Beloved actor Bob Odenkirk currently comes in third place to win Best Drama Actor for “Better Call Saul,” according to Gold Derby’s Emmy predictions. His 5/1 racetrack odds tie him with 2020 winner Jeremy Strong (“Succession”) and put him behind leading contenders Lee Jung-jae (“Squid Game”) and Brian Cox (“Succession”). The other nominees are Adam Scott (“Severance”) and Jason Bateman (“Ozark”). But don’t count out Odenkirk’s Emmy chances just yet. In fact, he still has the unwavering support of six Experts, three Editors and three Top 24 Users.
The half-dozen Gold Derby Experts who predict Odenkirk will prevail on Monday night are Christopher Rosen (Gold Derby), Tim Gray (Variety), Debbie Day (Rotten Tomatoes), Matthew Jacobs (Thrillist), Susan King (Gold Derby) and Ken Tucker (unaffiliated). The three staff editors backing him are Rosen, Matt Noble and Riley Chow. And the trio of Top 24 Users are Thomas Dolby, Nakss and Giuliano Demonte.

Netflix released the new original film “Spiderhead” last week, but in addition to debuting a new thriller starring Chris Hemsworth and Miles Teller, the streamer also unveiled a truly killer soundtrack of yacht rock staples – and you can see the full “Spiderhead” soundtrack list below.
Directed by Joseph Kosinski (“Top Gun: Maverick”) and written by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick (“Deadpool”), “Spiderhead” is based on a dystopian short story by George Saunders and takes place entirely at a facility called – you guessed it – Spiderhead. Run by Chris Hemsworth’s Steve Abnesti, this facility is host to prisoners serving long sentences who have agreed to take part in an experimental drug trial in exchange for more freedoms.
But as Teller’s prisoner character Jeff soon learns, there may be more than meets the eye when it comes to the true nature behind these experimental drug trials.

In real life, there would probably be no shortage of people willing to commit crimes if it resulted in being given free reign to wander around a minimum-security prison and receive psychedelic drugs administered by Chris Hemsworth. So it’s not too much of a stretch to go along with the imaginative premise of Netflix’s new, nearly unclassifiable film starring the MCU veteran along with Miles Teller and Jurnee Smollett.
Based on a short story by George Saunders, Joseph Kosinski’s Spiderhead could be categorized as sci-fi, except its central conceit isn’t all that far removed from our “better living through chemistry” reality. It’s a thriller at times, but also a wickedly funny dark comedy. And it features a nostalgia-inducing yacht rock soundtrack that slyly comments on the action.

There is only one way to escape from Spiderhead in sly postmodern scamp George Saunders’ all-but-unfilmable short story “Escape from Spiderhead,” and it rhymes with skip-to-my-lou-icide. Unlike print fiction, where pretty much anything goes, movies that feature acts of self-harm must be very careful, since audiences have been known to emulate those same acts. Right up front, Netflix warns viewers of its woefully wrongheaded adaptation that the movie features such behavior. But if Netflix really cared about our well-being, why release a film so bad, we’d do practically anything to escape from “Spiderhead” ourselves?
No one would blame you for sampling it in the first place. Saunders is a wickedly funny author with more major writing prizes than Meryl Streep has Oscars. The tricky source material was translated by “Deadpool” duo Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, who understand how to walk the line between outrageous and offensive, and then...

Along came a spider…but these inmates are the ones really caught in a deceitful web.
Netflix’s psychedelic psychological thriller “Spiderhead” pairs mind-freeing drugs with the physically constraining prison system. Based on George Saunders’ New Yorker short story “Escape from Spiderhead,” the film stars Jurnee Smollett and Miles Teller as two inmates who reflect on their past crimes thanks to drug-induced trips in a state-of-the-art penitentiary, run by visionary scientist Steve Abnesti (Chris Hemsworth).
Joseph Kosinski directs the Netflix film, premiering June 17.
The official synopsis teases a cat and mouse game as Hemsworth instructs prisoners to wear devices that administer dosages of experimental drugs, in exchange for reduced sentences. There are no bars, no cells, or orange jumpsuits in this revolutionary prison called Spiderhead. Instead, “incarcerated volunteers” are free…with certain boundaries. What is free will if one man has control over all minds and bodies?

A prison that encourages drug use? Well, that just might have to be the stuff of fiction…for now.
Netflix has adapted George Saunders’ New Yorker short story “Escape from Spiderhead,” about two inmates (played by Jurnee Smollett and Miles Teller) who grapple with their past crimes while living in a state-of-the-art penitentiary run by a brilliant visionary (Chris Hemsworth) who experiments on inmates with psychedelic drugs.
“Spiderhead” premieres June 17 on the streamer.
The tradeoff for being a test subject is a commuted prison sentence, but when the open-concept prison is challenged, the experiments start to push the limits of free will. The psychological thriller is directed by Joseph Kosinski and written by producer Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick.
Director Kosinski revealed that the pop classic soundtrack, with tracks including Thomas Dolby’s “She Blinded Me With Science” and Hall & Oates’ “You Make My Dreams,” came to him while at the dentist.

Part of our on-going series, Notebook Soundtrack Mixes.Ryuichi Sakamoto can be found at home in a vast array of places. There is always a grounding within his music wherever you are in the world or, in his movie soundtracks, with whatever character you are following on screen. Subtle hints of Sakamoto’s signature sound always bubble to the surface. The notion of Eastern and Western sound distinctions do not matter to Sakamoto; instead, the play and fusion between these differing worlds and sounds has always been of more interest, to Sakamoto it’s all about the emotion produced—a universality that eventually moves the sound beyond place. The musician and composer needs no introduction. He is the master of so many musical universes: The Sakamoto whose work with Ymo and solo experimental productions shaped the future sounds of what would become electro and hip hop, an early pioneer of electronic music.

Musician Matthew Seligman, who is known for playing bass for David Bowie at his 1985 Live Aid performance and a founding member of the band Bruce Woolley & The Camera Club has died due to complications with coronavirus. He was 64.
Thomas Dolby, Seligman’s friend and fellow member of The Camera Club, had been posting updates about Seligman’s condition on Facebook. On the morning of April 17, he wrote that Selgman suffered a haemorrhagic stroke. “It is expected that he will not survive longer than 12/24 hours,” he wrote. “His ventilator will be gradually withdrawn until the inevitable end. I am so sad to have to bear this terrible news. I have loved him as a friend and a fellow musician for 40 years.”
Dolby said that Seligman had been on a ventilator and in an induced coma due to coronavirus for two weeks at St George’s London. Later on Friday afternoon, Dolby wrote on Facebook: “Matthew’s gone.”
Seligman was a figure in the new wave music scene of the ’80s. He was a member of The Soft Boys and The Thompson Twins and The Dolphin Brothers. In addition to playing for Bowie at Live Aid, he also played bass on the soundtrack for Bowie’s 1986 fantasy pic Labyrinth.
On Sunday, Dolby helped organize a live online streaming tribute for Seligman on YouTube. Dolby also launched the Matthew Seligman Tribute Fund for the late musician where 100% of the funds will help Seligman’s family.

Everything's just ducky now that a 3-cd re-release of the excellent score and songs from Howard the Duck is on the way.
We all have grudges that we hold onto throughout our lives. Some are valid, like family disputes or relationship betrayals, while others are about trivial things that have taken on a conflated importance in our minds as time passes. I'm not sure which category this falls into, but I'm still pissed at my brother for taping over my Howard the Duck soundtrack in the early '90s. You see, I was on board with the film version of Marvel Comics' maladjusted mallard from the start. Seeing the movie with my father is one of my prized childhood memories. I loved the weird tonal shifts and how bizarre the events unfolding on screen were. But more than anything, I was obsessed with the film's music.

Thomas Dolby is best known for hits like “She Blinded Me With Science” and “Hyperactive” that earned him five Grammy nominations. But since 2014 he’s been lecturing to students at Baltimore’s John Hopkins University as a professor and, as of this fall, director of the Peabody Institute’s Music for New Media program — a position that allows him to extol one of his great loves: film music. Before turning to academia, he did his own movie and videogame scoring over the years, for projects directed or produced by Ken Russell, Barry Levinson, George Lucas and Steven Spielberg.
For Variety, Dolby agreed to write a guest column analyzing this year’s Oscar race in both the song and score categories. A spoiler: The British pop expat turns out to be a big fan of both African talking drums and cowboy ballads.

Scream Factory sent Mike and myself a bunch of B-Movie horror and science fiction titles and we're covering them all here under the moniker of B-Movie Christmas. Forgotten body horror Brain Dead starring Bill Pulman and Bill Paxton, anyone? Surprisingly compelling early 70s apocalyptic sci-fi Colossus the Forbin Project? Nearly lost William Castle thriller The Night Walker? Early 90s vampire movie Rockula featuring an undead teen desperate to woo and rock alongside his mom, played by Toni Basil of "Mickey" fame, and Thomas Dolby as the film's villain? Other films here include the fantastic Amicus 70s horror anthology The House That Dripped Blood, the Joseph Stefano penned Eye of the Cat, the Curtis Harrington shocker Games starring Simone Signoret, The Four...

Why do we respond to some filmmakers and not others?
I’m a pretty film literate guy, so I’ve seen my share of both classics and avant-garde movies and understand both the films that influenced them and those on which they had a big influence. I don’t mind being challenged or taken outside of my comfort zone. But the older I get and the more movies I see, the more I resign myself to the notion that I like what I like and that I shouldn’t try to fight those feelings in the interest of appearing “highbrow.” If it comes down to a classy mess or good trash, I’ll take the good trash any day.
This brings me to the two newest Blu-ray releases from Vestron Video’s Collector’s Series line: Ken Russell’s 1986 effort Gothic and the 1990 sci-fi actioner Class of 1999, written and directed by Mark L. Lester.

January’s genre-related home entertainment releases are ending on a somewhat quiet note, as there are only seven titles making their arrival this week. That being said, this cinematic septet of Blu-rays and DVDs make for a truly fantastic assortment of films, including the Vestron Video Collector’s Series editions of both Class of 1999 and Gothic, as well as stunning special editions for both Re-Animator and the original The Hills Have Eyes.
Other notable movies heading home on January 30th are Hack-o-Lantern, Lucifer’s Women, and Tyler Perry’s Boo 2! A Madea Halloween.
Class of 1999: Vestron Video Collector’s Series (Lionsgate, Blu-ray)
Robots who have been programmed to teach and discipline students in a violence-prone school turn homicidal, and the students must fight back to save their lives.

What if the events that inspired Frankenstein's monster were more horrifying than the monster itself? He’s known as one of the industry’s most talented musicians. But on Saturday, The Roots and Tonight Show drummer Questlove traded in the arts to preach about the importance of science at the March for Science in Washington, D.C.
Co-hosting the Earth Day event, the 46-year-old musician and multi-instrumentalist (né Ahmir Khalib Thompson) spoke out against the new presidential administration’s reliance on “alternative facts” — saying that science should belong to the masses and that making it accessible to people is now more important than ever.

NBA star Kyrie Irving made headlines last week when he revealed that he believes that the world was flat, and surprisingly he’s not the only famous person who doesn’t believe the globe is … well, a globe.
Over NBA All-Star weekend, Irving’s comments became a hot topic of conversation, and even resulted in some gentle ribbing from fellow Cleveland Cavaliers player LeBron James. While Irving later said he found the reaction to his flat-Earth theory “hilarious,” he also said that his opinion on the shape of the world we live in shouldn’t really matter to other people.

Do the work. We heard that a lot in this episode, and it not only means something to the folks on the show.
This show demands that the audience to do the work as well, since it's so damned hard to follow at times!
At the beginning of Legion Season 1 Episode 2, we see David being taken by boat to the well hidden, idyllic Summerland camp, where Melanie Bird and her crew attempt to fix David.
The tone of this one is much different than the wild, visually stunning Legion Season 1 Episode 1 premiere, but it's just as trippy in it's own way.
Things move slower, and this episode has a more dream-like quality: less frenetic, at least at the beginning.
The exposition is helpful since Melanie lays out what the deal is in a pretty straightforward manner.
Melanie: David, your whole life people told you that were sick. What if...

Who doesn't like a Star Trek: Tng episode about Geordi Laforge's love life? Er... James' weekly season four look-backs continue...
This review contains spoilers.
4.16 Galaxy's Child
The Enterprise welcomes aboard Dr. Leah Brahms, an engine specialist who helped design the Enterprise’s engines. Geordi is looking forward to meeting her, mainly because in the previous season he fell in love with a hologram version of her. Clearly, none of this can go wrong.
But somehow, it goes wrong. Brahms is uninterested in Geordi’s personal interest in her and cares more about negging his engineering modifications. How can this be?
Meanwhile, the Enterprise has found a weird space-fish in orbit around a nearby planet. Since they’re ahead of schedule, they decide to check it out (would they have ignored it if they weren’t? “Captain, there’s some new life over there, should we seek it out?” “No Data,...

We take a look back at how Universal promoted one of the first Marvel movies...Howard the Duck.
One might say that Howard the Duck is one of the most (unfairly) maligned films of the 1980s. As something of a Duckologist myself, I'd like to point out that the film is definitely stranger and funnier than you probably remember.
So why was it such a bomb?
Well, its flirtation with beastiality aside, I think one of the main reasons Howard the Duck flopped when it was released back on August 1, 1986, was that the marketing campaign was terrible.
Let's take a look...
The first look audiences were given of the film is this bizarre teaser in which Lea Thompson's Beverly Switzler character coos about wanting to fornicate with a waterfowl. By judging the movie on this footage alone, you'd be forgiven if you thought that Howard the...

As arguably the most innately talented figure to emerge during the synth-pop explosion of the mid-‘80s, Thomas Dolby was ahead of his time in plenty of technological regards. So the news that he was centering a tour around a film he’s made, The Invisible Lighthouse, suggested that he might be planning to blind us with multi-media science. But, light rigs and sophisticated keyboard triggers aside, the show he brought to the Masonic Lodge at Hollywood Forever Cemetery for two shows on Friday night was just a little bit closer to a guy nostalgically narrating his home movies

Now, take a deep breath because, according to creator Vince Gilligan, who jumped on the phone with me this morning, you’re going to need all your strength to keep it together for those installments.
No spoilers here but we did talk about the series as a whole, the return of Walt’s cancer, Todd’s role since he came on the scene late in the game and, of course, the Saul Goodman spinoff.

Easter Film Hop & Midsummer Night Screen, London
No, there's nothing wrong with your calendar. This was supposed to happen at Easter, but being outdoors and in Britain, it was inevitably rained, hailed and snowed well and truly off. So here it is again: three days of dance-related screenings in a converted Shoreditch car park, with the emphasis on standing up and shakin' rather than sitting down and nodding. On Friday it's a "concert-style" screening of Prince's mighty Purple Rain, including I Would Die 4 U, When Doves Cry and Let's Go Crazy, followed by a sing-along Grease, and a dance-along version of Dirty Dancing next weekend. There will be dance trainers on hand, street food and cocktails, and "fancy dress is encouraged but not enforced".

I’ve found V/H/S to be a divisive movie among my friends. Each of them has a different take on the various segments, but they all agree that Radio Silence’s short – the final one, 10/31/98, with the group of friends who unintentionally find themselves in a strange house – is the best of the bunch.
So, my friends, and probably most of you reading this right now are going to be stoked to hear that the foursome, made up of Tyler Gillett, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, Chad Villella and Justin Martinez, is attached to a new horror project at Fox. Details are limited, but we do know that it will be found footage, written by Lindsay Devlin and produced by John Davis (who produced among many other titles, Predator). The story is described as “being female-driven and having horror elements.”
Stay tuned for more to come. In the meantime, I'm going...

Directed by Ken Russell
UK, 1986
Natasha Richardson (in her leading role debut) plays Mary Godwin, later Mary Shelley, in Ken Russell’s fictionalised take on the inception of both her classic novel Frankenstein and John Polidori’s The Vampyre. It is based on the Shelleys’ visit with Lord Byron at Villa Diodati, on the shores of Lake Geneva, where there was a famous challenge among the collected guests to write a horror story; this event was notably portrayed on film in the opening of James Whale’s The Bride of Frankenstein. Befitting of his stylistic trademarks, Russell’s version of events is a demented concoction of sex, hysteria, fear and hallucinatory dreamscapes.
One summer evening in 1816, Percy Shelley (Julian Sands) and Mary arrive by boat at the lakeside estate of Lord Byron (Gabriel Byrne), with Mary’s cousin Claire (Miriam Cyr) in tow, who is...

The Korean pop hit "Gangnam Style" has become a viral smash and brought a lot of attention to Psy, the singer of the dance hit ditty.
But only time will tell whether Psy can put together a string of other hits like Elvis, The Beatles or Rihanna -- or whether he becomes the latest musician to be tagged with the label "one-hit wonder."
Pop culture historian Brent Mann admitted he's no psychic, but bet that Psy will soon join Los Del Rio, Kyu Sakamoto and the Baja Men on the list of great one-hit wonders.
"It's pretty fascinating, but that's precisely what this is," Mann, author of the 2003 book "99 Red Balloons And 100 Other All-Time Great One-Hit Wonders," told The Huffington Post.
Even if Psy never has another hit, his song is sure to be remembered in the future -- especially on Sept. 25, semi-officially celebrated as "National One-Hit Wonder Day" by music fans across America.
