It is believed that Wpl will change the lives of hundreds of women cricketers, both in India and overseas.
In an auction held earlier this year, the five franchises — Delhi Capitals, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Gujarat Giants, Up Warriorz, and Mumbai Indians — were sold for a total sum of Rs 4,699.99 crore.
In the players’ auction that followed, India opener Smriti Mandhana went for the highest price, with Royal Challengers Bangalore shelling out Rs 3.40 crore for her.
So, is the Wpl all set to change the face of women’s cricket in the country?
Ians spoke to Indian Premier League (Ipl) Chairman and former Bcci Treasurer Arun Dhumal to get his views on the upcoming league.
Excerpts:
Ians: You have been the Bcci Treasurer and now you are the Ipl Chairman… How different are the two roles?

New Delhi, Sep 18 (Ians) The recent Supreme Court judgement, which allowed Bcci to make amendments in its constitution to relax the much-debated and mandatory three-year cooling-off period, has paved the way for Bcci president Sourav Ganguly and secretary Jay Shah to continue for another term in office.
As per the new order, the cooling-off period for office-bearers will kick in after two consecutive terms at either the Bcci or at the state association level. So the office-bearers can now have a maximum of 12 years at one go: Two three-year terms at the state association level and two three-year terms at the Bcci, and after this, the cooling-off period will be applicable.
Before joining Bcci in October 2019, both Ganguly and Shah had already served one term each at the state level, which meant that they would have been disqualified under the existing rule. However, the latest Supreme Court decision has come...

New Delhi, March 16 (Ians) With the Indian cricket board (Bcci) and the Gujarat Cricket Association (Gca) deciding to hold the last three T20 Internationals against England behind closed doors in the wake of rising Covid-19 cases, it looks clear that whatever chances the Indian Premier League (Ipl) had of attracting crowds in the later stages are dissipating fast. Even then, the Bcci is keeping its options open.
While the Bcci had said in an official statement on March 7 earlier that the tournament will be held behind closed doors to begin with, it had said a decision to allow crowds for the later stages would be take later.
On Monday, Bcci treasurer Arun Dhumal reiterated to Ians that crowds will not attend Ipl games but added that the Bcci has still kept the option of having crowds for the later stages of the tournament.

New Delhi, Jan 30 (Ians) The Indian cricket board is planning to host this year's Indian Premier League (Ipl) in India and is not ruling out the possibility of holding it in a hub.
The lengthy tournament that is expected to exceed 50 days -- the 2020 edition lasted 53 days -- will present the Board of Control for Cricket in India (Bcci) with a variety of challenges, including those like regular testing at venues.
"As of now it has been decided that the Ipl should be happening in India. In case the same situation prevails [with declining Covid-19 cases in India], then it should happen in India," Bcci treasurer Arun Dhumal told Ians.
"We want to do it in India as the Ipl is an Indian league. Hopefully, the situation remains the same. It would depend on how safe it is to have eight venues. Maybe we can think of a hub. We will take the...

Close-Up is a feature that spotlights films now playing on Mubi. Raja Nawathe's Gumnaam (1965) is now showing in the series A Journey into Indian Cinema. In front of a quaint hotel in an undisclosed location, a man gets run over. The mastermind behind the murder hides in shadows and smokes a cigarette before paying off the assassin. Cryptic phone conversations about a will follow before this man, too, is killed. He is shot by a man in a trench coat and a hat. We only see his shadow while a hanging telephone handset gets soaked in blood.Raja Nawathe started out his career in the Hindi film industry by assisting superstar-filmmaker Raj Kapoor and in 1965, he decided to make an unauthorized adaptation of Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None, but with his usual romance melodrama tropes intact. The result was Gumnaam (meaning “anonymous”), produced by Kapoor’s Prithvi Pictures.
