‘The Invitation’ Film Review: Nathalie Emmanuel Can’t Save Cliched Take on Socially Conscious Horror
If the mostly by-the-numbers plot of “The Invitation,” and its eventual ridiculous twist, is tolerable at all, it’s due to the effortless effervescence that star Nathalie Emmanuel lends to this modern-day horror with gothic embellishments, as a mix-raced woman barely getting by in NYC who gets to live a British royal fantasy until it turns into a literal bloody mess.
Invoking “Twilight” and “Beauty and the Beast” with watered-down hints of “Crimson Peak,” the new feature from director Jessica M. Thompson (“The Light of the Moon”) opens with a suicide scene that insinuates the timelessness of its story. It’s here that its efforts to misdirect the audience about the type of supernatural entity we are dealing with begin.
In a more recognizable present, Evie (Emmanuel), a ceramics artist that stays afloat through catering jobs, takes a DNA test that connects her with a (white) cousin in England, Oliver...

As promised in the fictional Kaslan Corp's announcement video for their "Artificial Intelligence human companion" Buddi, the first trailer for the Child's Play remake premiered before screenings of The Prodigy, and now it's been released online for everyone to see.
Starring Aubrey Plaza as Karen, Brian Tyree Henry as Mike, and Gabriel Bateman as Andy, the Child's Play remake was directed by Lars Klevberg (Polaroid) from a screenplay by Tyler Burton Smith (Kung Fury).
The new Child's Play is a reimagining of the 1988 film of the same name directed by Tom Holland from a screenplay he co-wrote along with Don Mancini and John Lafia.
While the previous entries in the Child's Play franchise featured a killer "Good Guys" doll possessed by the serial killer Charles Lee Ray, the remake will take the tech-centric route with the AI-enhanced "Buddi" doll.

"More than a toy... he's your best friend." While the Child's Play franchise featured the terrors of a corrupted Good Guys doll, the remake will focus on the horrors of a malevolent "Buddi" doll, as evidenced by the film's new poster, which also reveals the movie's 2019 release date.
The new poster was unveiled on the official Child's Play Facebook page (see below) with the caption, "The fun is just getting started. Your best friend hits theaters nationwide on June 21, 2019."
Despite the different name, the killer doll still looks very similar to the Good Guys doll named Chucky from the previous seven installments in the franchise. It's not yet known if the doll in the new movie will be named Chucky, nor has it been announced who will voice him (Brad Dourif has given life to the iconic character in all seven movies thus far), but we'll keep Daily Dead readers...

Back in July, it was revealed that a remake of 1988's Child Play was in development, and now MGM and Orion Pictures have announced that production on the contemporary reimagining has commenced in Vancouver, with Aubrey Plaza playing the role of Karen, Brian Tyree Henry as Mike, and Gabriel Bateman playing Andy.
Lars Klevberg (Polaroid) is directing the new Child's Play movie from a screenplay by Tyler Burton Smith (Kung Fury), with David Katzenberg and Seth Grahame-Smith on board as producers.
The original Child's Play was directed by Tom Holland (Fright Night) and co-written by Don Mancini, who has kept the franchise alive by writing six sequels and directing the three most recent installments, and he's also developing a Child's Play TV series. At this time, it does not look like the remake will be connected to the detailed timeline of Mancini's movies.

Andy Wyrick (Murray) and his wife, Lisa (Spencer) are over the moon when they find what seems to be the ideal location to bring up their young daughter Heidi (Lind) – an old house situated deep in the woods of rural Georgia that used to be a staging post for escaping slaves on the underground railway. But soon after the move, as Heidi begins to witness a number of disturbing supernatural events, the ghostly spirits of the house’s past return to unleash terror on the present owners.
Ok, let’s get this out of the way first. Beyond being a story about supernatural events The Haunting In Connecticut 2: Ghosts of Georgia has Nothing to do with it’s predecessor. This film features all new characters, an all new family and an all new location.

A film that makes you care about people who care about people, this compact indie doesn't have to look hard for drama in a foster care home, whose young workers need help as much as the damaged teens in their charge. The storylines are a little convenient, but it's an emotional watch, and Larson is outstanding.

Following the impressive success of the original low-budget horror movie, The Haunting in Connecticut, Lionsgate have returned to bring us the sequel, The Haunting in Connecticut 2: Ghosts of Georgia, which is also loosely based on a true story.
Abigail Spencer (Oz the Great and Powerful, Cowboys & Aliens) takes the lead this time around as Lisa, starring alongside Chad Michael Murray, Morgana Shaw, Emily Alyn Lind, Cicely Tyson, Grant James, and Katee Sackhoff.
From the producers of The Haunting In Connecticut comes the chilling true story of the Wyrick family.

First off, let's just get something out of the way. The Haunting in Connecticut 2: Ghosts of Georgia never had a chance to succeed. With a paradoxical title like that, audiences are given a red flag immediately. If the producers of a movie can't decide on a better name for a film, then how could they make bigger decisions during production? Just pick a name! Was Ghosts of Georgia any more generic than The Haunting in Connecticut? The reason I sound so frustrated is because it deserves better.
The Wyrick family moves into a country house in Georgia. Their daughter, Heidi, soon begins telling her parents she talks to a man who warns they're in danger. Upon investigating, they find out their house is located on land once owned by a stationmaster of the Underground Railroad. The souls of the slaves are restless and begin haunting the family for unknown reasons.

The Haunting in Connecticut 2 Ghosts of Georgia is the directorial debut for Tom Elkins. He was the editor for the original The Haunting in Connecticut (2009) and The Apparition (2012). This is his first attempt at directing but is supported by a solid cast that includes Katie Sackhoff of Battlestar Galactica and Chad Michael Murray fresh off of One Tree Hill. All in all this looks like another hauntingghost story in the same vein as So many others. When nothing new is offered on story front so much more depends on the execution putting a lot of pressure on a rookie director.

The first thing people notice about The Haunting in Connecticut: Ghosts of Georgia is its unwieldy title. This title is obscenely long and it offers contradictory information. A sequel to the 2009 film A Haunting in Connecticut, this second film deals with a family moving into a new house. Obviously, spirits reside there. And, this is Tom Elkins first film as director. As well, many of the producers from the first film (Paul Brooks, Jeff Levine) return for this next entry. The crew brings together a competent production, which is dramatically driven by David Coggeshall's compelling script. There is a lot to take in with Ghosts of Georgia and horror fans will find lots to enjoy with this piece. The supposed true story begins with the Wyrick family.

The Haunting In Connecticut 2: Ghosts of Georgia – because the paranormal are also expert analysts of the housing market and know how much cheaper Southern living is. Psh, Connecticut, who can afford those prices! No, really though, why the hell wasn’t this just called The Haunting In Georgia? A haunting implies ghosts are involved without the giant blinking lights that highlight “Ghosts” the way our title is written now, and anyway, there isn’t even a connecting plot line between the two. Having The Haunting In Connecticut left in our title is really a pointless act of marketing to make people remember the mediocre film that started this soon to be trilogy (The Haunting In New York is next) of non-interconnecting stories about apparitions and the special people who can make contact with them.
But Ok, enough ranting about silly naming, there’s a horror movie behind that name begging to be reviewed!

2009′s The Haunting In Connecticut was a largely forgettable horror yarn that quickly came and went, disappearing into the home video void, a fate which the series – yes, it’s a series now, with a third film already in the works – is seemingly unable to escape with this straight-to-video “sequel”, Ghosts of Georgia.
Set 6 years after the events of the first film – but having absolutely no relation to those events nor even stepping one foot in Connecticut (the entire film is set in Georgia) – this sequel concerns itself with a hapless couple, Lisa (Abigail Spencer) and Andy Wyrick (Chad Michael Murray), who move into a new home with their daughter Heidi (Emily Alyn Lind), only to soon enough find themselves being haunted by a presence rising from beneath the foundations of the home.

I recently had the opportunity to interview director Tom Elkins, and we talked about this being his first feature film, his experiences on set, and the true events that inspired the movie:
Up to this point, you’ve been mainly involved in feature films as an editor. Why was The Haunting in Connecticut 2: Ghosts of Georgia the movie you wanted to be your directorial debut?
Tom Elkins: I was the editor on The Haunting in Connecticut. The film was very successful and I wouldn’t have been able to sleep at night if I didn’t tell Gold Circle that I’d like to direct a movie. When The Haunting in Georgia script came around, I was offered the opportunity to direct it,...
