He was elected a fellow of Wadham College at Oxford University in 1936 before he became a research assistant to Winston Churchill. In 1946, he returned to Oxford University. In 1950 he was appointed the First Warden of St. Antony's College at Oxford University until his retirement in 1968, and he moved to France that same year.
