"White Collar" and "The Normal Heart" star Matt Bomer is set to play hunky 1950s actor Montgomery Clift in an HBO TV movie.
Set after he broke through to stardom in the John Wayne western "Red River" the story centers on the complicated life of Clift (Bomer) as he becomes deeply involved with a young Elizabeth Taylor following the filming of "A Place in the Sun".
The closeted Clift went on to an iconic role in "From Here to Eternity" in 1953, but was caught up in a car crash in 1956 (at the age of 35). He survived, but was partly paralysed and he became an addict. Ultimately he died of a heart attack at 45.
"Love is Strange" duo Ira Sachs and Mauricio Zacharias are set to pen a re-write of a script by Christopher Lovick, but no director is attached as yet. Tony Lipp, Alix Madigan, Michael Din and Larry Moss will executive produce.

Matt Bomer may have been passed over for the lead role of Christian Grey in the upcoming film adaptation of "Fifty Shades of Grey," but he's not hurting for prestige roles: The "White Collar" actor is set to play Montgomery Clift in a biopic centered on the Hollywood star.
Deadline reports that the indie biopic, being shopped by Pier 3 Pictures' Michael Din, Janine Giaime and Juri Henley-Cohn, will be directed by Larry Moss from a script by Christopher Lovick. The plan is to aim for a 2014 start date.
In Clift, Bomer finds himself the chance to step into the shoes of a true Hollywood icon. During his prime, Clift rivaled Marlon Brando as one of the silver screen's biggest male stars. Starring in films including "A Place in the Sun" and "From Here to Eternity," he was a Method actor who refused to make his private life public.
