As you can probably tell just from the title, The Last Kumite was inspired by 80s action films, the iconic Bloodsport in particular. And it opens like it stepped out of a time warp from the 1980s with an old-school pop song playing over a montage of scenes shot on the streets of New York City before taking us to the dojo where Michael Rivers is teaching his daughter Bree (Kira Kortenbach).
After an inspirational speech at the end of her training, it’s time to go see Mom. If you guessed that means a trip to the cemetery, you’ve seen as many of these films as I have.

Theaters will need wider screens because two action icons built like trucks, Dolph Lundgren and Michael Jai White, are teaming up for Fight or Flight, an upcoming action thriller. Shane Dax Taylor directs the assassins-in-action film project, and Charlotte Kirk joins the lead cast. Fight or Flight is going to Cannes. Archstone represents international sales, while Saban holds the North American rights.
According to Deadline‘s exclusive report, Fight or Flight has the following synopsis:
“Sam Hayden as an assassin of assassins, completing every assignment – no matter how dangerous with ruthless precision. Sam’s next assignment is to take out his legendarily ruthless predecessor, Charles Managold (Dolph Lundgren), who has fallen for his beautiful exotic mark and is now on the run with her. Sam is cold, professional and there is nothing that could sway him from his missing, not even the love of his life, Nona Messenger (Alexis Knapp...

It can’t be denied that as far as martial arts movies go, the best ones come from Asia, particularly Hong Kong during their action heyday, which was arguably the 70s, 80s and first half of the ’90s. That said, martial arts movies were also making a foothold in the States at the time, thanks mainly to Bruce Lee-mania following the release of Enter the Dragon. Before that movie, very few actors in Hollywood seemed like they were credible martial artists, except maybe James Coburn, a student of Lee’s, who pulled off some pretty good-looking moves in the otherwise silly Our Man Flint movies. Steve McQueen also had training but didn’t use martial arts on screen.
Up to then, though, the most notable uses of martial arts in movies usually revolved around Judo, with James Cagney showing off some good moves in the film Blood on the Sun,...

When most people think of martial arts masters, names like Bruce Lee, Donnie Yen, Chuck Norris, Michael Jai White, Cynthia Rothrock, Jean-Claude Van Damme, and Michelle Yeoh come to mind. Still, Hollywood is ripe with what some would call unsung industry heroes, such as Scott Adkins, a powerhouse of talent on several fronts. In a detailed article featured in The Hollywood Reporter, Alex Ritman delves into Adkins’ origin, a quest for the spotlight, and reputation for being one of the hardest working badasses in Tinseltown.
In addition to being a charismatic actor, Adkins is a gifted student of many martial arts disciplines, including Taekwondo, Judo, Karate, Ninjitsu, Capoeira, Krav Maga, Wushu, Muay Thai, Kung Fu, Jeet Kune Do, Kickboxing and Brazilian and Jui Jitsu. His passion for elevating his body and spirit began near the age of 10 when the captivating Bruce Lee inspired Adkins to study Judo. After getting mugged...

During his press tour for John Wick 4, Keanu Reeves was asked about the two “martial arts legends” in Donnie Yen and Hiroyuki Sanada he got to work with in the film and made a point of adding Scott Adkins to this list. These three, he said, were “real martial artists” (as opposed to himself, a “movie martial artist”), and asserted that “Adkins’ technique, his passion, is on another level.”
While that was high praise indeed from cinema’s current bloodied action franchise king, for the legions of international fans Adkins has amassed in the two decades he’s been spin-kicking, backflipping and acrobatically whooping ass on screen, it was no more than he deserved. Across some 60-plus titles, the Brit has shown off both his prowess in more martial arts disciplines than most people have heard of — including Taekwondo, Judo, Karate, Ninjitsu, Capoeira, Krav Maga, Wushu, Muay Thai, Kung Fu,...

When casting the hottest action stars for John Wick: Chapter 4, Scott Adkins was a natural choice. Director Chad Stahelski has tried to get Adkins into all the John Wick movies, but due to scheduling conflicts it hasn’t worked out until now. Cast as Fat Killa in the new movie, Adkins is almost unrecognizable under the heavy makeup, gold grill, and fat suit. In real life, Adkins is devilishly handsome, so much so he often plays villains. He’s also built like Adonis but even more yoked. It’s a body he’s earned through a lifetime of martial arts practice.
In real life, the Adkins family are butchers by trade. Adkins was born and raised in England, and his first exposure to martial arts began at age 10 with Judo. When he was 13, he was the victim of a robbery, and that experience hardened his resolve. After that, he dedicated his life to training,...

The “John Wick” franchise has a reputation for razzle-dazzle filmmaking and serving as demo reels for some of the world’s finest – or at least most promising – action movie stars. “John Wick: Chapter 4” is no exception, with Donnie Yen taking center stage alongside franchise star Keanu Reeves, as Hiroyuki Sanada and Marko Zaror lend prestige and support. Bringing the opposite of “prestige,” at least in terms of the role he plays in the Chad Stahelski-directed actioner, is Scott Adkins.
Adkins has made a name for himself as one of the preeminent filmmakers in the world of direct-to-consumer (DVD/VOD/streaming/etc.) action movies. You know you’re in for a good treat every time you see the names of Isaac Florentine and Scott Adkins pop-up in a movie, especially if you adore action cinema that much. Just like his Undisputed and Ninja movies, Seized sees Florentine makes the best out of Adkins’ fighting prowess in a chain of testosterone-inducing scenes. This movie begins by swiftly setting up who’s who and what’s happening. Richard (Adkins) is a middle-aged man who works as a security consultant in Mexico, living with his only child Taylor (Matthew Garbacz). Florentine doesn’t waste his time to show us that this father-son relationship isn’t working well as Taylor constantly rebelling against everything his dad says each time they talk to each other. The kid also...

"There are no good people in there - no saints, only sinners." Lionsgate has released an official trailer for an action thriller titled Seized, the latest from B-movie action filmmaker Isaac Florentine (who also made Acts of Vengeance with Adkins). Mma action star Scott Adkins plays a former Special Forces agent whose son is kidnapped and must now wipe out three dangerous crime syndicates if he wants to see him alive again. Adkins has been starring in endless action movies recently, none of them worth watching, but he still keeps making them - he's also in Debt Collectors and Legacy of Lies this year. Seized also features Mario Van Peebles with a killer cowboy hat, Steven Elder, Karlee Perez, James P. Bennett, David Fernandez Jr., Luis Gatica, and Mauricio Mendoza. "I had been punishing the wrong person..." Saban Films has debuted an official trailer for an action thriller titled Acts of Vengeance (originally titled Stoic), about a lawyer who goes for revenge after his wife and daughter are killed. Yes, we've heard that exact emotional plot description 100 times before, so here's yet another vengeance movie for those who want it. Starring Antonio Banderas as Frank Valera, with a cast including Cristina Serafini as his wife, plus Karl Urban, David Sakurai, Paz Vega, Robert Forster, Lillian Blankenship, and Clint Dyer. This film is obviously all about the action, and the act of getting vengeance (hence the title) though I doubt it has much more to offer. Check it out below if you're interested. Here's the first trailer (+ poster) for Isaac Florentine's Acts of Vengeance, direct from YouTube: A fast-talking lawyer (Antonio Banderas) transforms his body and takes a vow of silence,...

Recently I wrote an article that focused on the director/actor partnership of Isaac Florentine and Scott Adkins, with me writing about how some of their work may be overlooked as it is released to the Dtv market. With this article I am going to look at another partnership that like Florentine and Adkins, fits squarely into the action genre. Perhaps not as overlooked as those released straight to DVD, the work of director Yuen Woo Ping and actor Donnie Yen still isn’t widely available, with a good deal of their back catalogue only available through imports. This is surprising considering the international success Donnie Yen has had in recent years. The director and action choreographer Yuen Woo Ping should be no stranger to Hong Kong...

Boyka is back, with Scott Adkins once again taking on his most popular role to lay one hell of a beatdown in the upcoming Boyka: Undisputed. This one breaks with the format of the series somewhat with the title character beginning his life and trying to make a name for himself outside of prison but, sure enough, we quickly find ourselves back in tournament fighting mode. Previous director Isaac Florentine slides into a producing role here with the directing reins handed to Todor Chapkanov, and Chapkanov has clearly paid close attention to Florentine's previous work. What do we get? We get Boyka himself in action for one image and with the other a hulking shadow that I can only assume is a first teasing look at the villain of the piece. In the fourth installment of the fighting franchise, Boyka is shooting for the big leagues when an accidental death in the ring makes him question everything he stands for.Check out the images below!...

Soon to move into the Marvel Universe in an as-yet-unspecified role in Doctor Strange, actor and martial artist Scott Adkins first has one more kick (and punch, and spinning flip thing) at the can with the role that first threw him into the spotlight amongst fight fans. You're god damn right, kids, the first teaser for the Isaac Florentine helmed Boyka: Undisputed (aka Undisputed 4) has arrived. And while it's very much just a tease it's got all the acrobatic yet brutal action you could possibly want at this stage.Adkins is one of the world's truly great - and still very much under appreciated - bad asses and this shows him doing what he does best, and better than virtually anyone else on the planet...

For my money, Scott Adkins is the greatest Western martial arts actor of modern times. He has an exhilarating acrobatic style, with an emphasis on kicks that seem to defy the laws of gravity. The pairing of Adkins with filmmaker Isaac Florentine has made for some hugely beloved B-action, most notably the Undisputed and Ninja franchises. Their most recent collaboration is Close Range, which was released on VOD in the Us last week before opening in select cinemas this week on December 11.The film follows Colton MacReady, a rogue solder-turned-outlaw, who is thrust into a relentless fight with a corrupt sheriff, his obedient deputies, and a dangerous drug cartel in order to protect his sister and her young daughter.Meanwhile, Adkins has recently finished work on Hard...

Meet some of the best directors working today, who haven't gone down the blockbuster movie route...
Ever find it a bit lame when the same big name directors get kicked around for every high profile project? Christopher Nolan, Jj Abrams, maybe the Russo Brothers? With so much focus on blockbuster films these days, getting a major franchise job seems like the main acknowledgement of success for a filmmaker. And yes, both the financial and creative rewards can be great. But there are plenty of other directors out there, doing their own thing, from art house auteurs to Dtv action specialists.
Here are 25 examples.
Lee Hardcastle
Even if you don’t know his name, you’ve probably seen Lee Hardcastle’s ultraviolent claymations shared on social media. He first started getting noticed for his two-minute remake of The Thing, starring the famous stop motion penguin Pingu. Far from just a cheap one-joke mash-up,...

My history with Joseph Kahn is an odd one. So when we spoke on Saturday about the top-secret project he's been working on since I saw him last summer at Comic-Con, I was aware how strange it is that Kahn would trust me with this secret. It is a testament to the way a real conversation with someone can change a relationship entirely, because by all rights, he shouldn't have anything at all to say to me. After all, I was rude to him about his first film "Torque." I didn't review the film, but I did find a way to make sure to take a cheap shot at him at the end of the year. In his second feature, "Detention," Kahn sneaks in a few sideways digs at film critics, but the damnedest thing happened: I enjoyed the film when I saw it at SXSW and I gave it a good review.
