It was heartbreaking when the copyright dispute between original Friday the 13th producer/director Sean S. Cunningham and screenwriter Victor Miller came up and brought any further development of the extremely cool Friday the 13th video game to a screeching halt. Now here’s another franchise video game heartbreaker: the folks at Saber Interactive have announced that they won’t be developing any new content for Evil Dead: The Game, and plans to bring the game to Nintendo Switch have been abandoned.
Here’s the announcement:

No information was given on exactly why Saber had decided to set aside any further development of the game. It would be odd if there are licensing issues, because the rights to the overall Evil Dead franchise seem to be rather clear cut: they’re owned by franchise creator Sam Raimi, producer Rob Tapert, and star Bruce Campbell.

Written and directed by Raimi, the original The Evil Dead has the following synopsis: Ash, his girlfriend Linda, his sister Cheryl, and couple Scotty and Shelly, drive to a remote cabin in the woods for a fun getaway. While there, they find the Naturom Demonto / Necronomicon Ex-Mortis (aka “The Book of the Dead”), an ancient tome whose text reawakens the dead when read out loud. There’s a kind of shaggy glory to Evil Dead: Sam Raimi’s demonic scary movie series spawned from the writer/director’s triumphant indie horror marvel from 1981. Starring childhood friend Bruce Campbell and shot in the Tennessee wilderness with next to no budget, the inaugural outing with Raimi’s Necronomicon (aka Book of the Dead) and its flesh-ripping Deadites — also known by the original film’s title, “The Evil Dead” — established a formula for four more films with immeasurable influence on skin-peeling, tendon-snapping, chainsaw-revving pop culture as we know it.
The first film sees final guy Ash Williams (Campbell), his sister Cheryl (Ellen Sandweiss), his girlfriend Linda (Betsy Baker), and friends Scott (Richard DeManincor) and Shelly (Theresa Tilly) heading out for a stay at a remote cabin. Once there, a cursed book and tape summons a demonic presence that slowly begins to feast on the souls of the unlucky travelers one by one.

(Welcome to Scariest Scene Ever, a column dedicated to the most pulse-pounding moments in horror with your tour guides, horror experts Chris Evangelista and Matt Donato. In this edition, Matt returns to the original "The Evil Dead.")
In keeping with the "Evil Dead" theme in preparation for "Evil Dead Rise" on April 21, let's return to where it all began. Sam Raimi's "The Evil Dead" is an infamous video nasty that started one of horror's most beloved franchises. Between the original trilogy, Fede Álvarez's requel, and "Ash vs Evil Dead," there's something for everyone starting with a low-budget darling that held nothing back. It's grotesque, unbelievably scrappy, and inventive in the face of financial shortcomings. "The Evil Dead" is a miracle, so let's treat it like one.
"The Evil Dead" is Raimi's first and least comedic of the original trilogy. Practical effects can be more traumatizing than blending over-the-top humor and extravagant goriness.

The "Evil Dead" trilogy is not particularly renowned for its strict continuity. Quite the contrary, actually — the three films, "The Evil Dead," "Evil Dead II," and "Army of Darkness," employ some notably loose connective tissue between each movie.
Some of this is due to the shifting creative approach, as the first film's ultimate experience in grueling terror morphs into the sequel's outrageous slapstick (or perhaps "splatstick" is a better term) before shifting completely into the period adventure comedy of "Army of Darkness." The continuity confusion also infamously stems from the films' production issues, with access to rights for recap footage requiring director Sam Raimi and company to reshoot and reconceive the backstory for each prior entry. There's also the fact that the "rules" Raimi establishes for the Deadites in the first "Evil Dead" are purposely vague, with victims being possessed and un-possessed seemingly at the drop of a hat, for instance.

In 1978, close friends Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell, who shared a history of filming low-budget shorts on Super 8 mm, decided to approach the horror genre with newfound zest. With prior experience directing only comedic films, Raimi started working on a proof-of-concept horror short to attract investor attention and cast Campbell and Ellen Sandweiss as its leads. This project was titled "Within the Woods," which followed a group of friends vacationing at a remote cabin in the woods who experience demonic possession and unimaginable horrors. After the short managed to raise enough money from investors, Raimi fleshed out the initial premise into his low-budget, DIY feature-length horror debut, "The Evil Dead." Upon its release, the face of horror changed forever.
From a narrative perspective, "The Evil Dead" relies on traditional horror tropes that often segue into characters making really dumb decisions that eventually seal their fates. Moreover, the central source of threat in the film,...

Just last month, Evil Dead: The Game was updated to add the characters of Mia and David Allen from the 2013 Evil Dead movie. This month, it’s going to receiving the “Hail to the King” update – and it’s quite appropriate that the update is named after a line from Army of Darkness, because it involves the addition of an Army of Darkness-inspired single player mission and a character from Army of Darkness!
The new single player mission has the following description: “Castle Kandar’s Witch has opened a rift in time and space. Henry the Red must put her to the sword to save mankind.“
The Army of Darkness character who is being added to the game is The Blacksmith. In the film, the Blacksmith was played by Timothy Patrick Quill, who unfortunately passed away last year at the age of 63. It’s a nice tribute to Quill that...

Last month, the developers of Evil Dead: The Game announced that the character Mia Allen, who was played by Jane Levy in the 2013 Evil Dead, will be added to the game as a playable character on September 8th. A week later, it was announced that Mia’s brother David Allen, who was played by Shiloh Fernandez, is also being added to the game on September 8th. Now more details on the game’s versions of these characters have been revealed!
Here’s the information on Mia: “All that anger, all that terror – now, she’s learned how to use them. Her abilities include converting her own fear into damage and complete resistance to demon possession.”
And here’s the information on David, whose arrival in the game coincides with the arrival of a new weapon, the nail gun: “Whatever it takes, David will be there until the end. His team-boosting...

Almost every horror movie stops for a moment of exposition that sets up or explains the horrors that await or that have been endured. These are the scenes where directors can either conjure their inner cheeseball and pump up the spooky music or prepare the audience for more than what they bargained for. The legend of the monster, the backstory of the slasher, the warning to the meddling teenagers, these are all elements of atmosphere designed for one thing: to make you squirm before the real scares begin.

American Werewolf in London (1981) – Beware the moon
The horror genre is at its most impactful when leaving exposition to a minimum. Prioritizing narrative clarity over effective scare-mongering may ensure a tight narrative that can’t be held up to scrutiny, but it also ensures that the audience knows what to expect, all but draining the movie of tension. In An American Werewolf in London,...

Taking on a classic is a gutsy move, even for an award-winning filmmaker. And when director Kimberly Peirce signed on to re-imagine Stephen King's horror classic "Carrie," about a teenage girl with telekinetic powers hellbent on revenge, she knew she had some sky-high expectations to meet.
"I'd make a joke and say, 'I didn't give a f*ck,' but of course I felt pressure!" she told us recently while doing press for "Carrie." "But I think pressure is good."
All that pressure had Peirce thinking long and hard about what it would mean to sign on to a project of this scale, with its history and existing fan base. Having made just one film, 2008's "Stop-Loss," since her 1999 directorial debut, "Boys Don't Cry," it's clear, as a filmmaker, she doesn't make decisions lightly.
"I walked into this feeling a huge responsibility, much like I did with 'Boys Don't Cry...

Remake of Raimi's early '80s cult classic (and minor box-office performer) to easily surpass Jurassic Park 3D rerelease to land at the top of the domestic chart This past weekend, the no. 1 release at the Us/Canada -- actually, around the world -- box office was the widely panned 3D-converted sequel of a widely panned flick based on a toy. This weekend (April 6-8), in addition to the 3D toy-movie sequel mentioned above, two of the other top four movies on the domestic b.o. chart will be the remake of a bloody cult classic and the 3D-converted relaunch of a 1993 horror blockbuster. As the old saying goes, moviegoers are eager, thirsty, yearning for fresh, original content. That surely helps to explain why the brought-back-to-life Evil Dead will be this early April weekend's top film, likely to be followed by (toy movie sequel) G.I. Joe: Retaliation, the animated The Croods,...

They’re wobbly, dangerous, and a familiar sight in the movies. Here’s our celebration of the most memorably rickety bridges in cinema…
It's a plot device familiar from numerous films: the rickety bridge. Whether you're making a horror, disaster or action movie, a rickety or collapsing bridge is a quick, simple way of introducing added suspense. The wobbly crossing and tumbling walkway is such a familiar movie staple, in fact, that I almost wonder if the writers of Hollywood don't have some sort of patent on the device.
What follows is a selection of some of the most poorly made, disaster-prone bridges in cinematic history...
The Lost World (1925)
One of the earliest examples of a cinematic rickety bridge I've seen, this early adaptation of Conan Doyle's dinosaur-filled novel was a clear influence on the numerous monster movies that came after.
To get across a chasm into the lost world of the title,...

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment was kind enough to send us a review copy of the Blu-ray release of “The Evil Dead” written and directed by Sam Raimi (Spider-Man trilogy, Drag Me To Hell) and produced by Robert G. Tapert (Drag Me To Hell, The Grudge). Its cast features Bruce Campbell (Evil Dead 2, Army of Darkness), Ellen Sandweiss (My Name is Bruce), Hal Delrich (Crimewave), Betsy Baker (TV’s “Southland”, “E.R.”) and Sarah York (TV’s “Dangerous Women”). Five Michigan State University students venture into the hills to spend a weekend at an isolated cabin. There they discover an ancient Sumerian text, known as the “Morturom Demonto”; roughly translated as “The Book of [...]...
