It’s been over 18 months since we first shared the news of Sydney Sweeney’s plans to produce and star in a reboot of Roger Vadim’s cult 1968 sci-fi Barbarella. Since then, Sweeney’s star has risen and risen, with the Euphoria sensation releasing a slew of films including rom-com Anyone But You, erotic thriller The Voyeurs, and nunsploitation flick Immaculate, leaving ol’ Barb on the back burner. But now it looks like Sweeney has found the right stuff to finally get the project off the ground. The Wright stuff, in fact.
According to Deadline, none other than Cornetto Trilogy mastermind Edgar Wright is in talks to helm the remake. Reportedly Wright has been circling the film for some time, meeting with Sweeney shortly after the remake was announced and expressing an interest in developing the project in a directorial capacity. And whilst both prospective director and star are exceptionally...

A fun game those of legal drinking age can play while watching Roger Vadim's surreal/sexy 1968 Eurotrash space romp "Barbarella": take a drink every time Barbarella (Jane Fonda) changes costumes. One will be blindingly intoxicated by the 20-minute mark. "Barbarella" takes place in the distant future wherein the President of Earth (Claude Dauphin) has tasked the title heroine, a freelance space captain, to locate and retrieve Durand-Durand (Milo O'Shea) a scientist who has invented the positronic ray, a weapon of massive destructive power. Barbarella must trek through a picaresque adventure, stopping to be savaged by killer dolls, locked into an orgasm machine (!), and to befriend a friendly angel (John Philip Law). The film was based on the bawdy 1966 French comic by Jean-Claude Forest.

Ministry’s Al Jourgensen Despised His Debut Album. Forty Years Later, He’s Finally Playing the Songs
It took a conspiracy to get Ministry frontman Al Jourgensen to come around to his band’s debut album, the proudly commercial, synth-pop juggernaut With Sympathy. The vocalist has spent the past four decades separating himself from the LP, since he alleges his label at the time, Arista, and its founder, Clive Davis, pressured him into constructing a surefire Billboard hit. He has felt so embarrassed by the whole thing that he left the label and has charged fans $1,000 just for him to autograph copies of the record. Now for the first time in decades,...

Robinne Lee, the author of The Idea of You, regrets initially stating that the story was inspired by Harry Styles.
In a new interview, Lee explains why the fictional British boy band member, Hayes Campbell, was not just inspired by the former One Direction member after many have compared it to writing fan fiction.
“I don’t consider it fan fiction at all,” Lee said in an interview with EW. “Harry was one of multiple people who went into creating Hayes Campbell — he was the only one in a British boy band that was current at the time, I guess, and so that’s what people have latched onto. It’s unfortunate because it’s being used as clickbait, and when I’m writing for Hayes, I’m not picturing Harry Styles.”
Lee said that the fictional character, played by Nicholas Galitzine in the Prime Video film, us a combination of many real-life people.

The new movie The Idea of You is based on the best-selling book by Robinne Lee and it has often been considered to be “Harry Styles fan fiction,” something that she doesn’t feel is an accurate way to describe her work.
The Idea of You tells the story of a 40-year-old single mom who starts a romance with the 24-year-old lead singer of a popular boy band.
Robinne once mentioned that she drew inspiration from Harry Styles for lead character Hayes Campbell, which led to fans labeling the book as fan fiction.
Now, Robinne explains why she regrets ever bringing up the Harry inspiration.

More than 250 artists, including Billie Eilish, Green Day, Sia and Cyndi Lauper, signed a letter Thursday urging the Senate Commerce Committee to support a bill that would reform the ticketing system for live events.
The Fans First Act, which was initially introduced in December by Sens. John Cornyn, Amy Klobuchar, Marsha Blackburn, Peter Welch, Roger Wicker and Ben Ray Lujan, aims to address flaws in the current live event ticketing system. The bill hopes to increase transparency in ticket sales, protect consumers from fake or overpriced tickets, and hold those who engage in illegal ticket sale practices accountable.
“As artists and members of the music community, we rely on touring for our livelihood, and we value music fans above all else,” the letter said in part. “We are joining together to say that the current system is broken: predatory resellers and secondary platforms engage in deceptive ticketing practices to inflate...

Steve Harley, singer for the British glam rock act Cockney Rebel and their 1975 hit “Make Me Smile (Come Up and See Me),” has died at the age of 73.
Harley’s family confirmed his death in Suffolk, England Sunday in a statement (via The Guardian), “We are devastated to announce that our wonderful husband and father has passed away peacefully at home, with his family by his side. The birdsong from his woodland that he loved so much was singing for him. His home has been filled with the sounds and laughter of his four grandchildren.

Shaun and his best mate Ed are in trouble. They’ve discovered two zombies in their garden, and the lumbering flesh-eaters show no signs of stopping. However, Shaun and Ed have found one way of slowing the approach: throwing records.
And so, as the two zombies grow closer, Ed and Shaun rustle through the latter’s collection. “Sign o’ the Times … Purple Rain,” Ed suggests as projectiles, only to have Shaun tell him no. That is until Ed reaches a low point in Prince’s discography, the Batman soundtrack. “Throw it,” Shaun commands, striking a blow against the living dead.
The above scene is just one instance of the humor and horror that director Edgar Wright and his co-writer Simon Pegg bring to the RomZomCom Shaun of the Dead, released twenty years ago. Shaun (Pegg) and Ed (Nick Frost) spend a lot of time discussing their pop-cultural interests, even in the most dire situations.

Valerie June, an expert at covers, takes on latter-day Duran Duran with her very own rendition of “Ordinary World.”
While many artists covering songs tend to stay true to the original, June’s version is more stripped-down, her stark vocals contorting around the rhythm to emphasize the meaning of the Nineties anthem: Persisting through darkness.
Given the current state of the world, June’s timing of the cover is no coincidence. “With modern times often full of heaviness and darkness, how do we find the strength to survive and grow?...

Dolly Parton isn’t done rocking yet. After sharing her new album Rockstar last week, our November cover star has returned with two new bonus tracks: Her rendition of the Eddie Money’s “Two Tickets to Paradise,” plus a new version of her classic “Jolene” featuring Måneskin.
The Måneskin-assisted version of “Jolene” is available exclusively with the digital download version of Rockstar on Parton’s website, though the country icon did share a preview of the duet on Instagram. It sounds like the new recording stays fairly faithful to the original, with Måneskin’s Damiano David taking on co-lead vocals with Parton.
“Jolene” appears on the deluxe edition of Rockstar, which also features guest features from Sting, Steve Perry, Joan Jett, Mick Fleetwood, Pat Benatar, Brandi Carlile, and many, many more. See a preview clip of Måneskin’s take on “Jolene” below.

Duran Duran are getting into the Halloween spirit with Danse Macabre, a witchy new album featuring a mix of new songs and covers of classics by Billie Eilish, Talking Heads, and more. Check it out below via Apple Music or Spotify.
The new wave legends’ 16th studio album was inspired by a “crazy” Halloween show Duran Duran put on last year. Rather than going full “Bela Lugosi’s Dead,” however, Danse Macabre doesn’t take itself too seriously. “It’s supposed to be fun!” singer Simon Le Bon explained in a statement.
That said, original compositions like its title track — which we named Song of the Week — coexist alongside covers of Billie Eilish’s “Bury a Friend,” Talking Heads’ “Psycho Killer,” and The Rolling Stones’ “Paint It Black.” The project also features some special guests, including former guitarist Andy Taylor and legendary artist Nile Rodgers on the song “Black Moonlight.

The legendary Nile Rodgers brought a whole lot of funk to the NPR office for the latest iteration of their Tiny Desk Concert series.
Rodgers’ six-song setlist serves as a useful reminder of just how ubiquitous his music is. He and his Chic bandmates kicked things off with their 1978 disco classic “Le Freak,” the whoops and hollers of the vocalists meshing with those from the equally-energized audience.
“Obviously, every song we’re gonna play today is a song I wrote,” Rodgers said between songs with a smile, laughing off the braggadocio of the statement. But bragging is absolutely called for when you’ve written tunes like Diana Ross’ “I’m Coming Out,” Sister Sledge’s “We Are Family,” and Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky,” all of which Rodgers also performed at the Tiny Desk.

In a press release, De Angelis said that Talking Heads’ Tina Weymouth was one of her biggest influences when she began playing bass. Meanwhile, Duran Duran bassist John Taylor lauded De Angelis as “probably the most important electric bassist out there right now.” He recalled: He continued: “I met a couple of the guys from Måneskin at a party and they said, ‘you’ve got to meet our bass player.’ She’s such a dynamo! I was like ‘what inspired you?’ and Vic said, ‘Tina Weymouth.’ So when Psycho Killer made the cut for the album, I thought, ‘I’m gonna ask her if she’d like to have a bass-off!’”

While it doesn’t get too much attention today, John Lennon‘s “Instant Karma!” has some of the most interesting lyrics of the “Imagine” singer‘s career. John explained his feelings about karma as a concept. He also related “Instant Karma!” to a rough patch in his marriage to Yoko Ono. “Instant Karma!” became a big hit in the United States and the United Kingdom, and it appeared on an album with a bizarre name.
John Lennon’s ‘Instant Karma!’ was taking a ‘cosmic’ concept and bringing it down to earth
The book All We Are Saying: The Last Major Interview with John Lennon and Yoko Ono features an interview from 1980. In it, John discussed his feelings on a certain metaphysical concept. “It’s like what they say about karma,” he said. “If you don’t get it right in this lifetime, you have to come back and go through it again.

Duran Duran want to make you dance under the “Black Moonlight,” another spooky preview from their upcoming Halloween-themed album, Danse Macabre. Stream it below.
Thanks to a catchy riff from Nile Rodgers (and an assist from former member Andy Taylor), “Black Moonlight” is less ominous and gothic than the previous single (and Song of the Week) “Danse Macabre,” but the new track still has eerie synths and some playful lyrics about “dark magic” and dancing “under the dead of night.”
“Nile Rogers is a force of nature. When we get into a room, we start playing, and magic happens,” Duran Duran keyboardist Nick Rhodes said in a statement. “Nile always says that Chic is his first band, and Duran Duran is his second. Thematically, I personally prefer the moon to the sun. Simon took the idea and ran with it.”
Simon Le Bon added, “‘Black Moonlight’ is this classic Duran Duran-Nile Rodgers collaboration.

Duran Duran have shared their funky new song “Black Moonlight,” one of the band’s three originals from their upcoming Halloween-inspired, largely covers album Danse Macabre.
For the track, Duran Duran reunited with longtime collaborator Nile Rodgers, who previously produced the band’s 1986 LP Notorious, in addition to other contributions throughout the decades.
“‘Black Moonlight’ is this classic Duran Duran-Nile Rodgers collaboration,” Simon Le Bon said in a statement. “When Nile started playing his guitar in the studio, he really inspired everyone with his riff, and the song just kind of wrote itself.

Duran Duran guitarist Andy Taylor has shared his first solo album in over 30 years, Man’s a Wolf to Man. Stream it via Apple Music or Spotify below.
Taylor began writing Man’s a Wolf to Man in 2016 or 2017 — “the beginning of the chaos,” as he put it in a statement. The record was ultimately delayed by Covid-19, so in addition to addressing political unrest and a global pandemic, it was also influenced by the artist’s prostate cancer, which he learned during that time was terminal.
“Man’s a Wolf to Man is pretty apt now,” Taylor said. “Having lived there, had kids there, had an amazing career there, I know America very well. And when you watch the breakdown, and the extremes of it, how quickly people became vicious enemies.”
The artist continued, “[It’s] about how man is his own worst enemy and will behave like a pack of...

MTV has announced that Sean “Diddy” Combs will receive the honorary Global Icon Award. As described in the announcement, “the Global Icon Award, originally from MTV’s Europe Music Awards (EMAs), celebrates an artist or band whose unparalleled career and continued influence have achieved a unique level of global success in music and beyond.” He will accept the award and perform live during the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards set to air Tuesday night, September 12, at 8:00pm from New Jersey’s Prudential Center. This will be his first performance at the event since 2005.
Diddy’s career stretches back more than a quarter century. The first of his two past VMA victories came in 1997 when he claimed Best R&b Video for “I’ll Be Missing You” featuring Faith Evans and 112. That song and video were made as a tribute to The Notorious B.I.G., who was murdered earlier that year and...

Andy Taylor thought that Nov. 5, 2022 was going to be one of the greatest nights of his life. After years of waiting, Duran Duran were finally entering the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The guitarist had co-founded the band back in 1980 and co-wrote many of their biggest songs, including “Rio” and “Hungry Like the Wolf,” but he hadn’t shared a stage with them since 2006, when old tensions resurfaced during the creation of their aborted album Reportage and they parted ways.

Eight years ago in August, African pay-tv giant MultiChoice Group launched streaming service Showmax in South Africa. Since then, it has expanded to 44 countries in Sub-Saharan Africa, with a Showmax diaspora service also currently available in more than 30 international markets worldwide.
Showmax has made a name for itself with original content and not only caught the eye of people on the continent, but also those in London, Philadelphia and Hollywood. Earlier this year, MultiChoice and Comcast’s entertainment arm NBCUniversal and its London-based European pay-tv unit Sky struck a partnership that “will bring some of the world’s best content and technology to streaming customers” across sub-Saharan Africa “at a time when Africa is approaching an inflection point in terms of broadband connectivity and affordability.” The partners’ new Showmax group is 70 percent owned by MultiChoice and 30 percent owned by NBCUniversal. Taylor revealed that he was contacted by the Cancer Awareness Trust co-founder Prof. Sir Chris Evans about this new medicine. This occurred shortly after Taylor’s fellow band member Simon Le Bon revealed his diagnosis of stage four prostate cancer during Duran Duran’s induction to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame last year.

Founding Duran Duran member and guitarist Andy Taylor claims a new drug treatment is working in his battle with Stage 4 prostate cancer.
In a BBC interview, Taylor said the drug – Lutetium-177 – has extended his life “for five years.”
The 62-year-old Taylor first was diagnosed with the disease in 2018. He went public with the information last November.
After that, a scientist suggested nuclear medicine treatment with Lutetium-177, which reportedly targets cancer cells.
“It can’t see healthy cells,” Taylor told BBC News. He said his first round of treatments was six weeks ago. “It kills stage four cancer in your bones. And so what it’s effectively done is extend my life for five years.”
The drug received approval from the US Food and Drug Administration in March 2022 and has “proven to significantly improve prostate cancer survival rates and quality of life, as well as extend the time it takes for the disease to progress,...

It’s been nearly a year since Andy Taylor revealed that he has been fighting stage IV metastatic prostate cancer, and now, the Duran Duran guitarist is back with a positive update: thanks to a new “nuclear medicine,” he feels his life has been extended for five years.
The update came when Taylor appeared on BBC Breakfast on Friday, August 11th. Speaking with the show’s hosts, the 62-year-old explained that he was contacted by scientists after he went public with his cancer diagnosis (via a letter read at Duran Duran’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction). They took a “deep dive into [Taylor’s] genetic profile and the specific genomic mutations present in his cancer,” and ultimately recommended he try a medicine called Lutetium 177.

The first time Rolling Stone profiled Wham!, the shiniest, prettiest UK pop duo of their day, in 1985, the boys bristled when the reporter asked a common question: What exactly did Andrew Ridgeley do? George Michael said, “He just plays the guitar and has a good time.” Since Wham! records had practically no guitar, fans had to assume that Andrew was having a very good time. But Ridgeley was more diplomatic. He said, “My role is everything people don’t see, because they’re not in pop bands.”

Duran Duran launched their 2023 “Future Past North American Tour” at Napa Valley’s BottleRock Festival on Saturday, May 27th.
To kick off their headlining set, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame group quickly dispatched several of their biggest hits, including “Hungry Like the Wolf,” “Notorious,” and “A View to a Kill.” In a career-spanning sequence befitting the ethos behind their 2021 LP, Future Past, the band reached as far back as their 1981 debut single “Planet Earth,” while touching on key eras with tracks like 1984’s “The Reflex,” 1993’s “Ordinary World,” and their latest LP’s “Anniversary.”
The night also included the first live rendition of the Future Past duet “Give It All Up” with Tove Lo, who performed with the band and separately earlier in the day. Following 1981’s “Girls on Film” as the main set’s closer, the band returned with a double Rio encore of “Save a Prayer” and the iconic title track.

As if anticipation for Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” movie couldn’t be higher, soundtrack details for the film were announced on Thursday and this thing is stacked. In addition to the previously announced Dua Lipa, the soundtrack will also feature songs by Lizzo, Nicki Minaj, Haim, Ava Max, Charlie Xcx, Dominic Fike, Fifty Fifty, Gayle, Ice Spice, Kali, Karol G, Khalid, Pink Pantheress, Tame Impala and The Kid Laroi.
And even more artists will be announced at a later date. Dua Lipa’s first single from the album will be released on Friday.
Grammy-winning producer Mark Ronson, whose work ranges from Lady Gaga to Bruno Mars to Duran Duran, serves as executive music producer for the album.
And for those a bit befuddled as to Gosling’s inclusion on the soundtrack, a gentle reminder that he has a band called Dead Man’s Bones that released its first album in 2009 and,...
