Superman: The Animated Series is widely credited for popularising Superman among a wider audience. The series, which aired from 1996 to 2000, smoothly modernized the character as the animated series allowed the creators to explore different ideas. However, in one particular episode, they went too far.
Superman: The Animated Series
The two-part “Little Girl Lost” episodes from season 3 of the show initially had a very different setting, which would be dark for a show that aired on Kids’ WB. Writer Evan Dorkin once explained how the second half was changed at the last minute because the episode had a Nazi concentration camp-style setting.
In the two-part episode, Granny Goodness transforms innocent teenagers into soulless Parademons. Dorkin explained that one of the producers opposed this idea and they had to change the whole plot.

All the most interesting people have the least-likely careers. (Says the man who started out as a Sf editor and somehow ended up doing content marketing for corporate lawyers.) Evan Dorkin was a fiery young cartoonist in the ’80s and 90s when I discovered his work, writing and drawing id-fueled scrawls like Milk & Cheese and The Eltingville Club . But somehow, along the way, his modern comics career is mostly about writing vaguely Lovecraftian-flavored fantasy/horror adventure stories for other artists to draw.
Like Beasts of Burden or Calla Cthulhu – or like this book: Blackwood , written by Dorkin with art by wife-and-husband team Veronica and Andy Fish.
Blackwood College seems to be just another mid-rank private learning institution, though it seems like all of their fields of study are specialized cases of anthropology with various cultural, occult, or religious bends. It’s not that simple, of course: Blackwood has Deep Secrets.

It’s an odd thing: while actually reading a Beasts of Burden book, it’s entirely plausible – my disbelief is reasonably suspended. But both before and afterward

, in retrospect, it all seems silly and I struggle to write about it in a non-dismissive way.
If that tone sneaks in, I don’t really mean it. But there is something inherently goofy about the whole series, and I do have to acknowledge that.
As seen previously in the original Beasts of Burden (later subtitled “Animal Rites,” har de har har), and seen later in the follow-up series Wise Dogs and Eldrich Men , all animals can talk to each other and some animals have magical skills and abilities.
I don’t know if series creator Evan Dorkin meant it this way, but domesticated animals (dogs and cats so far) are on the side of Good, and wild animals are on...

Bill & Ted Face the Music is Out Now! Excellent! (Loud screeching guitar solo). And really, the dim time-traveling duo have returned just when we need them the most. Since first making their debut in the 1989 sleeper hit Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure, these characters — portrayed with glee by Alex Winter and Keanu Reeves — have become that unique thing: A sci-fi/comedy franchise that somehow is both a cult sensation and a mainstream success. Following the unexpected success of the first film, the sequel Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey was released in the summer of 1991. Fans expecting more of the same were instead treated to a rumination on life and death that featured everything from aliens to evil robot doppelgangers of our leads. But the inventiveness of Bill and Ted creators Chris Matheson and Ed Solomon worked against him, and the film went underappreciated during its original run.

Following hot on the heels of the rather fantastic Sub-Mariner Snapshot issue, Namor of course being one of the launch characters of Timely Comics Golden Age books, we move on to the Fantastic Four. Why them? Well, the Fantastic Four were pretty much the launch characters of the Silver Age of comic books. Those first 100 issues of Fantastic Four probably had more influence on modern comic books, and on future creators in the industry, than pretty much any other run on any book. Rather like Superman over at DC, their popularity has ebbed and flowed down the years, but not their place in comic book history. That is set in stone. After 67 years, hundreds of issues, a spinoff sketch comedy series and countless imitators, Mad Magazine as it has been known since 1952 is coming to an end, according to the magazine’s former editor, Allie Goertz.

“While there will be no new material after issue #10, @MADmagazine is not gone,” Goertz continued. “I find it deeply sad to learn that there will be no new content, but knowing history repeats itself, I have no doubt that the vintage pieces will be highly (if not tragically) relevant.”

There are days when I think that Evan Dorkin exists so I can be regularly reminded that I’m not the most cynical, negative person in the world. But most days I manage not to be that solipsistic.
Dorkin is probably the most cynical, negative person in comics — I could remove the “probably” if I limited that to creators.
He’s best-known for creating Milk and Cheese, the reductio ad absurdum of ’90s hyper-violent comics heroes, but he’s done a lot of other work over the years, starting with his early Pirate Corp$! ska-fuled adventure stories in the ’80s and running through a lot of projects in comics and animation.
One of the spines of that long career has been his occasional solo comics series Dork, from the company that was once named Slave Labor. Dork is a big new collection of the stories from the comic of the same name,...

As you might be able to tell from the year in the post title, I’ve gotten more than a little lackadaisical about keeping up with this annual series of the best in comics created by North Americans. (I reviewed 2006 at the beginning of 2007, 2007 later in 2007, 2008 in 2008, 2009 in 2009, 2010 in 2011 after the next book was published, 2011 in 2012, 2012 in 2013, 2014 in 2014, and have so far missed 2015, 2016, and 2017. If it were still my job to keep up with things being published, I would probably be deeply ashamed of myself — but it hasn’t been for a decade now, so I’m not.)
But I’m still interested in good comics, as always. So here I finally am with the Jeff Smith-edited The Best American Comics 2013 , only four and a half years after it was published and six-and-a-half to seven-and-a-half years after the work in it originally appeared.

There’s a new digital comics platform on the horizon, and it looks fantastic in its simplicity. The new mobile comics platform, coming to us in early 2016, is called Stela (pronounced “Steela”). It is a both an app and a publisher, being a platform optimized for smartphones that offers exclusive original content by award-winning writers and illustrators, including Evan Dorkin, Sarah Dyer, Joe Casey, Irene Koh, Brian Wood, Ron Wimberly, Stuart Moore, and many more.
The founders of Stela come from the comics, gaming, and mobile gaming industries; and its leadership includes Creative Director and Editor-in-Chief Ryan Yount, and Senior Editor Jim Gibbons (formerly of Dark Horse Comics). Stela intends to bring new content to the app every weekday, and will be available via subscription.

Artist/writer Jill Thompson has one of the most idiosyncratic bodies of work in contemporary comics ranging from important arcs on legendary comics series The Sandman and The Invisibles to more traditional superhero work like a run on Wonder Woman as well her own creator owned comic/children’s book/film series Scary Godmother. She has drawn everything from dying stripper gods to Romantic poets, Batman to Bart Simpson and even an all animal cast in her Eisner winning Dark Horse series Beasts of Burden with writer Evan Dorkin. She is also one of the few creators not named Neil Gaiman allowed to write The Endless in her Li’l Endless and Death stories.
But before she was winning awards and one of DC/Vertigo’s rising stars, Jill Thompson was a graduate of American Academy of Art in Chicago and doing art for several of the (now defunct) indie publishers of the late 1980s.

In recent years, comics conventions have become less about the comics creators, who crafted (and continue to craft) the characters beloved by pop culture and more about celebrity guests. Yes, it is fun to get a picture made with your favorite Star Trek captain or Doctor Who companion, but from my personal experience as well as that of con-goers and the crowded nature of big shows like San Diego and New York Comic Con, it seems like the comics have been pushed aside for “geek culture” celebrities. Some conventions might as well take out the “comic” in “comic con”. However, some shows continue to put comics and creators first, and one of them is East Coast Comicon.
East Coast Comicon began as Asbury Park Comic Con and was held in 2012 at a converted bowling alley/rock club in Asbury Park, NJ. It was founded by independent comics creator Cliff Galbraith...

Dark Horse, the elder statesman of independent comics, continues to show no signs of slowing down during this year’s San Diego Comic Con. Even though Marvel now holds the rights to Star Wars, its biggest licensed comics property, Dark Horse struck back by announcing a several creator owned titles in different genres as well as an expansion to the Mignolaverse and a sequel to one of the most beloved novels of the past century. Dark Horse also won some Eisners in a wide variety of categories showing the company’s comics appeal to many types of readers from kids to people who wouldn’t normally read comics.

Unlike my esteemed colleague Jen Krueger, I watched the Academy Awards all the way through on Sunday (although at the same time I was also fixing dinner, playing fetch with my cat, and incessantly checking my e-mails, and then later trying to find a position in bed so I could see but still be horizontal).
I like to watch award shows for different reasons than most people, at least if I believe the Internets. All those technical awards that everybody hates? Those are my favorites. I love to see someone who is not a celebrity recognized for his or her work. I love to see them get their moment literally in the spotlight. I imagine their mothers at home, kvelling.

As Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure turns 25, Seb takes a look back at the duo's outings...
There’s an urban legend that posits that the execrable 1996 Pauly Shore vehicle Bio-Dome was originally written as a third Bill & Ted film, before being turned down by Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter and so repurposed with new characters. The rumour has been heavily debunked by many, including Winter himself; but frankly, it says a lot about a person if they believe it ever might have been true in the first place. Specifically, what it says is that that person hasn’t watched, or paid attention to, either of the Bill & Ted films.
What the rumour does play to is a range of assumptions about Bill and Ted: that they’re stoners, or slackers, or surfer dudes. That they’re completely lame-brained idiots who fail to understand anything about the world around them,...

Plans still include a Fifty Shades of Grey adaptation, though they aren't going to force it into production, but rather plan appropriately because he doesn't "believe the second or third film would have benefited from that strategy." Snow White and the Huntsman 2 is still in the works and it will focus on both Kristen Stewart's Snow and Chris Hemsworth's Huntsman, though director Rupert Sanders is not expected to return. Shane Acker, the director of the CG animated action film 9, is set to direct a new untitled CG animated movie based on the Dark Horse Comics series Beasts of Burden, which was written by Evan Dorkin and illustrated by Jill Thompson. It's a supernatural story that revolves around dogs.
Even though 9 was a little rough around the edges I still enjoyed the movie, and I've been looking forward to seeing what Acker would end up doing next because he's a pretty talented guy. This seems like a solid project for him to take on, and I hope it turns out to be a good flick. The movie is being produced by Reel FX, and the script is being worked on by Darren Lemke (Turbo, Shrek Forever After).

It's been more than three years since Shane Acker's directorial debut, the animated film 9, arrived in theaters, but finally the filmmaker has found his next project. Reel FX has hired Acker to helm Beasts of Burden, a brand new animated film that will be based on the Dark Horse comic series by Evan Dorkin and artist Jill Thompson. The story in the film is set in a small town called Burden Hill where all kinds of supernatural strangeness regularly occurs. The protectors of the town and its inhabitants are a group of five dogs named Ace, Rex, Jack, Whitey, and Pugsley as well as a cat named Orphan. The characters first appeared in The Dark Horse Book of Hauntings, which was first released in August 2003. Variety, which reported the news of Acker's hiring, says that writer Darren Lemke (Jack The Giant Slayer, Shrek Forever After) will be handling screenwriting duties,...

Good news for fans of Shane Acker, director of the acclaimed animated film 9 from a few years back, he's lined up another animation project. Deadline/Variety report that Reel FX Creative Studios (of Open Season 2 & 3, Cirque du Soleil: Worlds Away, Turkeys) has signed on Shane Acker to direct their new CG animated feature Beasts Of Burden, based on the Dark Horse comics of the same name. The comics are about a team of investigative animals — five dogs and a cat named Orphan. Ever since first seeing 9 I've been keeping a close watch on Acker, who has lined up a few projects, none of which have hit the screen yet. Beasts of Burden is a Dark Horse Comics team of animals, created by writer Evan Dorkin and artist Jill Thompson, that investigate different paranormal events that occur in their small neighborhood of Burden Hill. The screenplay for the big screen...

Shane Acker is returning to the realm of animated film. The "9" director will next tackle the CG animated feature "Beasts of Burden," based on the Dark Horse Comics series of the same name.
Reel FX announced the partnership, and says that "Turbo" scribe Darren Lemke is writing the script for the movie. Evan Dorkin and Jill Thompson wrote the comic books, which tell the story of a group of animals that look into various paranormal events that happen in their Burden Hill neighborhood. Sounds like a story that's right up Acker's alley.
The central characters of "Beasts of Burden" are five dogs named Whitey, Jack, Red, Ace and Pugsley and a cat named Orphan. The characters first appeared in 2003 in "The Dark Horse Book of Haunting," and have had their own standalone graphic novels since.

Though it was picked up back in 2011 for Shrek/Narnia man Andrew Adamson to produce via his company, the adaptation of Dark Horse Comics’ tale Beasts Of Burden has faced a typically slow slog through development. Things are looking a little more hopeful now, however, as 9 director Shane Acker is now on board to direct the movie.Created by Evan Dorkin and Jill Thompson for Dark Horse’s Book Of Hauntings, Witchcraft, The Dead And Monsters, the story takes place in the small community of Burden Hill, wracked with supernatural weirdness.Things get so strange that a group of dogs and a cat band together to investigate what’s happening, in order to keep their human friends safe and, presumably, to pee on a ghost or two. Jack The Giant Killer’s Darren Lemke is currently at work on the film version, which doesn’t have a name for now.

Dark Horse Comics Editor-in-Chief Scott Allie had an in-depth chat with the Eisner Award-winning writer/artist David Lapham on a wide range of topics including his adaptation of The Strain, the upcoming Ferals, the ups and downs of the comics world, blowing off steam on Twitter, and lots more.
Scott Allie: After breaking into superhero comics, you really made a name for yourself with Stray Bullets, which did two things: It (1) established you as a brilliant crime cartoonist and (2) marked a pinnacle of self-publishing, creator-owned success. Lately you've been a lot busier on licensed books. What's different about the industry now, as opposed to the late Nineties?
David Lapham: Thanks! I'll start by talking about the mid-Nineties, which is when we started Stray Bullets, and the movement of self-publishing, small press, and just independent-driven comics. For the record, I personally was never a self-publisher. Maria, my wife and business partner,...

Pretty much the comic book Oscars, the 2012 nominations for the Eisner awards have been announced. There is quite are large showing from Marvel in the superhero department, not so much from DC. Surprising, considering the company’s high profile New 52 relaunch. Save for Jeff Lemire’s nomination for Best Writer, most of DC’s nomination are pre-relaunch, or from their Vertigo imprint which has been left untouched by the New 52. The nominations are usually as controversial as the Oscars, with books and whole companies being left out, much to fans, sometimes, anger and confusion.

I don’t know about you guys, but I could use a laugh. One would think comics would be a great place to look for laughs, since, you know, they’re called “comics.”
And yet…
But I don’t want to bitch and moan about stuff that’s not funny. I’d rather celebrate what is. Different people find different things amusing, but I suspect that at least one thing on this list will do it for you.
Here, for your entertainment pleasure and in no particular order, are some really funny books, done in the graphic novel format.
Kyle Baker is one of my favorite humans. There isn’t a book he’s done that doesn’t thrill me. The Cowboy Wally Show made me laugh so hard I couldn’t breathe. And if you want to know how he does it, you could do worse than track down...

Before I get to the box that came today, I have to thank Glenn Hauman, who was responsible for several big boxes of stuff that showed up semi-mysteriously yesterday, while I was at work. He was trying to get me started on rebuilding the collection that the flood destroyed, and it was one of the nicest things that anyone has ever done for me. (I haven’t really had a chance to see what’s there yet — I’ll probably have to wait until I have shelves again, and unload directly onto them to go through it all.) I’m not sure where all of it came from, so thanks to Glenn, and thanks to anyone else who was responsible.
But today a box came in from Midtown Comics, which used to be my local when I worked in the city, and which has been e-mailing me about their deals incessantly in recent weeks.
