Daisy Ridley trades in her Star Wars lightsaber for a pair of goggles in new film Young Woman and the Sea, telling the real-life story of the first woman to successfully swim the English Channel.
Ridley plays Trudy Ederle, who made the 21-mile swim in 1926 and broke down barriers for women in the sport along the way, but whose story is not commonly known. At the Los Angeles premiere on Thursday, Ridley told The Hollywood Reporter that she wasn’t much of a swimmer before the project, acknowledging, “I would walk into a pool and I would stand there, and sometimes I would do a hold my breath competition, but I had never done a full length of the pool. So the first time I got in the pool and tried to, I stood up halfway and was like, ‘I actually can’t do this.’ And then I had to...

"C'mon girl, kick your feet!" Disney has revealed an official trailer for their summer movie Young Woman and the Sea, based on the true story of the first woman to ever swim across the English Channel. It's set to open at the end of May and we've been waiting to finally see a trailer. "21 miles and a nice day for a swim." Daisy Ridley stars as Trudy Ederle, an American woman who grew up in Manhattan and learned to swim in New Jersey. After winning a gold medal at the 1924 Summer Olympics in Paris, she eventually made the incredible English Channel swim from France to England in 1926 at the age of 20. This also co-stars Tilda Cobham-Hervey, Stephen Graham, Kim Bodnia, Christopher Eccleston, and Glenn Fleshler. It's directed by Norwegian filmmaker Joachim Rønning (of Kon-Tiki and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales), adapted from Glenn Stout's book,...

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for True Detective Season 4, Episode 2, “Part 2.”] True Detective: Night Country unveiled a few Season 1 connections in its latest episode as the funder behind the Tsalal Research Station was revealed to be Tuttle United, and Rose Aguineau’s (Fiona Shaw) late love was confirmed to be Travis Cohle (Erling Eliasson), father to Rust (Matthew McConaughey). For those who may have tuned into the anthology series’ first season in 2014, they might recall that the Tuttle name belonged to key characters from the series’ first outing. A rich and powerful family, the Tuttles ultimately helped shield an insidious cult, which involved the torture, rape, and murder of down-on-their-luck women and children. Season 1’s big bad, Errol Childress (Glenn Fleshler), was directly tied to the Tuttles as the son of Sam Tuttle’s illegitimate son, Billy Childress. Uncovered by the work of detectives Rust and Marty (Woody Harrelson), the name isn’t synonymous with good behavior, so when ...

At the end of Alan Moore and Brian Bolland’s 1988 one-shot Batman: The Killing Joke, the Joker lays out his worldview in plain terms. After testing his theory that “one bad day” could make even the most decent person into a madman like himself, the Joker tells his nemesis, “It’s all a joke! Everything anybody ever valued or struggled for… it’s all a monstrous, demented gag!”
Even more than the grisly sights of The Killing Joke—in which the Clown Prince of Crime sets out to prove his theory by brutalizing Batgirl Barbara Gordon and tormenting her father Commissioner Gordon—that line has set the course of Joker stories of the past several decades. Fans and creators alike try to push the Joker to edgier extremes, forgetting how Batman answers when his nemesis asks why he isn’t laughing. “Because I’ve heard it before,” he responds. “And...

This is Day 112 of the SAG-AFTRA strike.
Striking actors in New York City hit the picket lines in extra layering Thursday with the weather turning colder and their union’s strike against studios and streamers extending into its fifth calendar month.
Amid reports of progress in the talks out west between SAG-AFTRA and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, picketers spotted Thursday outside AMPTP member company offices in Manhattan included Annabella Sciorra, Terry Kinney, Kelly AuCoin, Glenn Fleshler, Stephen Kunken, Carrie Gibson, Michael Cyril Creighton, Frank C. Williams and Stephanie D’Abruzzo.
Actors said that they are doing their best to balance hopes for a settlement — which have been dashed before — with managed expectations while most continue to go without paying work.
“It’s a fine line,” Gibson, a SAG-AFTRA strike captain who had a recurring role on Max’s Barry, told Deadline at a picket outside NBCUniversal headquarters at Rockefeller Center.

This article contains spoilers for the "Barry" series finale.
Hollywood and the truth aren't on speaking terms; it's a business founded on make-believe, after all. That's why it's the perfect setting for "Barry." I've written before that the series questions whether people can truly change, and its answer is that most settle for just pretending to be somebody else. Reckoning with the truth can be hard, and the series' epilogue shows how yet another comforting lie won out over reality.
The last scene of the series is John Berkman (Jaeden Martell), the teenage son of Barry (Bill Hader) and Sally (Sarah Goldberg), watching "The Mask Collector" — a highly inaccurate, sensationalized version of his father's life and how it intertwined with the life of acting teacher Gene Cousineau (Henry Winkler). "Barry" has always had a satirical outlook on the entertainment industry, and "The Mask Collector" — an overt critique of the true-crime...

Catching the killer wasn't the point of "True Detective" season 1. In fact, even when the killer was caught, that was far from the end of the story. Fans of that first season may still be haunted by Marty Hart's (Woody Harrelson) acknowledgment in the final episode, "We ain't gonna get them all. That ain't the kind of world it is." "Them," in this context, refers to a group of influential Louisianians who had been committing horrific crimes against women and children for decades. And the fact that most of them remained at large was perhaps the most disturbing part of the whole season.
In the eighth and final episode of "True Detective" season 1, Marty and his detective partner Rust Cohle (Matthew McConaughey) find and kill Errol Childress (Glenn Fleshler). Childress was the son of William Lee Childress, who in turn was the illegitimate son of Sam Tuttle, patriarch of...

"True Detective" season 1 was one of the most enjoyably unsettling seasons of TV ever produced. Writer/Creator Nic Pizzolatto crafted a detective show like no other, mixing in elements of cosmic horror, Nietzschean philosophy, and one of the creepiest secret society plots ever conceived. But you know what the most disturbing thing about that first season was? The fact that Errol Childress (Glenn Fleshler), the serial killer who's eventually taken out by detectives Rust Cohle (Matthew McConaughey) and Marty Hart (Woody Harrelson), was just the tip of the iceberg.
Throughout the first season of "True Detective," Marty and Rust uncover an occult-worshiping, human-sacrificing abuse ring, whose members occupy high-level positions in society. And by the end of the season, it's clear Childress was a particularly sadistic part of a much more insidious whole.
Now, the trailer for the upcoming "True Detective: Night Country," suggests we might be about to delve...

The HBO show Barry walks a tightrope between satirizing the delusional nature of actors and straightforwardly examining the fatal consequences of the title character’s (Bill Hader) decisions. Each season of the show pushes the plot into more horrific territory, but the comedy is still on point thanks to characters like Noho Hank (Anthony Carrigan). A few seasons in and now Hank is everyone’s favorite Chechen gangster, but when Barry began filming, the plan was for him to die in the pilot episode.

The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that HBO announced the eight episode fourth season of Barry is the end.

Joker is a movie directed by Todd Phillips starring Joaquin Phoenix, Robert De Niro and Frances Conroy.
The most awaited movie of the year leads us to a bitter social denouncement in which no one is left standing, that merges satire and flight of fancy. A kick in the mouth for movies about super heroes and the industry.
Joker is the movie of the year, no matter what they say, and mentioning Joaquin Phoenix as an Oscar winner is no longer a pipe dream nor is this movie a clear-cut candidate for the award that, I am afraid, will not receive it.
Storyline Joker (2019)
Arthur Fleck is a comedian (a clown) with a disreputable life that leads him to madness…(maybe not so much). He is considerably pissed off with society and will make someone pay.
About the Movie
Very, very good. Crude, cruel, an uncomfortable fusion of extremes that we love.

It is safe to say now that, looking back on it, 2019’s ‘Joker’ was a film that made a number of enemies before any friends. From the film’s conception, there was always talk that a Joker film could bring about violence from unhinged viewers. A lot of this fear likely stemmed from the infamous 2012 Dark Knight Rises movie theater shooting in Aurora, Colorado. Despite the initial hate and pushback the film received before it even hit theaters, Todd Phillips breathed new life and story into a genre, the superhero genre, that was desperate for a change to the norm. 2019’s ‘Joker’ was both a box office and critically acclaimed success, Joaquin Phoenix being praised for his portrayal of the supervillain. Now, with the announcement that a sequel is on its way, what does Phillips’ team have in store for the highly anticipated sequel: ‘Joker: Folie à Deux...

"Barry" is one of the best shows on HBO right now. Although the series has competed at the Primetime Emmy Awards in the comedy categories, it's hard to call "Barry" a "comedy" anymore. The dark character study of a truly demented man may have a few outrageously funny moments, but it's also very bleak in its worldview. On the plus side, it's allowed Bill Hader to show his true dramatic range, with a performance that is both terrifying and sympathetic.
"Barry" is hardly the first dark comedy about an assassin, but unlike others, it's not a show that pulls its punches. The series pokes fun at Hollywood, the theater industry, and actors' volatile and sometimes dramatic nature, but the satire doesn't detract from the gravity of the material. If anything, it makes everything else hit even harder — and there's no better example than how each of the characters have grown and changed.

Glenn Fleshler is a joy to watch as a bad guy in Brody’s otherwise disappointing, don’t-mess-with-the-quiet-type drama
While Paul Solet is credited as the director, producer and co-screenwriter for this gloomy, Taxi Driver-style tale about a lonely man with lots of firearms, the film’s star Adrien Brody was the other screenwriter, another one of its producers, and even the composer of the deep register, synth-based score. So if that doesn’t make this a vanity project for Brody, then it’s at least a bit of a folie à deux, given the end result is so pretentious and derivative.
At least there are a few redeeming features in the supporting cast, including, in reverse order of redemptiveness, the always welcome RZA as a gun-shop owner, Chandler DuPont as an ingenue street kid called Dianda who inspires protectiveness in Brody’s protagonist, and Hollywood’s favourite balding bad guy,...

The NBC limited series The Thing About Pam, starring Renée Zellweger, concluded its run on Tuesday, April 13, but has clearly made its mark for the network as its top-rated new series of the 2021-2022 season.
The show centers on the 2011 murder of State Farm employee Betsy Faria, which resulted in her husband Russ’s conviction, although he insisted he didn’t kill her and was later exonerated. This brutal crime set off a chain of events that would expose a diabolical scheme deeply involving Pam Hupp (Zellweger).
The series premiered in March and its opening episode performed decently with a 0.4 rating in the 18-49 demo and 2.79 million viewers. Since then, the episode jumped up to a 4.24 in the demo and tallied 14 million viewers – a 5x audience increase – across live, delayed and digital viewing, according to the network. The company also said that the pilot marked NBC’s best digital launch ever.

Warning: Major spoilers ahead for “Barry” Seasons 1 and 2
We last saw Barry Berkman in the midst of a rage blackout, gunning down criminals in pursuit of the man who betrayed his most terrible secret.
If the details are a little hazy, that might be because it’s been three years since the Emmy-winning series “Barry” was on air. Co-created by Alec Berg and Bill Hader – who also wrote and directed several episodes – the dramedy chronicles the life of Barry (Hader), a depressed veteran and hitman who discovers a passion for acting when he takes a class to get eyes on his latest mark. But extricating himself from the criminal world is harder than he realized, and the deeper he gets invested in his new life, the more complicated burying his past becomes.
Season 2 took place in the aftermath of the murder of Detective Janice Moss (Paula Newsome), who also happened...

The last time HBO’s “Barry” aired on TV, the final season of “Game of Thrones” was unfolding, Donald Trump was president of the U.S. and nobody on Earth had ever heard of “Covid-19.” It was a much simpler time!
It’s been nearly three years since Emmy winner Bill Hader last played Barry Berkman, everyone’s favorite part-time assassin and aspiring actor. Barry has successfully avoided arrest following several murders, while also growing as a thespian and dating fellow actor Sally (Sarah Goldberg), but Season 3 puts him in his most precarious position yet. Barry’s former handler, Monroe Fuches (Stephen Root), has fully turned against him. In the Season 2 finale, it’s revealed that Fuches told Barry’s acting coach, Gene M. Cousineau (Henry Winkler), that Barry killed Cousineau’s girlfriend, police officer Janice Moss (Paula Newsome), in the Season 1 finale.
With Cousineau aware of the truth about Barry,...

Exclusive: Deadline has the first pair of exclusive tracks from Sonya Belousova and Giona Ostinelli’s score for The Thing About Pam, which is set for release via Milan Records on April 15, following the airing of the NBC true-crime ratings hit’s finale.
The Blumhouse Television-produced limited series centers on the 2011 murder of State Farm employee Betsy Faria (Katy Mixon), which resulted in her husband Russ’s (Glenn Fleshler) conviction, although he insisted he didn’t kill her and was later exonerated. This brutal crime set off a chain of events that would expose a diabolical scheme deeply involving Faria’s supposed friend, Pam Hupp (Renée Zellweger).
From Belousova and Ostinelli’s perspective, Pam is someone who “tromps through town like a predatory larger-than-life force that will crush anything that comes her way.”
The show’s main theme, “The Thing About Pam,” is billed as “a motif combined with a predatory march,...

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for The Thing About Pam series finale, “She’s A Killer.”] Whether or not you enjoyed NBC’s six-part dramatized take on Pam Hupp, Renée Zellweger’s performance in The Thing About Pam has to stand out. In fact, it wouldn’t be surprising if she ended up with an Emmy nomination as a result. The series offered a look at the murder of Betsy Faria (Katy Mixon in the series), for which Betty’s husband Russ (Glenn Fleshler) was convicted, despite his claims of innocence. He was later exonerated. The crime led to a chain of events that ultimately ended with Pam (Zellweger) in prison — and in showrunner Jenny Klein’s take, a meta conclusion that saw her watching the series. It’s a story that became popular after several episodes of Dateline NBC were dedicated to it, as well as a 2019 podcast. Real footage of Pam played over the closing credits,...

Check back to see if your favorite show got the nod — or to learn about a new one! Spoilers ahead. If you’re not yet sure how you feel about NBC’s new true-crime limited series The Thing About Pam, Episode 3 “She’s a Star Witness,” which aired on March 22, will get you hooked. Following the true story of how Pam Hupp (Renée Zellweger) allegedly murdered her friend Betsy Faria (Katy Mixon), and framed Betsy’s husband Russ (an effectively pitiable Glenn Fleshler) for it, this episode depicts Russ’s trial and the absolute insanity that went down at that courthouse. For a show about a murder, The Thing About Pam can be comical. The episode...

Sometimes truth really is stranger than fiction, and in the case of unsuspecting convicted murderer Pam Hupp, the “truth” is just a web of fictions to begin with.
The twisted tale of two best friends in Troy, Missouri — that ended in the ultimate backstabbing for insurance money — is at the heart of NBC’s new limited series “The Thing About Pam,” premiering March 8. Two-time Oscar winner Renée Zellweger made headlines for her head-turning transformation into Hupp thanks to layers of prosthetics, and the star-studded ensemble cast including Judy Greer, Josh Duhamel, Katy Mixon, and Glenn Fleshler round out the very “Fargo”-esque series.
And all that quirky fourth-wall breaking is an intentional nod towards the Coen Brothers, showrunner Jenny Klein explained to the audience during a special advance screening and Q&a with fellow executive producer Zellweger Monday night in NYC, moderated by Happy Sad Confused podcast host Josh Horowitz.

When it comes to Pam Hupp — the small-town Missouri resident currently serving a life sentence for first-degree murder — no one thing defines her. And no one knows that better than the people at NBC. Just a periphery character in the 2014 “Dateline” report titled, “The House on Sumac Drive,” Hupp’s presence steadily grew as NBC News continued to investigate the death of Betsy Faria, resulting in four follow-up episodes over the next five years. The final entry, also titled “The Thing About Pam,” teed up “Dateline’s” first podcast, which is now the basis for NBC’s scripted limited series of the same name.
One could argue audiences can’t get enough of Hupp’s twisted tale — or, just as easily, that Jack Donaghy’s lessons in synergy have not been forgotten at the Peacock. Either way, the quantity of stories derived from one woman’s horrific actions necessitate varied takes on her motivation,...

It’s hard, at first, to see what drew Renée Zellweger to the lead role of “The Thing About Pam.”
Zellweger, in an attempt to resemble the real-life convicted murderer Pam Hupp, forces herself to act through a shroud of body prosthetics. The show’s writers have stripped away subtext, dimming Zellweger’s sparky comic timing. It’s only in the series’ third episode that a tie to Zellweger’s past work becomes clear: Rising to take the stand as a witness in a murder trial, Pam sees her name in lights. In the criminal-justice system, she’s found her own kind of stardom.
“Chicago” this isn’t — that movie allowed Zellweger to be as shrewd and sharp as her character was callous and oblivious. But “Pam,” a limited series based on Hupp’s true story, has this much in common with Zellweger’s famous musical role: It attempts to...

Pam Hupp is a wife and mother of two, a neighbor, a “nice lady”…and a suspected murderer in mom jeans. Played by an unrecognizable Renée Zellweger in the six-part limited series The Thing About Pam, she’s already been the subject of five Dateline NBC episodes and a hit podcast. The homicide in a small Midwestern town that unfolds is about as twisty as they come. The location: Troy, Missouri, the “sort of place that didn’t make a fuss,” notes wry narrator Keith Morrison of Dateline fame. But on December 27, 2011, “there’d be a fuss tonight.” Pam’s friend Betsy Faria (Katy Mixon) is killed, stabbed 55 times, the blame pinned on Betsy’s husband, Russ (Glenn Fleshler). Something is off, though, and the trail leads back to Hupp. Eventually. Here’s more on what makes Pam tick. The Thing About… Becoming a Series “I binged [the podcast tt13984270 autoThe Thing About...

To play convicted real-life killer Pam Hupp in “The Thing About Pam,” NBC’s upcoming series based on the wildly popular “Dateline” podcast of the same name, Renée Zellweger underwent hours in the makeup chair.
The limited series about the 2011 murder of Betsy Faria, which debuts on NBC on March 8, also stars Glenn Fleshler as Betsy’s husband Russ Faria, Josh Duhamel as his defense attorney Joel Schwartz, and Judy Greer as Leah Askey, the prosecutor who tried Russ Faria twice for his wife’s murder. All three wore wigs to transform into their real-life counterparts.
The creative decision to put Zellweger in a fat suit has drawn sharp criticism online, as did Sarah Paulson’s recent prosthetics-heavy portrayal of Linda Tripp on “Impeachment: American Crime Story.” However, cast and crew sidestepped the issue during a “The Thing About Pam” TCA panel on Friday.

Shaun of the Dead famously launched with the tagline “Zom, Rom, Com”, as in “zombies”, “romance” and “comedy”. It is fair to say, that is a tough combination to get right, and Shaun of the Dead naturally nailed it.
Werewolves Within takes these themes, adding a dash of small-town Americana charm and running with them. There is a healthy chunk of “Slither” (criminally overlooked) and a little bit of The Thing style paranoia, as a scientist gets drunk as a natural reaction to what her “science stuff” has told her about the recent, grizzly deaths. Our film kicks off, with our instantly lovable Finn (Sam Richardson) heading to a small town, “Beaverfield”, shortly before a blizzard hits, to start his new job as the park ranger.

NBC today unveiled a promo and first-look photos for its crime drama series The Thing About Pam, starring two-time Academy Award winner Renée Zellweger, which is slated to premiere March 8 at 10 p.m. Et/Pt.
Faria’s murder was previously examined in several episodes of Dateline NBC, becoming one of the most popular topics ever explored on the hit NBC franchise. It also became the subject of the popular 2019 podcast, The Thing About Pam, which remains one of the most downloaded podcasts on Apple Podcasts.
