Even on a day when much of America was hoping to see the sun go out, there’s still an ongoing need to hear someone sing “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me.” That, among many other things, is what’s offered in tonight’s PBS broadcast of a tribute special for Elton John and Bernie Taupin, two of the worthiest talents ever to be awarded the Library of Congress’ Gershwin Prize. If you’re a fan — and who isn’t?, as they say — the two-hour show will provide a total eclipse of all your other most pressing entertainment needs.
Three words: “Joni Mitchell” and “Metallica.” If this salute never moved out of the M’s, it would be worthy enough just based on those two highlights alone, neither of whom probably seemed like the likeliest Elton interpreter. But there they are, on the very same bingo card.

If Sir Elton John‘s career had only spanned the 1970s, he would still be a music legend, an icon of glam and progressive rock. Fortunately, he forged on, segueing into each new era of rock and branching into film and Broadway with comparable success and his signature aplomb and style. As John celebrates his 76th birthday, we’ve undertaken a nearly impossible task — narrowing a huge catalogue of memorable compositions down to the 25 best.
John was born Reginald Kenneth Dwight on March 25, 1947, and showed an affinity for playing the piano at a young age. In 1967, he answered an ad for songwriters and met Bernie Taupin, which led to a long and successful collaboration, with Taupin writing lyrics to which John composed music. It took a few years of struggling, but in 1970 they had their first top ten hit with “Your Song.” In 1972, “Honky Chateau” became his first of seven...

Prince Harry has agreed to a £400,000 (about $505,000) settlement with a British tabloid publisher found guilty last year of improper snooping into his personal life, the BBC reports.
The sum covers legal costs, as well as the initial £140,600 in damages Harry was awarded when the ruling against Mirror Group Newspapers was handed down last December. In the ruling, a judge found that Mirror Group’s papers — including The Mirror, The Sunday Mirror, and The Sunday People — had engaged in “unlawful information gathering” tactics, like hacking Harry’s phone or intercepting his voicemails.

Lokhandwala’s exit comes after the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and in July 2023 closed a $350 million sale to a group of its former lenders, Fortress Investment Group, Soros Fund Management and Monroe Capital. Last month, Vice Media announced another round of layoffs, after several Vice News shows failed to get renewed, and consolidated its five operating divisions down to two. The latest layoffs eliminated fewer than 100 jobs. Vice Media most recently had just over 1,000 staffers worldwide; at one point, it counted about 3,000 employees.
Lokhandwala has been at the company since 2018, formerly serving as chief strategy officer. Before joining Vice Media, he worked at Jp Morgan, most recently as managing director, head of content and entertainment investment banking.

On Friday, a British judge ruled that a lawsuit filed by Prince Harry and five other public figures against a newspaper publisher should go to a full trial.
Joined by Elton John, John’s husband David Furnish, Elizabeth Hurley and Sadie Frost, Prince Harry alleged that Associated Newspapers Ltd. unlawfully gathered information through bugs placed in their homes and cars, recorded phone conversations and obtained medical records through deceitful means.
Prince Harry alleged that the publisher deliberately targeted him and his inner circle when they hacked voicemails, tapped landlines and obtained detailed phone bills and flight information related to his then-girlfriend, Chelsy Davy.
Associated Newspapers vehemently denied these accusations and requested the judge to dismiss the case.
At the hearings in March, the Associated Newspapers’ lawyers argued that the claims – some of which dated back to 1993 – were filed too late and that the claimants were reliant on confidential evidence that...

Prince Harry looks set for a courtroom battle with The Daily Mail newspaper’s publisher in the UK.
The British royal’s damages claim over allegations of unlawful information gathering can go ahead to trial, a High Court judge ruled Friday.
As the BBC reports, Prince Harry is among a group of high-profile individuals, including Sir Elton John, David Furnish, Sadie Frost, Liz Hurley, and Sir Simon Hughes, who have brought legal action against Associated Newspapers Limited (Anl). The group has accused the publisher of multiple “gross breaches of privacy” such as hiring private investigators to place listening devices inside cars, listening into phone calls, and dishonestly obtaining medical and financial information.
Associated Newspapers has denied all the allegations. At hearings in March, its lawyers argued that the claims — which date as far back as 1993 — were brought “far too late,” The Guardian reported. The newspaper added that David Sherborne, representing Prince Harry and others,...

Prince William and Prince Harry’s private rifts became public knowledge when the Duke of Sussex admitted to them during the documentary Harry & Meghan: An African Journey and an interview with Oprah Winfrey. Harry then gave an account in his memoir Spare of a blowout with William over Meghan that he alleged turned physical.
A royal biographer has claimed that there was another major dustup between the princes over something the duchess did that resulted in Harry and his wife pulling out of a summer trip with the royal family.

The verdict in Kevin Spacey’s London sexual assault trial is here. The actor has been found not guilty and cleared of all nine charges against him.
The verdict was rendered after over 48 hours of deliberation. BBC News reports that the actor appeared emotional upon being acquitted.
Spacey faced sexual and indecent assault charges from four men over incidents alleged to have occurred between 2004 and 2013 when the actor was the director of London’s famed Old Vic Theatre.
When the Crown Prosecution Service brought charges against Spacey in 2022 it raised the specter of whether the actor would be willing to travel to London to face them. If he had been unwilling, an extradition would have had to be arranged. Instead, Spacey voluntarily journeyed to London to be formally charged and has appeared every day at the Southwark Crown Court on London’s South Bank as the trial unfolded.

Kevin Spacey was found not guilty of criminal sexual assault by a London jury Wednesday, clearing him of charges that could have landed the “House of Cards” actor in a British prison for the rest of his life, according to multiple media reports.
Spacey – on his 64th birthday – broke down in tears as the not guilty verdicts were read, The Daily Mail reported. The London trial’s conclusion means Spacey is no longer fighting any further sex assault allegations, criminal or civil.
The jury of British subjects began deliberating Monday in the five-week trial of the “Usual Suspects” actor, who had been facing eight criminal counts of sexual and indecent assault from 2001 to 2013 brought by four men who said he made aggressive and unwanted advances.
Spacey pleaded not guilty and became emotional on the stand earlier this month, acknowledging that he is a “big flirt” who made a “clumsy pass” at one accuser.

Kevin Spacey has been cleared of all nine sex charges in his U.K. criminal trial.
After more than 12 hours of deliberation following almost four weeks of evidence and testimonies, the jury at London’s Southwark Crown Court reached the not guilty verdict Wednesday afternoon. The judge, Justice Mark Wall, concluded that the “defendant may be discharged,” ending one of the most high-profile trials to emerge from the #MeToo era.
Spacey, for whom July 26 also marked his 64th birthday, reportedly wept on hearing the news.
In a short statement to the press outside the court roughly an hour later, an emotional-looking Spacey thanked the jury, his legal team and the court staff.
“I imagine many of you can understand that there’s a lot for me to process after what has just happened today,” he said. “I am humbled by the outcome.”

Kevin Spacey was “tried by social media” and “canceled” after he was accused of sexual assaults, Southwark Crown Court heard today as the Oscar-winner’s defense rested its case.
The 63-year-old, standing trial under his full name Kevin Spacey Fowler, is charged with nine sexual offences concerning four men which were were allegedly committed between 2001 and 2013.
The two-time Academy Award winner leaned forward in his chair in the dock and watched intently through the glass as his defence barrister Patrick Gibbs Kc gave a closing speech in London.
“What the defense suggests is that three people have lied and they have lied in ways and for reasons which, ultimately, will only ever be known to themselves,” said Gibbs, who suggested the fourth complainant was intoxicated.
He discussed topics including “fame, shame, money and memory” and told jurors: “It’s not a crime to like sex, even if you’re famous,...

Closing arguments in Kevin Spacey’s London sexual assault trial began Wednesday, with prosecutors spotlighting the similar accusations of crotch-grabbing brought forth against the actor by four victims.
Prosecutor Christine Agnew called Spacey’s actions an “opportunity grab” and that the actor — “a man who is used to getting his own way, used to being able to talk his way out of a situation” — believed he could grope consequence-free because he had a “trinity of protection”: Either the men wouldn’t report the incidents, or the men would go...

Elton John and his husband, David Furnish, both testified via video while they were in Monaco to corroborate Kevin Spacey’s testimony about John’s White Tie and Tiara Ball at the actor’s sexual assault trial in London.
John was questioned about his own recollections of Spacey at the party, as Spacey has been accused of grabbing a man’s crotch while the victim was driving, almost causing him to run off the road. This incident allegedly occurred while the men were on the way to John’s party in either 2004 or 2005, according to the man.
This party is hosted annually by John and Furnish at their home in England to raise money for AIDS.
John and Furnish proved that Spacey only attended the party in 2001 and not in 2005 by citing photos that show Spacey at the event in 2001. All guests are photographed each year, but no pictures exist...

“History is littered with those who are benevolent to some and cruel to others,” the prosecutor in the Kevin Spacey trial concluded with today.
Meanwhile, the four indecent assault charges on the indictment, which were alternative counts, were struck off by the judge, which was due to a “legal technicality” and not as a result of the prosecution abandoning any allegation.
Oscar-winning actor Spacey’s accusers are “no longer prepared to be the secret keeper for someone who treated them so badly,” Southwark Crown Court heard.
In the closing speech, prosecutor Christine Agnew Kc told jurors the case involves an “enormous power imbalance” and a man who is “used to getting his own way” taking advantage of that.
She questioned the two-time Academy Award winner’s claim that his accusers were “motivated by money” and suggested the trial was a result of his “aggressive, oppressive and intimidatory behaviour.”

Kevin Spacey was “like another son” to late Glengarry Glen Ross co-star Jack Lemmon, a court heard today at the American Beauty actor’s UK sex offenses trial.
During a series of 10 character references for the defense, Spacey became emotional as he reacted to the words from the likes of Chris Lemmon and House and Dead Poet’s Society star Robert Sean Leonard.
Lemmon, a stage actor who last year played his father in Blonde, said his dad saw Spacey as family and “so became like a brother to me.”
Spacey and Jack Lemmon appeared together in Glengarry Glen Ross, David Mamet’s 1992 adaptation of his play of the same name about a group of failing real estate agents who are told only the top two sellers will keep their jobs.
Leonard said Spacey is “positive, supportive and respectful” and added he had never seen anyone lead a company better than the American Beauty actor,...
