The Artistic Director of the International Film Festival Rotterdam since 2008, Rutger Wolfson had begun work on this year’s edition of the festival, the 43rd, when fate interceded. In November, Wolfson was hospitalized with a rare autoimmune disease. (Happily, he is expected to make a full recovery.) With the festival two months away from its starting date, Mart Dominicus — a lecturer at the Netherlands Film Academy, a screenplay and editing coach, and a member of the festival’s Supervisory Board since 2010 — stepped in to become Artistic Director for this year’s festival. The International Film Festival Rotterdam (Iffr) has used film to reflect on European culture, politics and identity.
The State Of Europe programme at this year’s Iffr was the brainchild of artistic director Rutger Wolfson.
In advance of the European elections, he wanted the festival to reflect on European culture, politics and identity.
As he wrote: ‘The historical project of the European unification has lost much of its lustre. Peace and prosperity, the two main forces that have driven Europe, are still relevant today but feel worn out.
“Politicians seem unable to convey a convincing alternative future perspective and many citizens are angry, disillusioned or have lost interest completely.”
Rising debt, the spectre of nationalism, the colonial legacy and the tension between EU Member states are all factors in the modern Europe.
For his programmers, this huge subject initially seemed daunting – a project for historians and politicians from the EU’s 28 member states, perhaps, but not...

Qissa, directed by Anup Singh, will open the 43rd International Film Festival Rotterdam on January 22, 2014. It has been chosen as the opening film to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Hubert Bals Fund (Hbf) of the festival.
To date, the Fund has supported more than a thousand film projects worldwide, including Qissa which received the Hubert Bals Fund for Script & Project Development in 2004. The film was made with further support from the Netherlands Film Fund and was co-produced by Dutch company Augustus Film.
Mart Dominicus, artistic director of International Film Festival Rotterdam, said: ’Although the film is set in 1947, during a turbulent period in Indian history, the kernel of the story is extremely recognisable and contemporary. The father’s passionate desire for a male heir causes deep suffering within the community. Qissa is a poignant, universal story of ordinary people, more tragic than moralising. In spite of its rich – often exuberant – narrative style,...

The 43rd International Film Festival Rotterdam (Iffr) is to open with the European premiere of Indian drama Qissa, celebrating 25 years of the Hubert Bals Fund (Hbf).
Qissa, directed by Anup Singh, is one of more than a thousand film projects supported by the Hbf since its inception in 1989.
The fund contributed to the script development of the film ten years ago and will come full circle when it officially opens the festival on Jan 22. Iffr runs to Feb 2.
The film stars Irrfan Khan, best known outside of India for his roles in Life of Pi, Slumdog Millionaire and The Lunchbox, alongside young Bengali talent Tillotama Shome.
Set amidst the ethnic cleansing and general chaos that accompanied India’s partition in 1947, the drama stars Khan as a Sikh attempting to forge a new life for his family while keeping their true identities a secret from their community.
The Punjabi-language film, which debuted at Toronto in September, is co-produced...
