Ryan Murphy’s upcoming FX series “Feud: Capote vs. The Swans” boasts one of the greatest casts of the TV season. But it has also broken new ground on the music side: a father-daughter team providing the musical score.
It’s believed to be a first for music in films and TV. Emmy winner and 15-time Oscar nominee Thomas Newman has written the theme, but his daughter Julia Newman, in her first major outing, has composed the score for the entire eight-hour miniseries.
Julia Newman, 29, earned a master’s degree from the University of Southern California’s screen scoring program in 2020 and has since worked on short films, documentaries, games and web series. Accompanying Meryl Streep, Candice Bergen, Dianne Wiest and the rest of Soderbergh’s cast crossing the Atlantic on the Queen Mary 2 is a jazz score that might easily have been penned by John Barry (“The Knack”), Neal Hefti (“The Odd Couple”) or Henry Mancini (“The Pink Panther”).

Composer Michael Giacchino has finally managed to realize a long-held dream: his first solo album, released Friday, which combines science-fiction storytelling with lounge music and an overall theme that is unexpectedly relevant to our times.
It’s called simply “Travelogue, Volume 1,” and is credited to “Michael Giacchino and his Nouvelle Modernica Orchestra.” Mondo is releasing it on vinyl as well as to streaming platforms and digital retailers.
The Oscar and Emmy winner has been working nonstop for years on films in the “Star Trek,” “Jurassic World,” “Planet of the Apes,” “Incredibles” and Marvel Universe franchises. So when the pandemic hit, he decided to write something just for himself.
“I love old radio dramas,” he tells Variety. “I love the music of Arthur Lyman, Martin Denny and Les Baxter. And I loved Captain Kirk’s ship logs from the original ‘Star Trek.’ I took those and just mashed them all together into a concept album.

Director Antoine Fuqua was provided with a surprising gift when he began making his contemporary remake of “The Magnificent Seven”: Seven themes composed by the late Oscar-winning composer James Horner (“Titanic”), who died last year in a plane crash. Horner didn’t live long enough to screen any footage, but he read the script and provided the backbone of the score for Fuqua. Indeed, after collaborating on “Southpaw” together, Horner convinced the director to make “The Magnificent Seven” when he was ambivalent about the project and worried about financing.
Horner, in fact, was on such a steady ascent before his fatal crash (including Mel Gibson’s “Hacksaw Ridge” and “The Great Wall”), that he discussed greater collaboration with producer-composer-arranger Simon Franglen (the Grammy-winning “My Heart Will Go On” from “Titanic”). They also worked together on the gritty, electronic-tinged “Southpaw,” and Franglen later arranged “Skyfall” and “Spectre” for composer Thomas Newman.
