The past week saw two rather interesting pieces of news. The first was the financial report of publishing giant Square Enix for the fiscal year ending March 31 2014. Happily, they posted profits to the tune of $65 million; a huge step up from last year’s disastrous $134 million net loss. Crediting the turnaround to their gaming division, Square Enix cited Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster, Thief and Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition as all enjoying “favourable sales”.
It wasn’t always sunshine and roses for Crystal Dynamics’ reboot of the Lara Croft franchise, however. Despite launching to impressive sales figures – a million copies in just forty-eight hours and 3.4 million within four weeks – a financial briefing in early April 2013 revealed that Square Enix had been expecting nearly double those numbers, believing that a ‘conservative’ 5-6 million copies could have been sold in the same timeframe.

As TV thrillers go, this was one of the more tense Criminal Minds episodes. As usual, I found myself conflicted between the great writing and the horrific subject matter, especially as the latter involved children.
Tonight's UnSubs in "The Wheels on the Bus" were a pair of brothers who, after being kicked off of a gaming site, decided to create their own version of the online video game entitled "Gods of Conflict" by playing it out in real life, using high school students as their game pieces, and real guns as their weaponry.
The gameplay around the first confrontation seemed uneven: one player merely had to open a box with a key, take out a gun and shoot the other player, whereas the other had to assemble a gun before he could even get in the game. I couldn't buy the fact that the girl remained functional after killing her classmate,...

Chicago – Disney has cleverly timed this week’s release of Studio Ghibli’s “The Secret World of Arrietty” with the Blu-ray debut two other Ghibli films from one of the most influential studios in the history of film — “Whisper of the Heart” and “Castle in the Sky.” All three films are worth a look (as is Everything ever made by Studio Ghibli) but “Castle” is my personal favorite of the three. Just check ‘em all out (and stay tuned for more exciting news about an upcoming Chicago Film Critics Association event featuring HollywoodChicago.com about Studio Ghibli).
While the Ghibli films never make much of a dent at the U.S. box office, they are absolute juggernauts overseas. “The Secret World of Arrietty” has made $145 million worldwide. Like most Ghibli films, it’s beloved everywhere but the U.S.(where it couldn’t break $20 million). However, the people in the...

The Grudge director Takashi Shimizu’s latest project is titled Scared of the Dark and is being developed by Ghost House Pictures. We’ve received some new casting and character information, and wanted to share it with our readers.
It was previously announced that Morgane Slemp and David Gallagher were cast in the film. The movie will center around Olivia (Slemp) and her boyfriend Adam (Gallagher), and the story is said to be similar in nature to The Grudge. Other actors that have joined the cast include Dawn of the Dead‘s Jake Weber playing the part of Olivia’s father, Chloé Auger playing a younger Olivia, and Yuya Ozeki (The Grudge series).
Although not yet cast in the film, we hear that producers have been looking at Marielle Jaffe for the role of Olivia’s sister and it is looking likely that Alison Lohman will join the cast as Adam’s sister.

Grudge / Ju-On director Takashi Shimizu has recently teamed up once again with Sam Raimi's Ghost House pictures for a new spine-tingler on Us soil. Detailes of Scared Of The Dark's story still aren't forthcoming (we'd surmise that the dark, and being scared of it, is on the agenda somewhere), but the cast is coming together.Super 8's David Gallagher was announced last month to take the lead, with support from Morgane Slemp (Friday Night Lights) and Jake Webber (Dawn Of The Dead). This morning the news is coming though that they've been joined by Teruyuki Kagawa (Tormented), and by Yuya Ozeki, who played creepy little Toshio in the Grudge movies.Drag Me To Hell's Alison Lohman, and Scream 4's Marielle Jaffe are also in talks, but seem not to have signed anythinhg yet.Evil Dead veteran Robert Tapert is among the producers, and intriguingly the...

Our first post-Catherine episode of CSI, "Tressed to Kill," may have also been the most eerie offering so far this season. I can safely say that I didn’t see the murderer being a mama’s boy, with a hair fetish, fulfilling a desire to make women over in her image and then kill them.
This episode officially creeped me out, and I don’t think I will ever be able to listen to Charlie Rich’s “The Most Beautiful Girl” again without the images of the first victim popping into my head.
I also have to give full props to Charlie Brewster.... I mean William Ragsdale. Although he played a schmuck recently on Justified, I didn’t see him being the culprit; my money was on the son Adam Kemp (David Gallagher) from the moment he and his vapid mother came on screen.
I knew going into this episode...

Whisper Of The Heart
Stars: Ashley Tisdale, David Gallagher, James Sikking, Youko Honna, Kazuo Takahashi, Takashi Tachibana | Written by Hayao Miyazaki | Directed by Yoshifumi Kondô
Yet another release from the prolific and highly-regarded Studio Ghibli, Whisper of the Heart, originally released in 1995, is written by animation master Hayao Miyazaki and directed by his protégé Yoshifumi Kondo. It tells the tale of a young girl named Suzuku who finds that all the books she chooses in the library have been previously checked out by the same boy. She later meets Seji, an infuriating, yet disarmingly charming, young boy who may or may not be her “friend” from the library, and whose grandfather owns an antique shop. When Seji gets the chance to build violins in Italy it inspires Suzuku to follow her dreams of becoming a writer, and she pens a story about the “Baron”, the cat statue in Seji’s grandfathers shop,...

Tennessee: Klaus (Joseph Morgan) under the pretext of his car breaking down asks a girl if he can use her phone, so she can invite him in. She says she'll get the phone but he compels her. He's looking for Ray (David Gallagher). Stefan (Paul Wesley) waits outside and he's invited in too, so he can play lackey to Klaus once again as he lets rips into them. Caroline (Candice Accola) is planning a party for Elena's (Nina Dobrev) 18th. There's been a third animal attack in Memphis, more of Klaus's Vics. Alaric (Matt Davis) sleeps on the couch since he doesn't want to sleep in Jenna's room. Damon (Ian Somerhalder) in the bathtub asks Andie (Dawn Olivieri) for more champagne and has to get it himself. So he leaves the tub naked and who should walk in, Elena of course. So after getting a good eyeful of him, she throws him a towel,...

News reporter speaks of Andie's death, as Elena (Nina Dobrev) comes to visit Damon (Ian somerhalder). Her birthday is mentioned and she tells him Stefan (Paul Wesley) called her, she thinks it was him since he didn't say anything. No, she heard the pangs of heavy breathing instead, ha. He called from Tennessee. Damon tries to convince her, "Stefan's gone...not geographically." Gone in the head, too far gone, the usual explanations that accompany the phrase. Elena then turns to Alaric (Matt Davis) to ask about Tennessee and Stefan. Damon doesn't want to help. Well she's blinkered not seeing why Damon doesn't want to help, not at first anyway. Elena still has the notion Stefan can be saved, is worth saving and Alaric asks why she has to be the one to save him? A bit like all the other vampire shows gone before, not mentioning names, but of course she still loves him,...

"Vampire Diaries" fans! There you are. I'm sorry that this recap is so late; it won't happen again. Or maybe it will. I have no idea.
I'll admit right off the bat -- this wasn't my all-time favorite episode, but thanks to a few awesome moments at the end, and one big twist, I was definitely left satisfied. Cue up those DVRs, if they haven't eaten the episode in the days I've been amiss.
Previously on "The Vampire Diaries": Elijah was here, and things were better. Simon Camden grew a beard. Matt and Jeremy had a bro-off. Caroline and Tyler got naked together. Stefan cried beautiful tears.
8:01 - Nina Dobrev is as good as ever in this episode, but man, is Elena annoying. She still believes in Stefan because she got a creepy mouth-breather phone call? Let's all remember that while we saw Stefan's man-tear covered angstface, she didn't.

Last week, on the season premiere of “The Vampire Diaries”: Stefan slaughtered. Klaus smirked. Jeremy saw dead people. Damon smoldered. Elena sulked. And Caroline got shot with a half-dozen tranquilizers. What shenanigans will these crazy kids get up to tonight?
How about a camping trip? After Sheriff Forbes confirms to Elena that the mysterious call she received on her birthday came from someone in Tennessee, our fair heroine becomes determined to take a trip there and track down Stefan.

This may only be episode 2 of the new season of The Vampire Diaries but we're off to a quick and gruesome start. In true Vampire Diaries fashion we got right to the heart (pun intended) of the story and the hybrid campaign of the title was dealt with in swift fashion.
Poor Ray Sutton (David Gallagher); as soon as he stepped into that bar last week his writing was on the wall, but who could have predicted a death that was that torturous (I expected some level of pain but that was truly horrifying)? This was an episode that was high on the gore level all in the name of a hybrid army- from bleeding eyes to the standard Salvatore heart rip move. So Klaus' plan to make an army of hybrids failed despite his belief that he completed the sacrifice ritual correctly; Elena's (Nina Dobrev) life really will be...

The Vampire Diaries drove home another “bloody” winner on tonight’s episode of “The Hybrid”. Executive Producer Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec have broken up the story into three segments, one of which may take the show in an entirely new direction. The first major arc follows Klaus (Joseph Morgan) and Stefan’s (Paul Wesley) journey to create a new master race of hybrids. In “The Birthday”, Klaus fed werewolf Ray Sutton (David Gallagher) his blood and killed him so that the wolf would become a hybrid. He then took Sutton back to his pack in Smoky Mountains, Tennessee. After feeding Sutton human blood to complete the transition into hybrid, Klaus proceeded to turn the rest of the pack. Unfortunately, Klaus’ plan didn’t work. Why? He’s supposed to be a “true” hybrid, but the Doppleganger lives. Klaus just doesn’t know that. Yet. Apparently, the ritual has given...
