Janet Dawson was born in 1939. She had a First degree in Modern Languages at St Hilda's College, Oxford. She joined the British Film Institute in 1967 and was editor of the Monthly Film Bulletin from 1971 to 1973. She was also deputy film critic of The Listener from 1968. She became a freelance writer and translator and at the time of her death, aged 41, she was working on a history of the New German Cinema. Jan Dawson died on 29 July 1980 at her home in London.
