The Black Emanuelle films aren’t really a series in the proper sense of the word. True, they all star Indonesian-Dutch actress Laura Gemser, and she usually plays a globetrotting photojournalist called Emanuelle. (The single “m” in her name was used to avoid infringing on the copyright of Just Jaeckin’s 1974 softcore sensation Emmanuelle starring Sylvia Kristel.) But there’s no notion of continuity between installments (often the product of different teams of writers and directors), and, even though a core group of actors does turn up time and again, they always play different, unrelated characters. What unites these films, apart from Gemser’s presence, is their dedication to exploring sexuality in a frank and uninhibited manner.
Severin’s new box set, The Sensual World of Black Emanuelle, brings together all 21 of the Laura Gemser films, most of them newly restored from 2K scans of the original materials, as well...

3-D goes Kung-Fu in Super-Touch! The 3-D Film Archive restores a Far East oddity from the year of Star Wars, an all-action sword, fist and supernatural magic combat spectacle. The big battles play like choreographed dance numbers, but with sound effects and screams taking the place of music. The disc’s 3-D extras are of special interest — we take a tour of every display section of a 1955 department store in full dimensional images.

Film has always been about illusion, or rather about projecting an illusion meant to fool the audience with a hopefully immersive experience. It’s all sleight of hand in the end, and a film’s success depends on the wits of the magician. But what happens when the illusion becomes real and crosses the line? This is a question raised by Effects (1980), a compelling treatise on snuff films, the responsibility of filmmakers, and where the line is drawn.
Made in 1979 by comrades in arms of George Romero, Effects was made for $55,000 but was never officially released except for a couple of one night screenings and festivals. It never even made it onto home video until decades later. Was the film deemed too taboo for the market? Hardly; some films just get lost in a mix of poor distribution and apathy. A pity then, as Effects has a lot to say about low budget,...

Ah yes, lightning in a bottle – that elusive moment when the stars align with the zeitgeist, where talent meets opportunity in the arts and a work is forever cherished through time. And then there’s Invasion of the Blood Farmers (1972), Ed Adlum’s magnum opus of killer druids draining the blood supply of a group of rural New Yorkers in search of the right host to resurrect their long dormant queen. But for fans of schlock and hilarity, Invasion is that lightning, and Severin Films has captured it with their beautiful Blu of this epic oddity.
The lightning starts with Cashbox magazine employee Ed Adlum raising money through his contacts to make a horror film. He raises $24,000, and he and fellow Cashbox-er Ed Kelleher set out to write the film with the title as inspiration. Except their plan for aliens becomes cost prohibitive, so they change it to druids, because...

Not really the stupid stoner humor-dominated horror comedy you might expect, “4/20 Massacre” is a fairly straightforward indie slasher that’s only semi-tongue-in-cheek. Though it can’t claim to be the first such exercise, it does gain novelty value and some specialized appeal from having a mostly lesbian protagonist roll call. Unmemorable but fun as far as it goes, Dylan Reynolds’ very female-driven thriller launches on VOD and DVD April 3, with a single-screen Los Angeles theatrical run starting (of course) 4/20.
From the get-go hewing closely to slasher conventions, sexual orientation aside, Reynolds’ screenplay starts with a couple of gormless rural bros (Mark Schroeder, Drew Talbert) traipsing into a somewhat arid mountain region (the pic was shot in the vicinity of the San Bernardino National Forest, near Los Angeles). They’re certain there’s a hidden illegal pot farm around here somewhere, and their none-too-bright goal is simply to steal some weed from the “criminals.

There are horror movies that will give you nightmares, and cause you to fear showers and shallow waters for decades. There are some that get deep under your skin – often times because they've literally flayed or burrowed under their characters' skins – and others that will make you see everyday items (a bowl of pea soup, a hockey mask, a videotape) in a horrifying new light. And then there are the ones that push so many social-taboo envelopes, strike so many collective raw nerves and tweak so many communal gag reflexes that they are a cut,...

Aside from the obvious appeal of this smörgásbord of dirty movie delights, cult director Frank Henenlotter hosts a good history of soft-core film smut, in all its forms. [1] Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard are both responsible for some pretty fantastic pieces of recent popular culture. Whedon, of course, made Firefly, Buffy and Angel, Goddard had a hand in Alias, Lost and Cloverfield and currently the former is making The Avengers and the other is writing Spielberg's Robopocalypse. But, several years ago, the two paired up to write a movie called The Cabin in the Woods. Goddard directed and while it was scheduled to come out in early 2010, the horror film sat on a shelf [2] as its distributor, MGM, went through hell [3]. Finally, it was rescued by Lionsgate [4] and on April 13, Whedon and Goddard's film will finally see a wide release. We saw a cryptic teaser poster for the film a while back but with a new distributor comes new marketing and Lionsgate has just revealed their first teaser poster for The Cabin in the Woods. Check it out after the jump.

Amber Heard has come clean about her sexual orientation. The actress who is tapped to play Johnny Depp's love interest in movie "The Rum Diary" tagged along her lesbian partner Tasya van Ree, walking proudly on the red carpet of GLAAD 25th Anniversary Party on Friday night, December 3. She wore red ensemble in contrast of her partner who opted dark outfit.
Heard decided to come out of the closet because she doesn't want to be "a part of the problem." She told AfterEllen.com, "When millions and millions of hard-working, tax paying Americans are denied their rights and denied their equality you have to ask yourself what are the factors that are an epidemic problem and that's what this is."
"Injustice can never be stood for. It always must be fought against and I just was sick of it being a problem. Because I'm in the media I was...

At tonight’s celebration of 25 years of The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD), AfterEllen.com was on the red carpet and talked for a few minutes with actress Amber Heard (The Stepfather, The Joneses, Pineapple Express), who spoke openly (and happily) about her choice to come out and, as she eloquently said, not be "a part of the problem" by staying in the closet. Heard, who was joined by her partner, Tasya van Ree, was also clearly honored to have the privilege of presenting the Founder’s Award to GLAAD/La Founder and First Executive Director Richard Jennings during the event, held at Harmony Gold in Los Angeles.
AfterEllen.com: What does it mean to you to be a part of this event tonight?
Amber Heard: I’m honored to be a part of GLAAD. I’ve long been a fan and long wanted to be a part of an organization as powerful,...
