“My actors have the opportunity to really hit the ground running and then take a break and let it marinate,” casting director Julia Flores says of the collaboration between Valley Performing Arts Center (Vpac) and La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts. The third full-scale joint musical production is “Man of La Mancha” directed by Glenn Casale. Flores says Casale adds layers to whatever production he directs. “Glenn’s vision for the show is so timely and so heartbreaking,” Flores says. “It’s just a sign of the times where we are where you look around the world and you see what’s not going right and yet Quixote has the heart and the spirit to search for more and to believe in more…He puts that all out there.” And so does the show’s star, Davis Gaines. When Flores started casting, Gaines was the first person that came to mind.

Generally, I am not a fan of musicals, on film or stage. Those that I do enjoy rely on farce and/or transgressive themes to keep me entertained. With the recent surge in “horror movies turned musicals,” (i.e. Evil Dead and Re-Animator) the fear is that they will lose their transgressive-ness and novelty. There is no worry of that with Silence! The Musical.
Silence! The Musical is the song-and-dance version of Silence of the Lambs. Following the 1991 film very closely, the play sees FBI trainee Clarice Starling brought in to work with cannibalistic sociopath, Dr. Hannibal Lecter in tracking down psychopath-at-large Buffalo Bill. Sounds like the perfect setting for hilarity, doesn’t it? Well it is. Christine Lakin’s Clarice is dead-on, mastering Jodie Foster’s slurred drawl and wide-eyed faux-naiveté. It would have been funny had it not been so true. Davis Gaines’s Hannibal Lecter has a...

It may be hard to imagine the intensely tortured title character from “Phantom of the Opera” cracking jokes, but to actor Davis Gaines, the transition is no big deal. Gaines, who has played the Phantom more than 2,000 times on Broadway, and in Los Angeles and San Francisco, is taking on the role of King Arthur in “Monty Python’s Spamalot” at Musical Theatre West, which starts performances June 29.“I’ve actually done a lot of comedy, and I love it,” Gaines says. “Comedy for me is so much fun. As an actor, you get the audience reaction. In a serious piece, you may not get to gauge how the audience is feeling as much.” The Broadway hit, based on the movie “Monty Python and the Holy Grail,” retells the medieval legend of King Arthur’s quest for the fabled chalice, with as much song and absurdity as possible. Coincidentally, Gaines,...
