Scare Flair Records, in partnership with Klaatu Records, has just announced this week that they’ll be releasing the Glenn Paxton soundtrack for the 1981 made for television classic Dark Night of the Scarecrow on vinyl for the first time.
Scare Flair notes, “Dark Night of the Scarecrow is a 1981 horror film directed by Frank De Felitta and starring Larry Drake, Charles Durning, and Lane Smith. The film was originally meant to be an independent feature but was purchased by CBS – turning it into a made for television film. The film was released on Saturday October 24, 1981 – as part of their Halloween line-up – and was very well received by critics and audiences. Dark Night of the Scarecrow is credited to have started the horror subgenre of the killer scarecrow.

TV is usually the first portal for horror when you’re a kid. At least it was for me; pre internet horror was found either: a) at the movies, b) in comic books, or c) the idiot box. And before we were allowed to see big screen horror, TV scratched that itch. Saturday mornings had Scooby Doo, The Hilarious House of Frightenstein, and various other shows, animated or not, to quench our growing curiosity for the weird, creepy, and unusual. But if we were lucky enough to be able to watch after 9 pm, things got much more interesting.
Terrifying stories of miniature monsters, witchcraft, Satanism, and creepy cults awaited our bloodshot eyes. TV was absolutely inundated with horror, channels dripping with malicious behavior in the form of weekly shows or made for TV movies. Of course, the networks (the big – and only – three: ABC, NBC, and CBS) back then had...

• Mystic Falls is losing its original resident witch. Kat Graham has announced she’s leaving The Vampire Diaries after Season 8 of the supernatural soap. We’re currently in Season 7, so don’t start weeping for Bonnie just yet. After suffering the loss of its female star, Nina Dobrev, on whom the entire series revolved, the show has struggled this season to find its balance. The CW has already renewed Tvd for next season, so we’re guaranteed at least one more year in Virginia with the hunky Salvatore brothers and friends. Hey, silver lining time: the characters on this show have died and come back so many times it’s almost comical, so maybe this is an opportunity for the show to really, honestly, seriously kill off one of the core ensemble!

At the top of a definite genre shortlist is William Wesley’s 1988 title Scarecrows, a little horror flick about the eponymous objects used to frighten birds away from crops. Unfortunately, to use a cheap analogy, their use as frightful entities on film is parallel to their safeguarding of crops, effective only to the cognitive capabilities of smaller creatures. While Wesley maintains an effective command of ambience throughout this nocturnal jaunt through the vegetation, a bounty of budgetary restraints, strained performances and belabored writing seemingly brought on by a limited concept mark the film as fodder for the Mystery Science Theater 3000 experience.

James Wan will produce a new take on The Entity, along with his The Conjuring producing partner Roy Lee.
This week's new remake to add to the list is a fresh take on Sidney Furie's 1983 horror flick, The Entity.
The original film starred Barbara Hershey, and was based on the novel by Frank De Felitta. In the movie, Hershey plays a woman attacked by a supernatural entity, with Ron Silver taking on the role of the doctor who thinks she's inflicted damage on herself.
The new take on the movie is to be produced by James Wan, who's directed The Conjuring, Insidious and Fast & Furious 7. Joining him on producer duties is Roy Lee, whilst Chad and Carey Hayes have been signed up to pen the new screenplay.
It's unclear as of yet who's going to direct the new film, or when to expect the new The Entity. But...

Though his spectacular work behind the camera on Furious 7 is sure to send countless blockbuster offers across his desk, James Wan is still keeping true to his bloodcurdling origins. The Insidious helmer will produce a remake of 1980s horror pic The Entity with the same creative team behind his 2013 horror hit The Conjuring.
Chad and Carey Hayes, who scripted The Conjuring and are also set to reteam with Wan in the same capacity when he directs next year’s The Conjuring 2: The Enfield Poltergeist, will write the screenplay, working from novelist Frank De Felitta’s original script. Roy Lee, a major player in the horror world, is also attached as a producer.

There's something more chilling about movies based on true events. Knowing that at least some version of what you're seeing on the screen actually happened in real life makes the movie more powerful. With the upcoming release of The Quiet Ones, we decided to reminisce about other movies based on horrific real life events.
The Quiet Ones is inspired by a true story of a university experiment done on a young girl that goes horribly, horribly wrong, so we focused on movies based on claims of supernatural true events.
There is a huge list of honorable mentions in this category. We could even break it down into sub-categories, like movies based on the antics of Ed Gein: The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, The Silence of the Lambs, Psycho and Deranged. True crime reenactments: In Cold Blood, Helter Skelter and Zodiac just to name a few of the best. Even real...

Stuffed with straw, dressed in rags and left to twist in the breeze, the typical mild-mannered scarecrow may not be built to frighten anything larger than your average feathered pest... but that hasn't stopped these eerie effigies from coming to life in our nightmares. For generations, this image of the harvest has been associated with the darker, colder days to come, so it wasn't long before spooky tales were being spun about evil scarecrows wandering the fields, intent on reaping something more substantial than corn. Cinematic scarecrows have come a long way since the lovable Wizard of Oz character, but some of them might still be looking for a brain... maybe even the one that's still in your skull. Let's look at some of the all-time scariest movie scarecrows ever to stalk the fields by moonlight... “Bubba” (Dark Night of the Scarecrow, 1981) This chilling made-for-tv classic presents one of the...

Valancourt Books is a small publisher that takes on important task of reviving rare, neglected, and out-of-print fiction. Many of their titles have been made into cult horror films and we wanted to share with Daily Dead readers an excerpt from The Entity. Released by Frank De Felitta in 1978, it’s probably better known as the 1982 film that starred Barbara Hershey. Here’s a look at an excerpt novel, along with the new cover art, and the movie trailer:
“Based on documented real-life events that happened to a California woman in 1974, Frank De Felitta’s provocative and disturbing novel The Entity (1978) is a classic of occult literature. Like De Felitta’s Audrey Rose (1975), which sold more than 2.5 million copies, The Entity was a worldwide bestseller, and was also adapted for a 1982 film starring Barbara Hershey. This edition features a new introduction by Gemma Files.”

Netflix Streaming Picks Review: 'Booker's Place' (Heartbreaking Tale Of American Racial Intolerance)
The feature documentary Booker's Place: A Mississippi Story is a penetrating, truly heartbreaking film about good old-fashion American racial intolerance, its consequences and legacy. The short story goes: In 1966, Frank De Felitta produced an NBC News documentary about race relations in Greenwood, Mississippi - a town famous for its lynchings of African Americans (plantations still existed, whippings were commonplace, as were church bombings), as tensions caused by the growing Civil Rights movement were at a near peak - focusing primarily on the people of Greenwood. 55 years later, Frank's son Raymond De Felitta follows in his father's footsteps with Booker's...

At 7:00 pm (check local listings) this Sunday, Dateline NBC will air a special report featuring the Tff 2012 documentary, Booker's Place: A Mississippi Story. Placing first in Criticwire's recent mid-year lists of Top Documentaries of 2012 and the Top Festival Premieres of 2012, this documentary by versatile filmmaker Raymond De Felitta (City Island, Two Family House) richly deserves the attention. It is also fitting that an NBC news show is featuring the film. In 1965, filmmaker Frank De Felitta produced a documentary for NBC News about racial tensions in Greenwood, a small town on the Mississippi Delta, during the height of the Civil Rights movement. While many African-Americans in the town were afraid to meet with the crew, one man threw aside caution and spoke to the camera. Truth-Telling from Mississippi to Israel to China to Texas
Yes, truth is the essence of documentaries. But whose truth? What truth? In dangerous times, truth is elusive. When pain lingers, truth digs deeper into the obscure. Regardless, sometimes truth must come out. Sometimes there is no choice. Sometimes even fear is no match for truth — such as in Booker’s Place: A Mississippi Story.
In 1965, filmmaker Raymond DeFelitta traveled to Greenwood, Mississippi to shoot a documentary for NBC News on racial tensions in the South. DeFelitta initially planned to capture the conflict from the perspective of Southern whites, yet the highlight of his film turned out to be a brief monologue by an African American.

Tribeca: Tell us a little about Booker's Place: A Mississippi Story. How do you describe the film in your own words? Raymond De Felitta: I think of Booker's Place: A Mississippi Story as a dramatic, narrative documentary. It's factual, but we also try to find a way to build it like a drama so that the events unfold in front of you. Tribeca: So I know there's a great story behind how this movie came to be. Can you give us a little synopsis of that? Raymond De Felitta: My father, Frank De Felitta, made seven or eight documentaries for NBC in the 1960s. I think they're wonderful time capsules; almost all of them are about current events. One in particular, I thought, was still so powerful because it was about the South and the Civil Rights era. When I found out that my father had made this film with Booker Wright,...

As is customary of most festivals these days, we’ve been informed (via Deadline) that four Tribeca titles will see a spring VOD release through Tribeca Film. In this grouping, we can look forward to Death of a Superhero (which we loved at Tiff), The Giant Mechanical Man, Sleepless Night (my most anticipated of the lot), and Booker’s Place: A Mississippi Story — all of which festival director Geoff Gilmore feels “embody the exceptional artistry and personal resonance that filmmaking at its finest can provide.” The lattermost of those will begin its VOD run on April 26th, while the other three can be expected on various platforms beginning April 17th.
You can read a synopsis of these four films below:

We got a heads-up this evening from Dark Night of the Scarecrow writer J.D. Feigelson himself that due to huge international demand, there is going to be a 30th Anniversary Blu-ray release of the fan favorite film this coming October.
Here's what J.D. told us: "It will have a lot of bonus material, most of which has never been seen. We are catering to the items which the fans have repeatedly asked for. The release street date is on or about October 4th, just in time for All Hallows."
Director Frank De Felitta's Dark Night of the Scarecrow tells of a mentally handicapped young man (Larry Drake of Darkman and Dr. Giggles villainy) wrongfully accused of assaulting a young girl in a rural farm community. Veteran character actor Charles Durning leads a lynch mob of locals to hunt down the gentle simpleton, who attempts to disguise himself as...

There’s good news for everybody who loves bad acting and silly hairdos: Nicolas Cage and John Travolta are looking to reform their winning Face/Off team. The last time we saw these two film giants on screen together they were stealing each other’s faces and parroting each other’s wackiest acting tics. Since then they’ve gone on to individually star in about a gazillion too hip for their age range acting roles. Cage has been experimenting mostly with multi-colored weaves, while Travolta has been dabbling mostly in pointy looking facial hair. So what are they planning on doing if they get back together? Well, it could be one of two things. The first possibility is a film called Shrapnel. It is about a Bosnian soldier who is seeking revenge against an American who wounded him in a deadly bit of back woods trickery. Shrapnel was written by Evan Dougherty, it...

It's been fifteen years since Nicolas Cage and John Travolta appeared in "Face/Off" together. NY Mag is now reporting that the two actors are planning to re-unite in two new independent thrillers. The first will likely be "Shrapnel," that Evan Dougherty (Snow White and the Huntsman) wrote. It follows a former Bosnian soldier who seeks vengeance against the American who badly wounded him by disguising a deadly war game as a friendly backwoods hunting trip. The script ended up on the 2008 Black List of best un-produced screenplays. The plan is to begin filming in June. The other project is "Sea Trial," based on Frank De Felitta's novel. The story revolves around a couple going on a romantic cruise that ends up a cruise through hell. The project is still looking for financing. The script is written by De Felitta's son Raymond.

If you happen to be a fan of John Woo's 1997 action-thriller Face/Off (and let's be honest, who isn't?), you just might be interested in this next news story. It appears that the mystical powers of Nicolas Cage and John Travolta may once again converge on the big screen for not one but two new movies. According to Vulture [1], they are both being courted for an upcoming indie thriller called Shrapnel, which would find them going head to head all over again. That's not all, however... they are also reportedly under consideration to star in Sea Trial, a thriller that takes place on a yacht. Who's in? Of the two projects, Shrapnel is the one that is most likely to happen first. John McTiernan (Die Hard) was attached to direct [2] last year, but unfortunately he ended up being sentenced to a year in prison, which obviously forced him to drop out.

Fourteen years since "Face/Off", stars Nicolas Cage and John Travolta look to be reuniting on two indie thrillers reports Vulture.
The first is the Evan Dougherty-scripted "Shrapnel" about a former Bosnian soldier who seeks vengeance against the American who badly wounded him. He sets up a plan in which he disguises a deadly war game as a friendly backwoods hunting trip.
"Die Hard" director John McTiernan was attached to the project late last year but had to bail due to his legal issues. Shooting is now aiming to begin in June.
The other film would be "Sea Trial" from "City Island" writer-director Raymond De Felitta. Based on Frank De Felitta's novel, the story follows a young couple on a romantic cruise which turns into hell while the middle-aged couple on board aren't who they seem to be.
Chuck Roven will produce and financing is currently being sought for that project.

One is a nephew of Francis Ford Coppola who changed his name and forged his own reputation with a slew of diverse roles equal parts insane and respectable. One is a Scientologist who was a lupine star in the early 80′s, suffered a decade-long career death only to return to the A-list as a Tarantino hitman-junkie. It looks like Nicolas Cage and John Travolta are going to team up for possibly not one, but two new films again for the first time since they starred together in 1997's Face/Off.
One film is called Shrapnel written by Evan Doughtery (Snow White and the Huntsman). It was on the 2008 screenwriter Black List of unproduced films. Two of the most famous, craziest and controversial actors working in Hollywood today could possibly team up for one or two upcoming films. John Travolta and Nicolas Cage, who previously co-starred in the 1997 John Woo blockbuster Face/Off, are rumored to be circling two upcoming projects. The first is Shrapnel, written by Evan Dougherty and directed by John McTiernan. The second is Sea Trial, based on the novel by Frank De Felitta. Shrapnel would go first, possibly this summer, as Sea Trial has yet to find funding, but Vulture reports Travolta and Cage are both interested in both films. Read more about them after the break. Vulture, who exclusively broke the news [1] of these projects, says that the 2008 Black Listed Shrapnel had locked up McTiernan last year. It stalled, though, when the Die Hard-director was fined $100,000 and sentenced to a year in prison for lying to a jury in a Hollywood wiretapping case.

*Full disclosure: a DVD screener of this film was provided by Vci Entertainment.
Director: Frank De Felitta.
Writer: J. D. Feigelson.
Cast: Charles Durning, Tonya Crowe, Larry Drake, and Lane Smith.
Dark Night of the Scarecrow was originally released on television in 1981. Recently, Vci Entertainment released this title in a DVD format September 29th, 2010. This film has been repackaged with a commentary from director Frank De Felitta (The Entity) and writer J. D. Feigelson (Red Water). This reviewer remembers becoming paranoid of grain silos after watching this film and there is a reason that this title is considered a classic. Dark Night of the Scarecrow is rewatchable for creating some of the cliches of modern film. This title is also a reminder not to play around wood chippers!
If you are unfamiliar with this film, a mentally challenged adult (Larry Drake) is accused of killing a young girl (Tonya Crowe), in a small town.

Barbara Hershey talks about her role in Black Swan and the potential pitfalls of a remake of her classic posession film The Entity .
Barbara Hershey, who starred in the shocking early 80s possession film The Entity (originally written by Frank de Felitta and based on a true story) is returning to psychological horror in the dark fantasy Black Swan as Erica, the disturbed and disturbing mother of ballet dancer Nina (played by Natalie Portman). At first Erica’s mothering seems loving, albeit a bit smothering, but it’s soon clear as the first half of the film moves on that she’s filled with resentment, jealously, rage, and is determined to protect Nina at all costs, no matter how much it may permanently harm her daughter.
While Nina vies the role of The Swan Princess in Swan Lake in the story, the characters in the film itself are modeled after characters in Swan Lake.

Halloween is always a good time to catch up on the horror flicks I've always meant to see but have slipped through the cracks over the years. This year is no exception and I've got a whole crap load of films I'll be checking out leading up to the premier of AMC's Walking Dead and then taking me well into the rest of the night.
Here's what I'm planning to spin this year:
- The Beyond (Lucio Fulci): I hear this is one of Fulci's best. Bat shit strange and full of his usual trashy gore.
- Dark Night of the Scarecrow (Frank De Felitta): This classic Mftv horror flick only recently became available on dvd through Vci. It's been called the first ever "scarecrow" horror pic, but whatever. It's supposed to have a real awesome old-time horror flick kind of feel.
- Devil's Backbone (Guillermo del Toro): Nope,...

- Dark Night of the Scarecrow (Frank De Felitta): This classic Mftv horror flick only recently became available on dvd through Vci. It's been called the first ever "scarecrow" horror pic, but whatever. It's supposed to have a real awesome old-time horror flick kind of feel.

After a couple of light on horror weeks, we are finally treated to a bumper crop of new releases. Headlining the week is Frozen, which is just what we in Southern California need to stave off our current heat wave. A couple of oldies but goodies are out, too, as Madman celebrates its Happy 30th Birthday and the original King Kong comes to Blu-ray. Fangoria's eight FrightFest titles bow as well.
Frozen
Directed by Adam Green
In Frozen (review), Adam Green has crafted a potent combination of absolute terror and compelling human drama that will stick with you long after you've left the theatre or turned off the DVD. One thing's for sure: The next time your friends invite you on a ski weekend, odds are you'll try to convince them to head to the beach instead. Frozen stars Shawn Ashmore, Emma Bell and Kevin Zegers.
Buy the Blu-ray or the regular DVD.
