The year 1990 was a pretty decent time for a trip to the movies, especially if you’re a self confessed gore-hound, like yours truly. There’s nothing better than sitting down in a packed movie theater, or even at home with the pet cat or a similarly cherished human, to watch some carnage on the screen. Tom Savini’s Night of the Living Dead was a fun remake of the 1968 classic, while we also got the likes of It, Tremors, Child’s Play 2, Gremlins 2, Predator 2 (there’s a theme forming here…) Killer Crocodile 2. Ok, maybe not that last one. Also, if you’re a fan of Stephen King adaptations, the year also brought the ankle smashing Misery with Cathy Bates in full on psycho mode, plus the outlandishly bad, in a good way, Frankenhooker, replete with all of its soft-core pornography and grisly images. Which brings us...

Damn Handy epitomizes the notion that it takes a village to make a film.
The Craft and Flatliners screenwriter Peter Filardi is turning Guilford, the coastal Connecticut town he now calls home, into a microcosm of Hollywood. Upon meeting Roger Clark, best known for portraying Arthur Morgan in the video game Red Dead Redemption 2, at a local dog park during the pandemic, the two knew they had to work together.
The first person they went to was Alec Asten of Connecticut-based production company Firesite Films. Following a successful collaboration on the 2021 short Hazardous — with Filardi writing and directing, Clark acting and producing, and Firesite producing and recruiting crew — the team was eager to reunite.

We have some bad news for fans of Chapelwaite.
The horror drama will not be returning for a second season.
Co-creator and Executive Producer Jason Filardi took to X to share the sad news.
"I'm afraid Captain Boone's story ends on that beach of weathered, Maine sand," Filardi posted.

Chapelwaite launched in August 2021, with the development of a second season being announced shortly after.
But with a lack of updates, fans were left pondering what would become of the series.
Unfortunately, it's likely that no episodes were produced for the planned second season, and Epix becoming MGM+ likely changed the streamer's priorities away from making the new season.

The Epix television show Chapelwaite was described as being a ten episode limited series that would tell the story of Stephen King’s short story Jerusalem‘s Lot, which was a prequel to his novel Salem’s Lot… but after the show’s run came to an end, it was announced that Chapelwaite season 2 was in the works. While the first season had covered the entirety of King’s story, in its own way, the second season was going to go beyond the source material to tell its own original story. But things have changed in the year and half since it appeared that Chapelwaite season 2 was a sure thing, and now showrunner Jason Filardi has taken to social media to confirm that the new season isn’t going to happen after all.

The Craft writer Peter Filardi has been approached about turning the 1996 teen horror classic into a Broadway musical, Bloody Disgusting has exclusively learned.
“We really just started discussing it,” Filardi tells me from the set of Damn Handy, a short film he’s writing and directing. “[The Craft] was my story, and I got the story credit, so that gives me something called separate rights, which covers theater. I didn’t even know that!”
He continues, “These people with a track record of doing Broadway musicals approached me and asked me if I had the rights and if I was interested. Once lawyers determined that I did have the rights, I said, ‘I’m definitely interested.’ I’ve just given them a free shopping agreement, and they’re going to try to set it up.”

Beginning this Sunday, Chapelwaite is the new Epix series adaptation of Stephen King's short story, Jerusalem's Lot.
Starring Adrien Brody and Emily Hampshire, Chapelwaite takes viewers to Preacher's Corners, where Charles takes his family to reside in his ancestral home.
Produced by Peter Filardi, Jason Filardi, and Donald De Line, Chapelwaite follows the Boone family and their governess, Rebecca, as they try to fit into a hostile environment at home and in town that, despite their best efforts, seems hellbent at making their lives miserable.
We had the opportunity to talk with stars Brody and Hampshire and the producers for an introduction to the series.
We'll be reviewing Chapelwaite weekly, and if you're a fan of King, this might be the adaptation of his work that you've been waiting for.
It's a haunting and heartfelt tale that immerses you in the Boones' experience, bringing Preacher's Corner and the tragedy that defines it to life.

“We Are The Weirdos, Mister.” A phrase you’ll find printed over t-shirts, pin badges, mugs, earrings, tote bags, necklaces, and more all over the internet. It’s the most iconic line from The Craft, a film released 25 years ago that still has a rabid following today. For anyone unfamiliar with The Craft, it’s a line spoken by Fairuza Balk’s Nancy, an inferno in black lippy and sunglasses, the de facto leader of a homemade coven made up of outsiders who have taken the raw deal the world has given them and rejected it by learning to harness the power of nature. This line is everything. We are no longer going to be victims, it says. We will no longer be afraid. We reclaim our space, our power. That we are four teenaged girls will no longer mean we have to watch out for ‘weirdos’ – because it is us who are the weirdos.

For alternative kids of a certain age, 1996’s The Craft was more than a touchstone horror movie; it was an aspirational tale of independence. Maybe even more than the original’s director Andrew Fleming and writer Peter Filardi fully realized, a movie about four female friends using their witching powers to rise above (or is that levitate over?) the rigors of high school life and literally walk on water was intoxicating to Gen-Xers and older millennials who liked to paint it black. It appears that the quite on-the-nose legacy sequel of The Craft: Legacy is picking up on those witchy vibes of empowerment too.
Originally titled The Craft, the renamed The Craft: Legacy does everything a legacy sequel is supposed to: It remakes the original film from a modern perspective while reverently existing in the pre-established universe of the original movie(s). Thus enters Hannah (Cailee Spaeny), the new girl...

Joel Schumacher, costume designer-turned-director of films including “St. Elmo’s Fire,” “The Lost Boys” and “Falling Down,” as well as two “Batman” films, died in New York City on Monday morning after a year-long battle with cancer. He was 80.
Schumacher brought his fashion background to directing a run of stylish films throughout the 1980s and 1990s that were not always critically acclaimed, but continue to be well-loved by audiences for capturing the feel of the era.
Schumacher was handed the reins of the “Batman” franchise when Tim Burton exited Warner Bros.’ Caped Crusader series after two enormously successful films. The first movie by Schumacher, “Batman Forever,” starring Val Kilmer, Tommy Lee Jones, Jim Carrey and Nicole Kidman, grossed more than $300 million worldwide.
Schumacher’s second and last film in the franchise was 1997’s “Batman and Robin,” with George Clooney as Batman and Arnold Schwarzenegger as villain Mr. Freeze. For “Batman Forever,...

Stephen King, horror man extraordinaire, has the Midas touch when it comes to spook-filled romps. The It adaptations were monstrous successes, his partnership with Mike Flanagan has proven fruitful for the both of them and now, adding to the exemplary TV layout of King’s properties will soon be a ‘Salem’s Lot prequel in the form of Jerusalem’s Lot, which is coming to Epix and has Adrien Brody attached as the star.
The series, which is going to be the first in-house production for Epix, already has a 10-episode order, is set to shoot next year and will be released in Fall 2020 for a spooky Halloween treat. Jerusalem’s Lot, based on a Stephen King story, is in the works as an Epix TV series starring Oscar winner Adrien Brody.
Epix is getting into the ever-thriving Stephen King adaptation game with a 10-episode series order for Jerusalem’s Lot, adapting the author’s 1978 follow-up short story to his novel, Salem’s Lot. Moreover, the premium cable channel has already tapped a headliner for the series in Oscar-winning actor Adrien Brody.
Siblings Jason and Peter Filardi will serve as executive producers and showrunners for Jerusalem’s Lot, which will be a franchise return of sorts for the former, who wrote the two-part teleplay for the 2004 TNT Salem’s Lot reboot, which starred Rob Lowe. The Filardis will be joined by executive producer Donald De Line. The series will notably serve as the first offering from the cable channel’s in-house shingle, Epix Productions.

Epix has given a straight-to-series order to the an adaptation of Stephen King’s short story “Jerusalem’s Lot,” with Adrien Brody attached to star.

Scream Factory’s slate of Blu-ray releases continues to expand in all directions, from recent indie releases to beloved cult favorites to the movie classic and esoteric, as evidenced by several of its recent offerings. Here are just three new Scream Factory titles that represent the breadth of the company’s constantly growing catalogue.
The Clovehitch Killer: First up is 2018’s The Clovehitch Killer, a serial killer drama from IFC midnight starring Dylan McDermott as a geeky suburban dad whose teenage son (Charlie Plummer) has begun to suspect he might be a serial killer. If that sounds a little like IFC’s I Am Not a Serial Killer from a few years back, that’s because the movies have a lot in common—though, without spoiling either one, I will say that Clovehitch is missing some of the other film’s more outlandish plot developments. More a drama than a traditional horror movie,...

With March in full swing, we have another big batch of horror headed home this week that genre fans should keep an eye out for, including one of my most anticipated releases of the month: Scream Factory’s Collector’s Edition of The Craft (so excited to call the corners with this new Blu-ray!). Beyond that, we have even more great titles to get excited about, including the criminally underseen Kolobos from Arrow Video, Man’s Best Friend, featuring one of my favorites—Ally Sheedy—and Nicolas Pesce’s Piercing, which features some brilliant performances from the likes of Mia Wasikowska and Christopher Abbott.
Other Blu-ray and DVD releases for March 12th include Garden Party Massacre, She Wolf, The Greasy Strangler: Special Director’s Edition, Lifechanger, Silk Scream, and The Wild Pussycat.

Oh, this new and pointless Flatliners deserves all the terrible death-related puns we can toss at it: “Someone should have put a do-not-rescusitate on the 1990 movie.” “A fate worse than death.” “Brain dead.” “Send it to the morgue.” C’mon, it’s fun!

Hollywood’s defibrillator acumen on long-dormant properties continues with “Flatliners,” only without any real shock to life to justify remaking the 1990 cheating-death thriller starring Kiefer Sutherland and Julia Roberts. Keeping original writer Peter Filardi’s same basic structure of cocky medical students checking into the beyond for a few minutes for ostensibly research-oriented reasons, only to discover the afterlife has aftereffects, Swedish director Niels Arden Opley (“The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo”) and new screenwriter Ben Ripley (“Source Code”) serve up a fast-moving but seriously underwhelming and charmless display of young-and-dangerous tropes and paranormal consequences. Ellen Page is in talks to star in the upcoming reboot of the 1990 sci-fi thriller "Flatliners" at Sony Pictures.
The Peter Filardi scripted original centered on five medical students - Kiefer Sutherland, Julia Roberts, Kevin Bacon, William Baldwin and Oliver Platt - who bring subject themselves to near-death experiences in order to see if anything lies beyond.
After being revived they soon find themselves struggling to determine fantasy from reality as physical manifestations of childhood sins revisit them.
Niels Arden Oplev ("Dead Man Down") will helm from a screenplay by Ben Ripley. David Blackman and Laurence Mark are producing.

With the eve when the veils between worlds is at its thinnest around the corner, it’s difficult not to think of the day’s most prominently featured figure: the witch. Below is an essential viewing list, ranging in genre and targeted age group, of filmic work that showcase witches (loosely defined for our purposes) and show just how badass and horrifying these heralds of the supernatural can be.

American Horror Story: Coven
Created by Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk
USA, 2013
This anthology television series, which premiered last week, promises another visually stunning horrifying boundary pushing work with its third season. Coven begins by following young Zoe (Taissa Farmiga), who discovers her supernatural roots in a rather gruesome incident and is then whisked off to a private school for ‘talented’ young women. Set between the present day and the 1830s, Coven promises a panoply of witch-related themes including witch hunts,...

Over this past weekend, hundreds of hungry (literally and figuratively) screenwriters arrived in Burbank, CA to pitch their life’s dream to studio execs. The Great American Pitchfest not only can open doors, but is massively educational, offering an opportunity to meet like minded writers and actors and directors who all want to do the same thing, and learn from the best in the process.
There were plenty of free classes and panels, of which we attended several. All of which were illuminating, inspiring, informative, and filled with influential writers and directors. There was also free cake. So yeah, go next year.
