Geek Culture has been buzzing about Star Wars: The Force Awakens to an overwhelming degree. It’s been a wonderful way to wrap up the year. Even with a focusing on the marketing, I’ve been talking about it on TV and in Entrepreneur Magazine. But the more I think I about it, the more I realize we may have gotten it wrong. I think we’ve been talking about the wrong movie. Joy, starring Jennifer Lawrence and Robert DeNiro is the movie that should be the poster child for Geek Culture. Let me tell you why.
My wife and I saw it last weekend, and I’ll admit I went into the theater thinking it was a (so-called) chick-flick. But now I realize the studio missed the bullseye with their marketing efforts. At the core, it’s an inspirational story of a persistent entrepreneur.

Cumbrian arts group to screen 1980s cult film at real-life location of Uncle Monty's house, with all proceeds going to charity
To Withnail and I fans, it will always be Uncle Monty's country bolthole, where alcoholic luvvie Withnail and his uptight best friend Marwood go on holiday "by mistake"; the ramshackle Lake District cottage where a rampant Monty tells Paul McGann's character he must have him, "even if it must be burglary".
But this summer the real-life Crow Crag – Sleddale Hall, near Shap in Cumbria – becomes the ultimate open-air cinema where fans like me get to endlessly parrot lines from perhaps the most quotable of quotable cult films (though The Big Lebowski might give it a run for its money).
This calls for a drink! Maybe two large gins, two pints of cider. Ice in the cider.
And perhaps the best thing about it all – in addition to the...

New owner of 'Crow Crag' is holding open-air screenings with live music next month. Sprinkling the Guardian Northerner with quotes from the script, John Appleby reports
Fans of the 1987 cult classic Withnail and I are preparing for a 'splendid weekend in the country', somewhat along the lines of the film's plot. Two outdoor screenings of Withnail will be staged in the courtyard at Sleddale Hall near Shap, the ramshackle farmhouse which stood in for Uncle Monty's 'Crow Crag' country retreat.
The post-film history of Sleddale Hall could almost be turned into a film in itself. Owned until recently by United Utilities, the remote 18th century farmhouse had seen plans for its redevelopment regularly put on the table by the company, only for them to return to the drawing board after failing to win support from Eden district council. Uninhabited since the filming, Sleddale slowly fell into dereliction as ironically, the...

Watch out, Volkswagen--your ironclad grip on the diesel car market may be about to weaken. Autobloggreen reports that a Gm-brand diesel passenger car is coming to the U.S. sometime in the near future.
Gm Vice Chairman Tom Stephens delivered the information to the attendee's of this week's Directions in Engine-Efficiency and Emissions Research (Deer) conference in Detroit. According to Stephens, future Gm diesels might be based on existing diesel powertrains manufactured by Gm in other countries (i.e. under the Europe-based Opel brand). No other details have been revealed.
So why would Gm go back to manufacturing diesel cars in the U.S. after a two-decade hiatus? Automakers like Volkswagen and Mercedes have proven that there is a fairly strong market for clean-burning diesel vehicles in the U.S. (20% of all Jettas sold are diesel-powered). And Tim Ellis, Vw of America's Vice President of Marketing, recently explained to FastCompany...

Look out on any street and gasoline-powered vehicles still dominate the road. But in the coming years, automakers like Toyota, Honda, and Gm plan to start pumping out plug-in hybrid electric cars in a bid to keep up with the fabled Ev revolution. Volkswagen, on the other hand, is taking a more conservative approach.
As we reported months ago, Vw is skeptical about the short-term possibility of widespread Ev adoption. Dr. Karl-Thomas Neumann, Chief Officer for Electric Traction at the Volkswagen Group, told us recently, "EVs are coming, but they will have to be affordable." And affordability just isn't realistic quite yet.
This week, Vw CEO Dr. Martin Winterkorn echoed Neumann's sentiments, explaining that hybrid and electric vehicles could make up 3% of sales by 2018. Upcoming models will include a hybrid Jetta and an all-electric Golf, set to be released in 2012 and 2013, respectively. But Vw's rollout schedule is nothing compared...

Volkswagen wants to be the world's No. 1 carmaker, but first the company has to win over America.

For a new CEO, first impressions matter. Early in his tenure as president and chief executive of the Volkswagen Group of America, Stefan Jacoby got an angry letter from a Vw dealer in California, declining his invitation to attend Jacoby's first all-hands dealer meeting. Jacoby was about to become the most recent in a long line of Germans bearing promises. " 'I don't want to come to Orlando and hear all these lies,' " he recalls, quoting the note. "I was impressed with the honesty, and to a certain extent,...
