Imagine you’re in the middle of watching Patrick Ewing and Hakeem Olajuwon try to outscore each other in game 5 of the NBA Finals when all of a sudden your broadcasters cut to O.J. Simpson slowly engaging in a police chase. Imagine further that you’re now so invested in the chase that you couldn’t possibly pull yourself from the TV. And who is that you see but Snake Plissken. That’s right, Kurt Russell has direct ties to the O.J. Simpson chase which came a few days after the murder of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown, and her friend Ron Goldman.
As Kate Hudson told Jimmy Kimmel, the family lived near Simpson’s home at the time and Kurt Russell found his opportunity to be part of history. “It was the big chase. And Kurt…O.J. was on the 405 and Kurt all of sudden just went, ‘Oh,...

Daniel Goldberg, the co-screenwriter of “Stripes” and producer of feature comedies like “Space Jam,” “Old School” and the “Hangover” trilogy, died Wednesday at age 74.
A frequent collaborator of directors Ivan Reitman and Todd Phillips and actor Bill Murray, who in addition to “Stripes” starred in the Goldberg co-penned “Meatballs,” Goldberg is survived by his wife, fellow Canadian film producer Ilona Herzberg, and his brother, “Deuce Bigalow” screenwriter Harris Goldberg. Per media reports, no cause of death was made public.
In a tribute for Deadline published Wednesday, Ivan Reitman’s son, filmmaker Jason Reitman, remembered Goldberg as “one of the kindest and most gentle souls I’ve ever known.”
Goldberg and Reitman first met in 1966 at McMaster University, where they went on to make several short films together (many of which starred a young “Schitt’s Creek” Emmy winner Eugene Levy) and cofounded a film society — not without kicking up some controversy,...

With a string of idiosyncratic filmmakers, studio interference, and more 180-degree turns than Linda Blair's head, "The Exorcist" must be one of the strangest franchises to ever come out of Hollywood. That said, its flaws are also a boon -- the films are far more interesting than the usual cookie-cutter horror sequels, with each entry feeling like a personal statement from its director, for better or worse. Well, usually for the worse.
Case in point: 1990's "The Exorcist III." After the goofy metaphysics of John Boorman's widely derided "Exorcist II: The Heretic," "The Exorcist" writer and author William Peter Blatty pitched a story called "Legion" for another sequel that would ignore the events of Boorman's film. Warner Bros. was keen, but after "The Exorcist" director William Friedkin left due to creative differences, the project ended up languishing in development hell. Blatty decided to turn "Legion" into a novel...

‘Something from Tiffany’s’ Review: A Warm but Weak-Spirited Rom-Com that Isn’t Worthy of Zoey Deutch
Twenty-eight-year-old actress Zoey Deutch was either born at the wrong time to star in romantic comedies, or at the perfect time to redeem them. If only it were both. If only people were still making rom-coms worthy of the light and lovability that Deutch — who previously flirted with the genre in Netflix’s “Set It Up,” between spikier roles in the likes of “Everybody Wants Some!!” and “Not Okay” — is more capable of bringing to them than just about anyone this side of Meg Ryan.
But they’re not, and nowhere is that more obvious than in like “Something from Tiffany’s,” which gives Deutch a chance to shine at full-wattage during a movie that can hardly muster the energy to power a string of Christmas lights. I guess it’s fitting that her character is more of a Hanukkah kind of girl, because the fire she brings to the role...

Welcome to the final show. Harry Styles topped off his historic 15-night run at New York’s Madison Square Garden with a triumphant closing-night blowout. To celebrate, the Garden raised a banner to the rafters commemorating his record-setting run of 15 sold-out shows, a month after Harry began his “Love on Tour” residency on Aug. 20. It was a night to celebrate — the Garden made sure each seat had its own feather boa, officially marking the arena as Harry’s House.

One of the more shocking pop culture developments of 2022 was the breakup of Desus Nice and The Kid Mero, the longtime comedy duo who turned their hit podcast “Bodega Boys” into a comedy empire that culminated in the late night talk show “Desus & Mero,” which ran for four seasons on Showtime. Last month, the stars abruptly revealed that they would not only be ending their Showtime series, but also their creative partnership as a whole.
At the time, a Showtime spokesperson told IndieWire, “Showtime’s late-night talk show ‘Desus & Mero’ will not be returning for a fifth season. Its final episode aired Thursday, June 23. Desus Nice and The Kid Mero will be pursuing separate creative endeavors moving forward.”
Since then, fan speculation has run rampant about whether the breakup was the result of a feud between the two comedians. But that’s not the way Desus and Mero see it.

Joel Martinez, best known as The Kid Mero, appeared on SiriusXM’s “Basic!” podcast and broke his silence on ending his longtime partnership with Desus Nice (real name Daniel Baker). The two gained popularity with their “Bodega Boys” podcast, which launched in 2015, and then became late-night staples with their Showtime series “Desus & Mero.” Fans were shocked when the network announced last month that “Desus & Mero” was abruptly ending after four seasons.
“Desus and I had discussed pursuing separate interests over a year prior to the show coming to an end and that conversation solidified us in signing overall agreements that recognized our intent to operate independent of one another,” Mero said on the podcast. “As far back as June of last year we were both pitching or looking to join existing projects as individuals.”

The Kid Mero, otherwise known as Joel Martinez, has addressed the end of Desus & Mero, declaring that the pair have wanted to pursue separate interests for over a year.
It comes after he split with his late-night partner Desus Nice, otherwise known as Daniel Baker, and ended their Showtime series.
There have been reports that the pair separated over issues relating to their manager Victor Lopez and his involvement with their Showtime series.
Mero says the move has been in the works for some time and they signed separate overall agreements to allow them to work on their own projects. He didn’t, however, specify who the overall deals were with.
Speaking on the SiriusXM Basic! podcast, co-hosted by former MTV exec Doug Herzog and Jen Chaney, he said, “Desus and I had discussed pursuing separate interests over a year prior to the show coming to an end and that...

Warner Bros. and HBO Max have released the first trailer for “Space Jam: A New Legacy,” the sequel to the blockbuster 1996 comedy that featured NBA superstars alongside Looney Tunes characters. Stepping into Michael Jordan’s kicks this time around is LeBron James, who spearheaded the title’s return under his production company SpringHill Entertainment. Though he played a comedic role in Amy Schumer’s “Trainwreck,” “Space Jam 2” marks his first foray into leading man territory, where he plays a fictionalized version of himself in the live-action/animated sports comedy.
“Girls Trip” director Malcolm D. Lee is helming the production after taking over from “Random Acts of Flyness” creator Terence Nance. Film director and New York Knicks superfan Spike Lee has blasted Madison Square Garden security for hassling Patrick Ewing, the Georgetown basketball coach who was involved in an incident earlier this week.
Ewing, a Knicks legend whose jersey hangs in the rafters of the world’s most famous arena, claimed he was “accosted” by security on Thursday while he prepared to coach Georgetown in the Big East Tournament.
Lee underwent similar problems with Msg security before, and vented on ESPN’s First Take that hassling Ewing at the Garden was inexcusable. Lee’s incident occurred when he was asked to use another entrance to the arena instead of the employee’s entrance that he claimed he had used for 28 years.
“I’m not blaming this on [James] Dolan,” Lee said referring to the Knicks owner and Madison Square Garden Sports and Madison Square Garden Entertainment and executive chairman of Msg Networks.

If you watched the recent ESPN docuseries The Last Dance, chronicling the final title run of the Chicago Bulls in 1998, you may have noticed the famous “Jordan Dome” from Space Jam. The series jumps back in time for certain segments and after Jordan comes out of retirement (for the first time), he loses in the playoffs to the Orlando Magic.
Following the Bulls’ exit, Jordan began filming Space Jam in the summer of 1995. Hellbent on never losing another series, he had Warner Bros. build him a full-size basketball court so that he could practice and train during off days from shooting the movie. Sports fans know of the infamous “Jordan Dome,” of course, but there was never really any footage of the games Mj would have in it.
The series features all-too-brief moments of Jordan playing on the court with a number of big names, including Reggie Miller, Charles Oakley and Patrick Ewing.

Anyone who’s conducted an interview knows that the last question is often the hardest. Sometimes you save the trickiest one for the end; at other times, it’s a chance to sneak in one last curveball to get at the real interview subject underneath.
Sitting across from Michael Jordan, in their third and final round of on-camera conversations, director Jason Hehir decided to go as big picture as he possibly could: “The last thing I asked him in the last interview was: ‘100 years from now, what do you want people to say about you as a player? And then 100 years from now, what do you want people to say about you as a person?” Hehir told IndieWire.
Part of the decision to end on a more theoretical, far-reaching question came from the fact that the person Hehir was asking has been on the receiving end of every other kind...

Everybody get up, it’s time to slam now because “Space Jam 2” has an official title, thanks to NBA superstar LeBron James.
On Thursday, the Lakers player posted a video of himself wearing a hat on his Instagram with the logo of “Space Jam: A New Legacy,” the apparent title of the Looney Tunes sequel. It was reposted by the film’s official Twitter page later that day.

You can officially stop calling it “Space Jam 2.” In an Instagram post Thursday, LeBron James revealed the title for the sequel to the Looney Tunes-Meets-Basketball film along with the film’s logo.
The sequel is now titled “Space Jam: A New Legacy,” and the film’s release date is still set for 2021.
The 1996 original film starred Michael Jordan playing basketball alongside Bugs Bunny, Porky Pig and the rest of the Looney Tunes gang. “Space Jam: A New Legacy” updates the premise with LeBron James leading the cast, and major current NBA stars are expected to make cameos. It also stars Don Cheadle.

Michael Jordan, who won six NBA championships with the Chicago Bulls, is widely considered the best basketball player of all time.
The story of how Jordan, and his Bulls teammates, dominated in the 1990s is the subject of ESPN and Netflix’s ten-part documentary series The Last Dance, directed by Jason Hehir. The series launches on April 19 after the Disney-owned sports network and the streamer moved it up from its planned June premiere.

Bill Skarsgård did a fantastic job of terrifying children in both of the It films as Pennywise. His chilling performance resulted in many members of the audience having to sleep with the lights on after witnessing his portrayal of the infamous Stephen King character. But now it seems as if his next appearance will be making folks laugh instead of cry, as the horrific clown is set to show up in the hugely anticipated Space Jam 2.

David Stern, the former longtime commissioner of the NBA, died Wednesday following a brain hemorrhage, according to a statement from current NBA Commissioner Adam Silver. He was 77.
“David took over the NBA in 1984 with the league at a crossroads,” Silver wrote. “But over the course of 30 years as Commissioner, he ushered in the modern global NBA. He launched groundbreaking media and marketing partnerships, digital assets and social responsibility programs that have brought the game to billions of people around the world.”
Stern suffered a sudden brain hemorrhage on Dec. 12 and underwent emergency surgery.

“Random Acts of Flyness” creator Terence Nance is officially out as director of Warner Bros.’ sequel to the 1996 live-action/animated sports comedy “Space Jam.” According to Deadline, Nance is being replaced by “Girls Trip” helmer Malcolm D. Lee.
Nance’s exit is said to have been an “amicable” one, with creative differences cited as the reason for his departure.
Lee might actually be the more logical choice here, given his mainstream comedy roots, and proven box office prowess, with 11 feature films on his resume. Although Nance’s surrealist, stream-of-consciousness style — as seen in his 2012 feature debut “An Oversimplification of Her Beauty,” and in his vérité HBO sketch series “Random Acts of Flyness” — may have given the “Space Jam” franchise a fresh creative jolt.
This also would have been Nance’s first studio feature.

“Girls Trip” director Malcolm D. Lee is replacing Terence Nance as director of “Space Jam 2,” starring LeBron James, for Warner Bros. and James’ SpringHill Entertainment.
The departure of Nance, creator of the HBO show “Random Acts of Flyness,” was due to differing visions between Nance and the producers for “Space Jam 2.” Warner Bros. has set a July 16, 2021, date for its live-action/animated sports comedy. Lee’s recent credits include “Girls Trip,” “Night School” and “Barbershop: The Final Cut.”
Don Cheadle is also starring in “Space Jam 2.” The movie marks James’ first major acting role. He played himself in the 2015 Amy Schumer-Bill Hader comedy “Trainwreck.”
Rumors of a “Space Jam” follow-up first emerged in 2015 when James and his company, SpringHill Entertainment, signed a deal with Warner Bros. Justin Lin was in talks to direct in 2016, but that deal did not go through. Lin is an executive producer on the movie.

Just as “Space Jam” didn’t star Michael Jordan by himself, neither can “Space Jam 2” focus exclusively on LeBron James. Charles Barkley, Shawn Bradley, Patrick Ewing, Larry Johnson, and Muggsy Bogues all had their talents stolen by the Monstars, too, and so fans have been waiting to hear who will round out the starting five of this long-awaited sequel. FiveThirtyEight has thrown its hat into the ring, attempting to help LeBron and the filmmakers by using math to cast the rest of the film.

A lot of fans are excited about Warner Bros.’ Space Jam 2, but apparently a lot of the NBA athletes aren’t. According to ESPN's Brian Windhorst, Lebron James, who will star in and produce the movie, is having trouble recruiting players to be in the movie. He’s been making an effort, but only a few players have signed on.
Windhorst explained:
"In all honesty, he's been recruiting players to come and try to be in Space Jam with him this summer and he hasn't been able to close some of those deals. He's recruiting for his movie as well as he is for the Lakers."
When asked which NBA players James has been trying to get on board the film Windhorst said, "I'm not going to say right now but let's just say it's the top players."

Sonequa Martin-Green is in negotiation to join LeBron James in Warner Bros.’ “Space Jam 2,” sources tell Variety.
Terence Nance, creator of the HBO show “Random Acts of Flyness,” is directing the untitled sequel, with “Black Panther” director Ryan Coogler producing with James and his partner Maverick Carter (through their SpringHill Entertainment banner).
Sources say Martin-Green will play James’ wife in the pic, which hits theaters on July 16, 2021.
Rumors of a “Space Jam” follow-up first emerged in 2015 when James and SpringHill signed a content creation deal with Warner Bros. Production will get underway this summer during James’ NBA off-season.

That pic went on to gross $230 million worldwide and besides Jordan, featured some of the NBA’s biggest stars, like Larry Bird, Charles Barkley, and Patrick Ewing. The new film...

Netflix’s new animated comedy “Big Mouth” takes on adolescence from a distinctly adult point of view, tracking the middle school adventures of a pack of tweens whose bodies are changing in crazy ways. Fortunately, their antics are brought to life by the crème de la crème of voice acting — starting with the powerhouse himself, co-creator Nick Kroll.

Despite having a reputation as one of the greatest horror movies ever made, William Friedkin’s The Exorcist was never really able to find its footing as a franchise, despite the best efforts of Hollywood executives to make it happen. Each of the three sequels in the series experienced major post-production woes: Exorcist II: The Heretic was recut by director John Boorman after its premiere. Paul Schrader’s Exorcist sequel, intended to be the fourth film in the franchise, was so poorly received by studio execs that it was largely reshot and recut with director Renny Harlin at the helm, released in 2004 as Exorcist: The Beginning. Schrader’s own version came out one year later as Dominion: A Prequel to the Exorcist, making what I think is the first (and only?) time in history that two completely different versions of the same movie were released in theaters. Neither was a success.

Twenty years on from the release of "Space Jam" came word that a sequel is in the works which will center around LeBron James teaming up with the Looney Tunes All-Stars.
It's news that has been received by quite a bit of excitement from fans, but one person who isn't keen on the idea is the first film's director Joe Pytka. Talking with THR this week, he revealed that he thinks the film will flop at the box-office - but not from lack of public interest:
"Don't do it. It's doomed. Michael Jordan was the biggest star on the planet. When we did Space Jam, there was a perfect storm of players and ex-players available - Larry Bird, Charles Barkley, Patrick Ewing. They all had a persona that complemented the film. There are none around like that now."
The original film scored a strong $230 million worldwide back in 1996 and went on to strong VHS sales.

"It's doomed", says the director of Space Jam, of Space Jam 2...
The first Space Jam film brought Michael Jordan and Bugs Bunny together back in 1996. And whilst the movie struggled to notch up good reviews, it sure did find an audience, one that’s stuck with the film for the 20 years (!) since it was first released.
Joe Pytka directed the original film, although he’s not involved in the recently revealed Space Jam 2. The new sequel will see LeBron James star, with Star Trek Beyond and Fast & Furious director Justin Lin behind the camera.
