Back in 1990, CBS’s The Flash was a favorite of young comic book fans. Growing up as a young comic book fan in the ’80s and ’90s was not easy. All you current comic fans have it so easy. I grew up in the dark times, my friends. We were glad when anything comic book related was on movies and TV. We were so desperate that we would make excuses for anything.
Superman III? Hey, he gets to fight an evil Superman.
Generation X? Look they’re in the X-mansion!
Howard the Duck? Yeah….I got nothing.
But every once in a while someone would get it right. Richard Donner’s Superman started it but it was Tim Burton’s Batman film in 1989 that started to change things. Sure we would eventually get duds like Batman & Robin, but we also had Batman The Animated Series and Blade. Yet for a long time,...

Dave Stevens: Drawn to Perfection is an authorized documentary of The Rocketeer and its late creator, marking the 40th anniversary of the character's comic-book debut as a backup strip in Pacific Comics' Starslayer #2. Influenced by classic adventure serials, Golden Age comics, and 1950s pin-up Bettie Page, The Rocketeer was a retro-futuristic story of 1930s stunt pilot Cliff Secord who discovers a rocket pack.
The 99-minute movie features 35 interviews with friends, collaborators, and admirers including director Joe Johnston, whose 1991 Rocketeer movie prefigured the similarly styled Captain America: The First Avenger (2011), Batman: The Animated Series creator Bruce Timm, Punisher actor Thomas Jane, and others.
Already filmed, the Kickstarter is purely to fund the physical release.
You can receive the Blu-ray with a pledge of $35 or more, and an exclusive Rocketeer one-shot comic is available for the higher pledges. This is based on an unmade comic-book script by the 1991 screenwriters Danny Bilson and...

There’s a scene in “The Rocketeer,” Disney’s big budget would-be blockbuster from the summer of 1991, that ranks among the most profoundly strange and transfixing moments in the studio’s storied history.
The scene, which takes place in 1938, unfolds right before the movie’s big, fiery climax at L.A.’s Griffith Observatory. Our hero, L.A. stunt pilot-turned-makeshift-superhero Cliff Secord (Billy Campbell) is in the office of Howard Hughes (a perfectly cast Terry O’Quinn). Hughes, it turns out, is the inventor of an experimental rocket pack that Secord has happened upon and utilized in a series of exciting action sequences. The FBI is there too. Hughes wants his rocket back, stressing how potentially dangerous it is, especially if it fell into the wrong hands. Secord wants to keep it.
To underline his point, Hughes shows Secord a film. “Keep watching, kid. It cost a man’s life to get this out of Germany,...

Jennifer Connelly is flying high these days on the big screen, both literally and figuratively. Starring opposite Tom Cruise in one of his signature roles, Connelly is the second lead in Top Gun: Maverick, a film which just shattered the Memorial Day box office record with a 160 million haul. The film also features an astonishing flying sequence in which Cruise takes Connelly up in what appears to be a World War II-era single-engine plane.
When we sat down with the Oscar winner last month, she told us that really was her up there in the clouds with Cruise at the controls. It was an extraordinary moment for Connelly, but not her first in a movie about pilots and their daredevil ways. Indeed, for audience members of a certain age, one of their first memories of Connelly may very well be her starring role in Disney’s cult classic, The Rocketeer.

The Rocketeer celebrated its 30th anniversary earlier this summer. The 1991 film starred Bill Campbell as Cliff Secord, a young stunt pilot who ends up in possession of an experimental jetpack and ends up embroiled in a crossfire between Nazi spies (led by Timothy Dalton), and the mafia (led by Paul Sorvino). It’s a terrific, charming action-adventure film, effectively paying homage to the movie serials of the 1930s and other Hollywood flicks of the era, all set to one of James Horner’s very best scores. But despite positive reviews, The Rocketeer wasn’t quite the Batman-sized blockbuster that studio Buena Vista Pictures hoped for at the time, and there were never any sequels produced.

Since the academy expanded the Best Picture category at the Oscars in 2010, Best Original Screenplay has gone to writers of a wide-range of genres: dramas; comedies (“Midnight in Paris”); biopics; true-life stories (“Spotlight”); period pictures (“Django Unchained”); war movies (“The Hurt Locker”); sci-fi (“Her”), thrillers (“Parasite”) and horror (“Get Out”). (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2021 Oscars predictions for Best Original Screenplay and be sure to check out our predictions for Best Adapted Screenplay.)
Regardless of the type of film, a nominee needs broad academy support to win this race. Indeed, all 11 of these most recent Best Original Screenplay winners were, at the least, Best Picture nominees. And six of them won the big prize, bringing the total number of Best Picture champs with Oscar-winning original screenplays to 18. By comparison, 41 films have done this on the adapted side.

The North Carolina Film Critics Association has announced this year’s winners, with A24’s “Minari” nabbing best picture — its first prize of the awards season. The film took four awards overall, including best supporting actress (Youn Yuh-jung), original screenplay (Lee Isaac Chung) and the Ken Hanke Memorial Tarheel Award for actor Will Patton.
“Nomadland” filmmaker Chloé Zhao continued her winning streaking, taking best director, in addition to adapted screenplay. At this current state, the Searchlight Pictures feature is the one to beat in the top categories, including best picture, although there are many other movies that could rival it down the line.
Sacha Baron Cohen won his first award for best supporting actor for his work in Aaron Sorkin’s “The Trial of the Chicago 7.” Although fellow nominee Paul Raci leads in critics’ prizes for “Sound of Metal,” five different actors have picked up supporting actor statuettes from the 10 awards announced thus far.

Another critics group has weighed in today, as the precursor season continues. This one is the North Carolina Film Critics Association, and their nominees highlighted a contender that’s currently doing a bit better than expected. It’s Spike Lee’s movie Da 5 Bloods, which some worried would get lost in the shuffle among Netflix awards contenders. In fact, it’s arguably doing better than any, showing up enough so far to give Delroy Lindo a boost in Best Actor and Chadwick Boseman a potential double nomination with a citation in Best Supporting Actor. It’s early days still, but Lee’s flick is doing very well. The Chicago Film Critics Association has named Chloé Zhao’s “Nomadland” as this year’s big winner, netting five prizes, including best picture, director, actress (Frances McDormand), adapted screenplay and cinematography. Leading the Cfca nominations with seven, the Searchlight Pictures drama has performed astoundingly with the half dozen critics awards that have been announced thus far. Zhao is currently 6/6 for critics wins.
With two awards, Focus Features’ “Never Rarely Sometimes Always” walked away with best original screenplay for writer Eliza Hittman and most promising performer for Sidney Flanigan.
The rest of the honorees won a single mention for their respective films. Chadwick Boseman won best actor for “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” while Paul Raci netted another trophy for “Sound of Metal.” Maria Bakalova’s work in “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” was also rewarded, marking her third win this season thus far.

One of the bigger critics groups gave out their citations today, with the New York Film Critics Circle announcing award winners for 2020. Da 5 Bloods (Best Actor for Delroy Lindo and Best Supporting Actor for Chadwick Boseman) and Never Rarely Sometimes Always (Best Actress for Sidney Flanigan and Best Screenplay for Eliza Hittman) tied for the most wins with two apiece. Nyfcc spread things out, also giving the thumbs up to Chloé Zhao and Nomadland, as well as something as off the wall as Borat Subsequent Moviefilm (Best Supporting Actress for Maria Bakalova). Editor’s note: Judging from last year’s positive response to our Read the Screenplay series, Deadline is kicking off a new season of publishing the scripts of films that will be factors in this year’s movie awards race. Stay tuned for more, but Spike Lee is a pretty good place to start.

A flash of lightning. An iconic red and gold costume. Weird sci-fi villains and blockbuster special effects. We could only be talking about the beloved The Flash TV series, right?

For screenplay Oscars, auteurs have the advantage. Academy voters give creators extra points for controlling their visions. That’s why “The French Dispatch” (Searchlight) — written by three-time screenplay nominee Wes Anderson and collaborators Roman Coppola, Hugo Guinness, and Jason Schwartzman — is a strong contender in this race.
Anderson’s latest European ensemble threads three storylines about the French outpost of a Kansas newspaper. The comedy stars Anderson regulars Bill Murray, Frances McDormand, Tilda Swinton, and Adrien Brody, plus newcomers Benicio del Toro, Jeffrey Wright, Elisabeth Moss, Léa Seydoux, and Timothée Chalamet. In 2015, Anderson’s “The Grand Budapest Hotel” scored nine Oscar nominations and won four tech Oscars after playing Berlin, a likely February launch pad for this movie with global appeal.
After winning Adapted Screenplay for “BlacKkKlansman,” Spike Lee was supposed to head the jury at Cannes 2020 and premiere his intense Vietnam drama “Da 5 Bloods” out of competition. Instead the movie,...

Powerful, beautiful, violent and emotional. Spike Lee has continued his great run by crafting a film that can be enjoyed as an exciting piece of cinema as well as delivering a complex look at the world.
I can’t remember the last time I watched a film that was so relevant and hit home so hard, in fact I don’t think I’ve ever seen one as relevant as Da 5 Bloods. When you think back to 1989 and what Spike Lee had to say about the current times in Do The Right Thing it can only make you sad, heartbroken and angry to think...

Spike Lee hits a new career peak with this game-changer about four, emotionally damaged African-American veterans who return to Vietnam in the Trump era to recover the body of their fallen brother-in-arms —n and maybe a semblance of their former selves. Debuting on Netflix on June 12th, Da 5 Bloods speaks urgently to our current moment. Lee had no idea that his movie would be released as the killing of George Floyd would inspire people to take to the streets in protest, but he’s known in his bones how...

Spike Lee’s “Da 5 Bloods,” his first feature since the Oscar-winning “BlacKkKlansman,” is an angry, incendiary and extraordinarily timely film that surveys decades of racism in the United States with a sharp, unflinching eye.
And “Da 5 Bloods” is also an adventure story about a quartet of Vietnam vets who return to the country where they once fought to find the remains of their squad leader, and also dig up some buried treasure that they left behind in 1968.
One of those things is significantly more involving than the other, and you probably don’t need much help figuring out which one it is. The in-country trek at the heart of the film is pretty routine by Lee’s standards; it’s the way he tells that story, the asides and the history lessons and the cutaways and the tricks that have become the director’s singular cinematic vocabulary, that...

After the Oscar-winning success of BlacKkKlansman, what filmmaker Spike Lee opted to follow it up with always always going to be inherently fascinating. After all, that movie had won Lee his first Academy Award. Would that move him in a more mainstream direction? If so, would any of his creative forces be blunted? Well, if any of that worried you, fear not. Da 5 Bloods, hitting Netflix on Friday, is certainly poised to be one of his most widely seen efforts, but it retains everything that makes him such a special and unique storyteller. Crafting an essential bit of cinema for our times, this is something that absolutely needs to be seen. The film is a drama, mixing in war elements. A quartet of African American Army veterans in Paul (Delroy Lindo), Otis (Clarke Peters), Eddie (Norm Lewis), and Melvin have returned to Vietnamese soil, decades after the war. During the Vietnam War,...

All eyes were going to be on Spike Lee’s follow up to his Oscar winning effort BlacKkKlansman. After all, it not just was a hit, getting nominated for Best Picture and Best Director, it got Lee his first Academy Award, taking home the prize for Best Adapted Screenplay. Well, Lee has chosen his next movie to be a wholly unique project, and today, Netflix debuted the First Trailer for Da 5 Bloods, a mix of war, drama, and a meditation on how America has treated black soldiers. You can see the Trailer below, but it looks great. Netflix could have a definite awards player here with this one, if all goes well… The film is combination of genres, as is Lee’s predilection. Here is the official Netflix synopsis: “From Academy Award® Winner Spike Lee comes a New Joint: the story of four African-American Vets — Paul (Delroy Lindo), Otis...

Da 5 Bloods trailer has arrived, previewing director Spike Lee’s intense, pathologically-potent Netflix feature following four African-American Vietnam War veterans who return to their former battlefield several decades later to recover a cache of gold and quell personal demons.
The events of the film unfurl through the time periods of the Vietnam War—in which our quartet of Paul (Delroy Lindo), Otis (Clarke Peters), Eddie (Norm Lewis) and Melvin (Isiah Whitlock Jr.) are young men—and a contemporary period in which they—joined by Paul’s adult son, David (Jonathan Majors)—return to the jungles to reclaim their gilded prize and recover the remains of their fallen squad leader—a flashback role provided by Black Panther himself, Chadwick Boseman.

“Time has come today,” barks the first trailer for the latest movie from Spike Lee, “Da 5 Bloods,” a war film that tells the story of the “soul brothers” who fought in the Vietnam War.
“Da 5 Bloods” is Lee’s follow-up to his Oscar-winning film “BlackKklansman,” and this first look, all scored to the Chambers Brothers song “Time Has Come Today,” has the energy, color and political spark of any Spike Lee joint.
It’s an original story about how four African American veterans return to Vietnam in search of their fallen squad leader’s remains, played by Chadwick Boseman, as well as a chest full of buried gold treasure left there during the war. But along the way they battle the forces of man and nature and confront the lasting ravages of “the immorality of the Vietnam War.”

Predicting the Best Picture winner is often the toughest among the 24 categories at the Oscars. We learned this at the 2020 Academy Awards. We were certain the top prize would go to “1917” but it was “Parasite” that prevailed. When making our Best Picture Oscar predictions, we weigh many factors, the most important of which is the effect of the preferential ballot that is used only for this race (voters rank all the nominees with the winner being the one that is the consensus choice.)
We also take into account the pedigree of the filmmakers, the critical reception to their previous films, the box office tally and the track record of the studios. We’ve taken all of these into consideration again as we look ahead to the 2021 Academy Awards. (Scroll down for the 2021 Oscars predictions for Best Picture.)

In their ongoing quest to bring most of Charles Band’s Empire Films from the ’80s to Blu-ray, Scream Factory is releasing another double feature containing two of the studio’s better efforts: 1984’s The Dungeonmaster (aka Ragewar) and Eliminators from 1986.
Though omnipresent in the horror genre since Dead of Night in 1945 (or even Waxworks in 1924 if you’re willing to count it), the anthology film has rarely extended into the realm of sci-fi or fantasy—Heavy Metal aside, of course. One of the rare exceptions is The Dungeonmaster, an anthology that assembles the all-star team of Empire Pictures in the mid-’80s: Charles Band, John Carl Buechler, Dave Allen, Ted Nicolaou, Pater Manoogian and several others.
Originally intended as a single story that was expanded by necessity into an anthology, The Dungeonmaster follows computer programmer Paul Bradford (Jeffrey Byron, star of Metalstorm: The Destruction of Jared-Syn), inventor of a...

A Planet Fury-approved selection of notable genre DVD releases for the month of January.
Lightning Bug (2004) Image Entertainment Blu-ray and DVD Available Now
Effects guru Robert Hall’s semi-autobiographical film about a small town teen (Reaper's Bret Harrison) who has aspirations to become a special effects artist. An opportunity to manage the town’s local haunted house is thwarted by his alcoholic stepfather and the staunchly religious views of the surrounding population. The solid supporting cast includes That 70’s Show’s Laura Prepon, Hellraiser’s Ashely Lawrence and Kevin Gage. Written and directed by Hall, it’s an affectionate coming-of-age drama that works in spite of an uneven narrative that falls apart in the final half hour. Hopefully this new extended cut will remedy the scripting problems of the original release.
Special Features include:
* Never-before-released extended cut of the film.
* Making-of Featurette
* Audio commentaries with the writer/director and cast.

Chicago – Twenty years before helming “Captain America,” director Joe Johnston made another superhero picture that was equal parts nostalgic and bombastically patriotic. Though 1991’s “The Rocketeer” was distributed by Walt Disney Pictures, the material is so dark that it’s worthy of Touchstone. As a throwback to Saturday morning serials and classic Hollywood archetypes, the film is likably breezy and instantly disposable.
Sharing the effects-laden hollowness of Johnston’s debut feature, “Honey, I Shrunk The Kids,” but lacking in its wit, there’s little wonder that “The Rocketeer” failed to find an audience during its initial theatrical run. Yet there are enough highlights here to solidify the film’s status as a cult classic, particularly Timothy Dalton’s suavely snake-like villain who, in many ways, out-charms the cocky protagonist.

For a movie based on a comic book set in the 1930s, The Rocketeer was actually ahead of its time. The movie was released as Disney’s big summer film in 1991, backed with tons of marketing, and planned as a big tent pole for their future.
The problem was, in 1991 there were precious few superhero movies creating a genre to support the fan following. When it opened that June there was nothing out there to support it and the groundswell of geekdom had yet to reach critical mass. Therefore, despite relatively positive reviews, the movie did minimal business, finishing 27th for the calendar and largely forgotten. Its director, Joe Johnston, went on to make a number of other hits and misses until he scored big earlier this year with Captain America. Now, taking his fame and the 20th anniversary into account, Walt Disney Home Entertainment has released The Rocketeer on Blu-ray and DVD today.

In the wake of his success with Captain America: The First Avenger, there’s little surprise that Marvel’s owner, Disney, is releasing the Blu-ray edition of director Joe Johnston’s earlier comics adaptation, The Rocketeer, on December 13. The underrated film was released 20 years ago and was a faithful adaptation of Dave Stevens’s homage to the serial heroes of the 1930s.
Starring Billy Campbell (The Oc, Enough), the movie also featured early work from Jennifer Connelly (Blood Diamond, The Dilemma) and also starred Alan Arkin (Little Miss Sunshine, Get Smart), and Timothy Dalton (The Tourist, Chuck). The movie was written by the team of Danny Bilson and Paul De Meo, who went from this to adapting The Flash for CBS.
The press release from Disney says the film has been given state-of-the-art digital restoration and enhanced high definition sound. Unfortunately, the lack of bonus features in the announcement is cause for concern.

Warner Bros continues to develop a big screen adaptation of DC Comics' "The Flash", from a script by Greg Berlanti, Michael Green and Marc Guggenheim ("Green Lantern"), for Berlanti to direct as a 2013 release.
Created by writer Gardner Fox and artist Harry Lampert, the original 'Flash' debuted in "Flash Comics" #1 (January 1940). In the origin story, 'Jay Garrick' accidentally inhaled hard water vapors that gave him super-speed, using heightened reflexes that seemed to violate all known laws of physics. He wore a winged metal helmet inspired by the Greek god Hermes (Mercury) .
'Barry Allen', the second 'Flash', was a police scientist, who gained his super-speed after being accidentally splashed by chemicals following a lightning strike.
Allen adopted "The Flash' name after reading a comic book featuring the adventures of Jay Garrick.
The third Flash, 'Wally West', formerly 'Kid Flash', gained his super-powers through an accident identical to Allen's.

On Tuesday night, Disney's El Capitan Theater was home to the 20th anniversary celebration of one of my favorite movies, The Rocketeer. A brand new never-before-seen print was screened for the sold out crowd, and writer/director Kevin Smith hosted a Q&A panel with director Joe Johnston, star Billy Campbell, seven time Academy Award winning make-up artist Rick Baker, screenwriters Paul De Meo and Danny Bilson, and artist William Stout.
Before the screening began, I introduced myself to Billy Campbell - The Rocketeer himself! - and he signed my ticket. While he was signing autographs for fans, some jackass poked his head into the crowd and told Campbell, "Hey man, this was one of my favorite movies when I was six!" Everyone shot him a look, and I instantly responded, "This is one of my favorite movies Now." Campbell smiled to himself and nodded at me slightly.
The movie...

If you live in Los Angeles (or within driving distance) and you're a fan of Joe Johnston's The Rocketeer, this is for you.
This Tuesday, June 21st, 2011, Disney is hosting a 20th anniversary screening of a newly restored version of the film at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood, the same theatre where it premiered back in 1991. And though the movie is fantastic - it happens to be one of my all-time personal favorites - the film itself isn't even the main attraction at this event. Writer/director/fanboy favorite Kevin Smith will be hosting a panel before the film featuring director Joe Johnston (Captain America: The First Avenger), the Rocketeer himself Bill Campbell, legendary make-up designer Rick Baker, screenwriters Danny Bilson and Paul De Meo, and illustrator William Stout to talk about the movie.
All audience members will get a special 20th anniversary Rocketeer program, and D23 Members...

Director: Michael Nankin.
Writers: Paul De Meo and Andrew Kreisberg.
SyFy's Red Faction: Origins premiered Saturday, June 4th, with a second showing Monday, June 6th and there is also an upcoming DVD release of this title, August 30th. The launch of this film almost coincides with the release of the latest Red Faction game, titled Red Faction: Armageddon, which can be unpacked June 7th. So obviously, there is some cross promoting occurring between the SyFy Channel and Thq. The film itself is an exciting, action paced thriller, set on Mars. Twenty-Five years previous to the show's main events, a group of socialists fought for freedom, against the Earth Defense Forces. However, the battle still rages on, as Red Faction, led by Alec (Robert Patrick) and Jake Mason (Brian J. Smith), must battle marauding tribes and the remnants of the Earth Defense Forces, now called The White Faction.
