An American-born matador, he was in Veracruz, Mexico, soon after his
19th birthday, watching a bullfight, when he decided that he would
become a bullfighter.
He was also a journalist during the Spanish Civil War and a bar manager in Spain after WWII. Ernest Hemingway wrote about him in "Death in the Afternoon".
