Amy Winehouse biopic “Back to Black” is close to securing its lead.
Multiple sources tell Variety that Marisa Abela, one of the stars of HBO and BBC drama “Industry,” is a frontrunner to play Winehouse. It’s believed Abela is in discussions, though the role isn’t yet locked in and a small group of other actors are also believed to be in the mix.
As previously reported, the role was always intended to go to a newcomer, and producers have been keen to hire a fresh face rather than go down the pop-star casting route.
The scene-stealing Abela plays the privileged but troubled Yasmin Kara-Hanani in the sexy, London-set financial thriller “Industry,” which returns next month for Season 2. The 25-year-old British actor also starred in Sky TV series “Cobra” and appears alongside James Norton in the crime thriller “Rogue Agent” (previously titled “Freegard”). She also appears in the forthcoming drama “She Is Love,...

A biopic about Amy Winehouse is in the works, helmed by “Nowhere Boy” director Sam Taylor-Johnson.
European studio Studiocanal is backing the film, which has been tightly under wraps. Variety understands that a script for the movie has begun circulating and is now in casting stages. It’s believed Taylor-Johnson hopes to cast a relative newcomer for the part of Winehouse.
The film is believed to be very much a passion project for Taylor-Johnson, who was a close friend of Winehouse’s.
Interestingly, “Back to Black” has the full support of Mitch Winehouse, the late singer’s father, who was portrayed in a negative light in the Oscar-winning documentary “Amy.” Mitch Winehouse also participated in the 2021 BBC documentary “Reclaiming Amy,” which marked the 10-year anniversary of Amy’s death.

These boots were made for Broadway, and that’s just where they’ll be — until the spring. Producers Daryl Roth and Hal Luftig said today that Kinky Boots, which won six Tony Awards including Best Musical in 2013, will close on April 7.
When the final curtain falls, it will have played 2,507 regular performances and 34 previews — good for the 25th-longest-running show in Main Stem history.
“When we first set out to make this show, we never could have imagined the success it would have here on Broadway and around the world,” said co-creators Harvey Fierstein and Cyndi Lauper, who became the first woman to win the Tony for Best Score. “We speak on behalf of the entire company when we say how grateful we are to the fans who have embraced our work across four continents, and counting.”

Back in 1997, director Peter Cattaneo made waves by delivering a hilarious comedy about out of work steel workers becoming male strippers in The Full Monty. Unfortunately, he followed it up eleven years later by directing 2008's The Rocker, which despite its best efforts with plenty of cameos, just couldn't measure up to the far superior School of Rock. Maybe he can redeem himself as Variety reports he will direct the hockey comedy What the Puck that's inspired by a true story of a father and son who bond after a messy divorce through their mutual love of ice hockey which leads the duo to the World Junior Championships in Canada. Fellow Brit Geoff Deane (Kinky Boots) wrote the script which is another in a sudden trend of hockey based films. Recently Jason Reitman mentioned at least a fleeting interest in writing some sort of comedy about a hockey referee, and...

The last time Full Monty director Peter Cattaneo got behind the camera, it was for Rainn Wilson comedy The Rocker, which didn’t exactly thrill the box office. So he’s switching to something even smaller in scale, signing up to tackle a father/son-bonding tale that focuses on a love of Hockey. What The Puck, which was inspired by a true story, will see the dad and his child trying to reconnect after the family is split by a messy divorce. Their shared love of ice hockey sees them ending up at the World Junior Championships, held in Canada. With a script by Kinky Boots writer Geoff Deane, it sounds like the perfect, low-key, project for Cattaneo to put on the big screen. There’s no word on when it’ll start shooting, but we’re sure backers Ealing Studios will want him getting to it as soon as possible.

Richard Loncraine is ready to produce and direct "The Perfect Margarita."
Written by Geoff Deane, the film follows a New York marriage counselor who leads a messy life. While his best friend is trying hard to help him find a girlfriend, he suddenly realizes he feels more for her than he thought.
Loncraine told Variety the project will be a feel-good movie because he thinks people are not looking for dark films and unhappy endings in times of a troubled economy.
Loncraine also directed the decent romance "Wimbledon," which starred Paul Bettany and Kirsten Dunst. He followed up with 2006's disappointing thriller "Firewall."
"My One and Only," Loncraine's latest comedy with Renee Zellweger, Nick Stahl and Kevin Bacon, is currently competing at the Berlin Film Festival.
