight as he hunts down a group of...

A smattering of new cast members have joined the Soska Sisters directed slasher sequel 'See No Evil 2'. Whilst the murderous Jacob Goodnight (played once more by WWE's Kane) says good morning and rises from the dead in this follow-up to Gregory Dark's original 'See No Evil' a foursome of new victims have been tagged onto the potential 'dead meat' list that includes actors Greyston Holt ('Bitten'), Chelan Simmons -below ('Tucker and Dale vs Evil'), Kaj Eriksen, and Lee Majdoub. The four will join the already cast Danielle Harris ('Among Friends'), Katharine Isabelle ('American Mary') and Michael Eklund ('The Divide'). Production kicks of this Autumn/Fall time....

It's been 7 years since the Gregory Dark helmed slasher 'See No Evil' so any expectations of a sequel particularly following its less than impressive response was as low as low could be. However, you can't keep a potential franchise down when it comes to horror and 'See No Evil 2' is in the works. WWE and Lionsgate have reteamed once more for the follow-up and hired the Soska sisters for directorial duties. Jen and Sylvia Soska, responsible for other genre efforts 'Dead Hooker in a Trunk' and 'American Mary', will helm the sequel and kick off producton this Autumn/Fall. 'See No Evil' starred WWE wrestler Kane but no word yet on whether he himself will return to reprise his role as Jacob Goodnight....

Back in 2006, WWE produced a horror film called "See No Evil" with WWE wrestler Kane. The movie wasn't a big hit, but performed well-enough to become profitable. Now, during an interview, writer Dan Madigan revealed the bizarre idea Vince McMahon had for Kane's character. He explained: "I get a call from Gregory Dark, the director. He says, 'We've got a little problem here. Vince has a suggestion about the movie.' I said, 'Well, it's his movie.' He goes, 'Vince wants this scene in the movie where Kane's character pulls out his penis, and he wants it to be three feet long.' I thought there was a connection problem, I said 'Greg, can you just back up and repeat that last line for me?' He goes, 'Yes, Vince wants Kane's penis to be three feet long, and none of the producers are saying anything about it.' So I sat there,...

I was drawn to the VHS copy of softcore porn veteran Gregory Dark’s 1990 sci-fi thriller “Street Asylum” because of the picture of G. Gordon Liddy as a cyborg on the cover. Sadly, this scene does not appear anywhere in the film, a fact which sadden me to no end. Would I have purchased the flick had I known Liddy would not appear as some sort of half-man, half-robot? Probably not, though I’m certainly glad I did. “Street Asylum” follows the adventures of a Arliss Ryder (Wings Hauser), a cop who finds himself being recruited into a division of the police force known as Strike Squad after he’s injured in the line of duty. What our hero doesn’t realize, of course, is that someone is playing a deadly game, one that involves the lives of those dedicated officers who would love nothing more than to cleanse the streets of crime.

One slasher I refuse to get behind is Gregory Dark’s See No Evil. It was a good try, albeit one that never really came together. But that’s not stopping WWE Films from trying their hand at horror once again, this time with a survival horror story with some slasher elements.
We've already told you about No One Lives, but it turns out the presses might’ve been a bit premature with the previous casting update.
Bloody Disgusting is reporting that Adelaide Clemens (Silent Hill: Revelation) and Lee Tergesen (Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning) are the actual stars of No One Lives. It was previously stated that Alexis Dziena and Angus Macfadyen had been cast, although that appears to have been misinformation.
Clemens and Tergesen are joining Laura Ramsey (The Ruins), America Olivo (Neighbor), Luke Evans (The Raven) and WWE wrestler Brodus Clay in this horror flick scripted by David Cohen.

Frenemy
Directed by: Gregory Dark
Cast: Matthew Modine, Callum Blue, Adam Baldwin, Lisa Brenner, Zach Galifianakis
Running Time: 1 hr 20 mins
Rating: R
Due Out: December 14, 2010
Plot: Two men wander around Los Angeles after surviving a bank robbery at a porn store while discussing the possibilities of destiny intervening with their traumatic moment.
Who’S It For? People who are dedicated to finishing an entire movie, even if it appears that nothing is happening for a large chunk of it (even if the movie is only seventy-six minutes long).
Movie:
Talk doesn’t have to be cheap. Thousands of films, (especially those by Tarantino, who is idealized here in both conversational topics and soundtrack), can have an audience fully on board just with walking and talking heads discussing anything. From Ingmar Bergman’s three-hour long Scenes From A Marriage to Kevin Smith’s Clerk’s 2, no one has to...

America Lost And Found: The Bbs Story (Criterion) Perhaps the best DVD box set released this year, this ultimate cinefile stocking stuffer offered up by Criterion, the Rolls-Royce of home video labels, features seven seminal works from the late ‘60s-early ‘70s that were brought to life by cutting edge producers Bert Schneider, Steve Blauner and director/producer Bob Rafelson, the principals of Bbs Productions. In chronological order: Head (1968) star the Monkees, the manufactured (by Rafelson, et al), American answer to the Beatles who, like it or not, did make an impact on popular culture, particularly in this utterly surreal piece of cinematic anarchy (co-written by Jack Nicholson, who has a cameo), which was largely dismissed upon its initial release, but is now regarded as a counterculture classic. How do you sell a movie that, if people knew what it was actually about, they would never buy it? Why, prominently feature the most famous and well-liked cast member on the DVD box, even if he’s in the film for only 15 or so minutes, of course! Writing up a misleading description for the back won’t hurt either.
When you look at the Photoshop Disasters-worthy cover of Frenemy, Zach Galifianakis’ friendly face, framed by Callum Blue (Dead Like Me, Smallville) and Matthew Modine (Full Metal Jacket, Weeds), looks back at you. The visage, topped by big, round and red letters spelling out the film’s title, suggests a wacky comedy. The back description, on the other hand, brings to mind a dark comedy, albeit not the one this movie actually is. It describes a “group of friends” who witness a “horrifying crime” which leaves all but one unharmed.

If you haven't caught up on the year's best documentaries in time to fill out your top 10 list, three of them will be hitting DVD shelves this week, beginning with Josh Fox's Sundance award-winning "Gasland," an exploration of the "hydraulic fracturing" going on in own backyard, a type of drilling that has spread to 34 states in the U.S. and has left a host of reservoirs of toxic waste and frequent gas explosions along the way. For something less serious, but equally compelling, there is also Ricki Stern and Annie Sundberg's "Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work," which follows the...

Are you sick of Zach Galifianakis yet? Based on the mixed reviews of Due Date, I'd say that the backlash is already well underway, but that hasn't stopped him from trying to squeeze as much as he can out of the window of opportunity that The Hangover has provided him with. The man has appeared in at least five movies this year, and now there is yet another one due to hit store shelves before the end of the year. Yes, that's right, the movie is called Frenemy and it is another direct-to-dvd affair, not unlike Operation: Endgame which Anchor Bay also released this past summer. It seems like the kind of low budget stuff you should be avoiding once you're a big star, but what do I know? The movie is directed by Gregory Dark, who also did the Kane horror flick See No Evil, which is probably not a good sign.

Once upon a time, Gregory Dark’s “Frenemy” was called “Little Fish, Strange Pond”. I suppose someone with a suit and tie and a degree in marketing figured it would work better in a retail setting with a shorter title and a big ol’ picture of Zach Galifianakis on the cover of the DVD. Go figure. At any rate, the picture sounds interesting, particularly since someone once compared the production as a cross between Kevin Smith and David Lynch. Kevin Smith and David Lynch? I don’t know if I should be thoroughly horrified, deeply intrigued, or completely dumbfounded. After all, those are two names you don’t hear in the same sentence very often. At least in my world, anyway. Here’s what “Frenemy” is all about: After a group of friends witness a horrifying crime, they wonder how they were lucky enough to escape, unharmed, while one friend did not.

WWE Films cut its teeth on the horror genre with See No Evil , a simple and brutally violent vehicle for Kane to star in and f**k people up. Then there was The Marine . 'Nuff said. Moving on... The Undertaker may be getting a feature film all his own. Rumblings around various wrestling sites (the PWInsider broke the scoop) say WWE is looking to do a western set in the late 1800s and it will be an origin story. Given the Undertaker's macabre persona, we're guessin' there will be an element of the supernatural thrown in. That's just a guess. It would be great, too, to get Gregory Dark back in the director's chair. He gave See No Evil and slick look that would work well if applied to a gritty western. That's just our wishes. No word yet on how far along WWE's plans...
