In addition to his work in film, Preston M. "Sandy" Fleet was an
accomplished inventor and entrepreneur. He co-founded WD-40 and Fotomat
corporations and developed the OMNIMAX large screen format. He funded
and built the world's first OMNIMAX theater, the Reuben H. Fleet Space
Theatre in San Diego, after his father. He also served as president of
the National Theatre Organ Society. His philanthropic and community
activities resulted in his being awarded Man of the Year at his alma
mater, Culver Military Academy, and he served two terms on the board of
the San Diego Community Foundation. In 1989 he married his longtime
companion, Beth Fleet, to whom he remained married until his death
after a prolonged battle with cancer, in 1995.
