She used to live in Edinburgh but now lives in Barnard Castle, C. Durham.
Mrs. Fine was awarded the OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) in the 2003 Queen's Birthday Honours List for her services to Children's Literature as Children's Laureate.

She's written some 140 books , her first being 'The Summerhouse Loon' which she wrote while expecting Lone. her first daughter.
She was married to Kit Fine but split after 11 years because he wanted to remain in America, where they'd lived for 10 years but she wanted to return to England. They were divorced in 1991.
She won the ' Carnegie Medal for the Best Children's book of the Year for the second time in 1992 and the Whitbread Children's Novel Award in 1992 and 1996.
