There are 86 categories at the Grammy Awards, too many to present during a single prime time telecast, so the awards are handed out in two parts. The main ceremony airs live on CBS at 8:00pm Eastern/5:00pm Pacific, and it’s there we’ll find out who claims the top prizes: Album of the Year, Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best New Artist, among others. But most of the story of this year’s awards is told in the afternoon at the Premiere Ceremony. Read on as I live blog the event and what its results might mean for the prime time kudos. Watch them streaming live online on Grammy.com or on the Recording Academy’s YouTube channel starting at 3:30pm Eastern/12:30pm Pacific.

LeVar Burton will host the Grammys’ “premiere ceremony,” the pre-telecast afternoon event during which the vast majority of winners will be announced April 3.
The Grammys-before-the-Grammys will get underway at the the MGM Grand Conference Marquee Ballroom in Las Vegas at 12:30 p.m. Pt/3:30 Et. The early unveiling of winners be available for streaming on the Recording Academy’s YouTube channel as well as at live.grammy.com.
With fewer than 20 categories typically being announced on the air during the prime-time CBS telecast, that means more than three-quarters of the night’s 86 winners will likely be announced during the afternoon event.
A number of performances will be sprinkled into the premiere ceremony, as is customary, with country star and best new artist nominee Jimmie Allen and thrice-nominated Americana artist Allison Russell among those set to lend a tune in the ballroom. Fellow nominees Ledisi, Mon Laferte and Curtis Stewart will perform as well.

Six time Grammy©-nominated jazz vocalist Nnenna Freelon is taking on the huge task of mounting her first play – a play about a most unlikely subject, the clothesline. Freelon’s journey, along with interviews from the last living generation of African American washerwomen, is the subject of filmmaker Lana Garland’s documentary film, Living Off the Line: Stories From The Clothesline Muse, which is currently crowdfunding on Indiegogo here. The project was originally conceived as a five-minute dance piece choreographed by Guggenheim and Fulbright dance scholar Dr. Kariamu Welsh. The audience response and feedback to that performance included an outpouring of stories and memories...
