There was a time in American history when an influential scientist could ask, without raising eyebrows, “Can we build a wall high enough around this country so as to keep out these cheaper races?”
That time, in the early 20th century, is explored in The Eugenics Crusade, a documentary directed by Michelle Ferrari that’s part of the PBS series American Experience. Both Ferrari’s film and the series as a whole are now in contention for Emmy nominations. The documentary shows how eugenics—the idea that human society can be bettered through forced selective breeding—flourished as a scientific, social and political force for decades.
“It’s a capture of American history that’s just not known, and that was very motivating for me,” Ferrari explains. “The idea that this movement unfolded in the 20th century and most people don’t know anything about it and certainly don’t...

Spike Jonze’s philosophical sci-fi love story Her, and Billy Ray’s harrowing true-life hostage saga Captain Phillips earned best original and adapted screenplays, respectively, from the Writers Guild Awards on Saturday.
In the original category, Her was facing its four rivals for the Oscar: American Hustle, Blue Jasmine, Dallas Buyers Club, and Nebraska, so its victory can be seen as a strong harbinger of where the Academy Award could go on March 2. In anecdotal sampling of Academy members, EW’s Prize Fighter has also determined that Her is far and away the front-runner for this category.

Director: Alex Gibney; Screenwriter Alex Gibney; Starring: Lance Armstrong, Reed Albergotti, Betsy Andreu, Michelle Ferrari; Running time: 124 mins; Certificate: 15
The issue of self-insertion is a tricky one for documentary filmmakers. It's tempting for any director to cast themselves as more than a narrator or a tour guide, but participate too much and you end up distracting from the story you're actually telling, as Michael Moore has demonstrated amply and often.
Alex Gibney, arguably the best non-fiction filmmaker working today, knows when to pull back and when to lean in - he was scarcely a presence at all in last year's compelling We Steal Secrets, but here his involvement is crucial, and his relationship with his subject ultimately more illuminating than any of the talking head segments that surround it.
Gibney was given unprecedented access to Lance Armstrong in 2008, for a documentary that originally took shape as a kind of comeback chronicle-cum-puff piece.
